- 3. The control of claim 2 wherein the control means are operative to modulate the system capacity according to one of the first and second predefined functions rather than maintaining the conditioned fluid at the setpoint, if the deviation of the operating parameter from the limit is less than a first predetermined value.

- 9. The control of claim 8 wherein the control means modulate system capacity by adjustment of the inlet guide vanes at predefined intervals of time.
- 10. In a temperature conditioning system for conditioning a fluid to a setpoint temperature, a control for modulating the capacity of the system to maintain the temperature of the fluid at the setpoint unless an operating parameter is near a limit which would cause a protective shutdown of the system to avoid catastrophic failure and possible damage, said control comprising
- a. means for sensing the condition of the operating parameter;
- b. means for selecting the limit for the operating parameter; and
- c. control means responsive to the sensing means, for determining the deviation of the operating parameter from its limit, and if the deviation is within a predefined increment, modulating the capacity of the system as a function of the deviation rather than to maintain the fluid at its setpoint temperature.
- 11. In a temperature conditioning system for conditioning a fluid to a setpoint temperature, a method of controlling the capacity of the system when an operating parameter of the system is near a limit associated with a system protective shutdown to avoid catastrophic failure, said method comprising the steps of
- a. sensing the condition of the operating parameter;
- b. selecting the limit for the operating parameter;
- c. determining the deviation of the operating parameter from its limit, and
- d. modulating the capacity of the system according to a first predefined function of the deviation if the deviation is greater than a predefined deadband and according to a second predefined function of the deviation if the deviation is less than the deadband.
