Claims
- 1. A control device comprising:
- a housing;
- snap action means in said housing for discrete snap action movement between a stable configuration and an unstable configuration thereof;
- means in said housing for seating said snap action means and with said snap action means having an at-rest position displaced from said seating means;
- means engaged with said snap action means for urging said snap action means into its at-rest position; and
- force transmitting means engaged with said snap action means and operable generally for initially moving said snap action means from its at-rest position against said urging means into seating engagement with said seating means and for thereafter effecting the discrete snap action movement of said snap action means from the stable configuration toward the unstable configuration thereof.
- 2. The device as set forth in claim 1 further comprising caged resilient means engaged between said housing and said force transmitting means for opposing the operation of said force transmitting means.
- 3. The device as set forth in claim 1 wherein said force transmitting means includes a generally annular region engaged said snap action means.
- 4. The device as set forth in claim 1 wherein said urging means at least includes adjusting means engaging said snap action means for at least assisting in preselecting a force level at which the discrete snap action movement of said snap action means is effected from the stable configuration toward the unstable configuration thereof.
- 5. The device as set forth in claim 4 wherein said urging means at least includes at least one switching means movable in said housing for switching between a plurality of switching modes, said at least one switching means being movable from one of the switching modes toward another of the switching modes in response to the discrete snap action movement of said snap action means from the stable configuration toward the unstable configuration thereof, respectively.
- 6. The device as set forth in claim 5 wherein said urging means further includes means operable generally in response to a force exerted thereon in one direction by said snap action means upon the discrete snap action movement from the stable configuration toward the unstable configuration thereof for angularly changing the direction of the force and for applying the force in the angularly changed direction thereof onto said at least one switching means to effect its movement from the one switching mode toward the another switching mode thereof.
- 7. The device as set forth in claim 6 wherein said angularly changing and applying means includes actuator means arranged to engage said snap action means and received in guided relation in said housing for movement in the one direction of the force exerted by said snap action means upon its discrete snap action movement from the stable configuration toward the unstable configuration thereof, and means arranged in rotatable relation with said housing for rotation therein, said rotation means including a pair of flange means for engagement with said actuator means and at least said at least one switching means, respectively, said rotation means being rotatable in said housing in response to the force applied in the one direction onto one of said flange means by said actuator means to rotatably displace the other of said flange means effecting the operation of said at least one switching means from the one switching mode toward the another switching mode thereof.
- 8. The device as set forth in claim 1 wherein said urging means at least includes at least one switching means arranged in interconnected relation with said snap action means and operable generally for switching with creeping movement between a plurality of switching modes, said at least one switching means being operable with creeping movement from one of the switching modes toward another of the switching modes thereof in response to the initial movement by said force transmitting means of said snap action means from its at-rest position into seating engagement with said seating means.
- 9. The device as set forth in claim 1 wherein said urging means at least includes adjusting means for exerting an adjusting force onto said snap action means to at least in part define the magnitude of the force level transmitted by said force transmitting means onto said snap action means effecting its snap action movement from the stable configuration to the unstable configuration.
- 10. A control device comprising:
- a housing;
- snap action means in said housing and operable generally for discrete snap action movement between a stable configuration and an unstable configuration thereof;
- means in said housing for seating said snap action means and with said snap action means having an at-rest position displaced from said seating means;
- means engaged with said snap action means and operable generally for urging said snap action means into its at-rest position; and
- force transmitting means engaged with said snap action means and movable in said housing in response to a force exerted thereon in excess of a preselected force level for conjointly moving said snap action means from its at-rest position against said urging means into engagement with said seating means and for transmitting the force onto said snap action means when said snap action means is engaged with said seating means to effect the discrete snap action movement of said snap action means from the stable configuration to the unstable configuration thereof when the force attains another preselected force level predeterminately in excess of the first named preselected force level.
- 11. The device as set forth in claim 10 further comprising at least one switching means arranged in interconnected relation with said snap action means and operable generally for switching with snap action movement between a plurality of switching modes, said at least one switching means being operable with snap action movement from one of the switching modes toward another of the switching modes in response to the discrete snap action movement of said snap action means from the stable configuration toward the unstable configuration thereof.
- 12. The device as set forth in claim 10 wherein said urging means at least includes at least one switching means operable generally for switching with creeping movement between a plurality of switching modes, said at least one switching means being operable with creeping movement from one of the switching modes toward another of the switching modes thereof in response to the conjoint movement of said snap action means with said force transmitting means to move said snap action means from its at-rest position into engagement with said seating means when the level of the force exerted on said force transmitting means is between the another preselected force level and a third preselected force level intermediate the first named and another preselected force levels.
- 13. The device as set forth in claim 10 wherein said urging means at least includes overtravel spring means operable generally for resilient movement between a plurality of biased positions, and switching means arranged in interconnecting relation with said overtravel spring means and operable generally for switching with creeping movement between a plurality of switching modes, said switching means being operable with creeping movement from one of the switching modes toward another of the switching modes thereof at least generally conjointly with said overtravel spring means through at least a part of the operation of said overtravel spring means from one of the biased positions toward another of the biased positions thereof in response to the conjoint movement of said snap action means with said force transmitting means to move said snap action means from its at-rest position into engagement with said seating means when the force level of the force exerted on said force transmitting means is between the another preselected force level and a third preselected force level intermediate the first named and another preselected force levels.
- 14. The device as set forth in claim 10 wherein said urging means at least includes at least one switching means operable generally for switching between a plurality of switching modes, and means arranged so as to be engaged between said snap action means and said at least one switching means and operable generally for translating the movement of said snap action means to at least said at least one switching means, said translating means being conjointly movable with said snap action means from its at-rest position into seating engagement with said seating means to effect the operation of said at least one switching means with creeping movement from one of the switching modes toward another of the switching modes thereof when the force level of the force exerted on said force transmitting means is between the another preselected force level and a third preselected force level at which said snap action means engages said seating means with the third preselected force level being intermediate the first named and another preselected force levels, and at least another switching means operable generally for switching between a plurality of switching modes, said translating means being further conjointly movable with said snap action means to engage said at least another switching means and effect its operation from one of the switching modes toward another of the switching modes thereof in response to the discrete snap action movement of said snap action means from the stable configuration toward the constable configuration thereof.
- 15. The device as set forth in claim 10 further comprising resilient means caged in engagement between said housing and said force transmitting means for obviating the movement of said force transmitting means when the force is less than the first named preselected force level.
- 16. The device as set forth in claim 10 wherein said urging means includes adjusting means for at least in part defining the magnitude of the another preselected force level.
- 17. An electric circuit controlling device comprising:
- a housing;
- at least one resilient switch element in said housing and movable between a plurality of circuit controlling positions;
- snap action means in said housing and operable generally with discrete snap action movement from a stable configuration toward an unstable configuration thereof for exerting a force in one direction in said housing; and
- means arranged in interconnecting relation between said snap action means and said at least one resilient switch element and operable generally in response to the force exerted in the one direction by said snap action means for changing the direction of the force and for applying the force in its changed direction onto said at least one resilient switch element to effect the movement of said at least one resilient switch element from one of the circuit controlling positions toward another of the circuit controlling positions thereof.
- 18. The device as set forth in claim 17 wherein said changing and applying means includes actuator means engaged with said snap action means and received in guided relation with said housing for movement in said housing in the one direction of the force exerted on said actuator means by said snap action means upon its discrete snap action movement from the stable configuration toward the unstable configuration.
- 19. The device as set forth in claim 18 wherein said changing and applying means further includes means received in rotatable relation with said housing for rotation therein, a pair of flange means on said rotation means for engagement with said actuator means and said at least one resilient switch element, respectively, said rotation means being rotatable in response to the force applied in the one direction onto one of said flange means by said actuator means to rotatably displace the other of said flange means and thereby effect the change in the direction of the force exerted by said other flange means on said at least one resilient switch element to effect its movement from the one circuit controlling position toward the another circuit controlling position.
- 20. The device as set forth in claim 17 wherein said housing includes first and second pairs of generally opposed grooves, said changing and applying means comprising a plunger arranged in abutment with said snap action means and movable in said first opposed grooves in the one direction of the force exerted on said plunger by said snap action means, and a rotatable member including a pair of generally opposite trunnions rotatably received in said second opposed grooves, and a pair of flange means for engagement with said plunger and said at least one resilient switch element, respectively, the engagement between said plunger and one of said flange means effecting the rotation of said rotatable member on its opposite trunnions upon the movement of said plunger in the one direction to conjointly rotate said flange means and thereby effect the change in the direction of the force applied by the other of said flange means on said at least one resilient switch element to effect its movement from the one circuit controlling position toward the another circuit controlling position thereof.
- 21. An electric circuit controlling device comprising:
- a housing having a seat therein;
- force transmitting means for movement in said housing in response to a force exerted thereon;
- caged resilient means in said housing and engaged with said force transmitting means for opposing movement of said force transmitting means and for obviating the movement of said force transmitting means when the force exerted thereon is less than a first level;
- snap action means engaged with said force transmitting means so as to be spaced from said housing seat and operable generally for discrete snap action movement between a stable configuration and an unstable configuration thereof, said force transmitting means being responsive to the force exerted thereon in excess of the first level to move said snap action means into engagement with said housing seat when the force attains a second level greater than the first level and said snap action means being thereafter operated with the discrete snap action movement from the stable configuration toward the unstable configuration thereof when the force exerted on said force transmitting means attains a third level greater than the second level;
- a set of means movable in said housing for switching between a plurality of circuit controlling positions, respectively; and
- means associated in interconnecting relation with said snap action means and said switching means and operable generally for translating the movement of said snap action means into engagement with said housing seat onto at least one of said switching means to effect the operation of said at least one switching means from one of the circuit controlling positions toward another of the circuit controlling positions thereof and for translating the discrete snap action movement of said snap action means onto at least another of said switching means to effect the operation of said at least another switching means from one of the circuit controlling positions toward another of the circuit controlling positions thereof.
- 22. The device as set forth in claim 21 wherein said translating means includes actuator means reciprocally movable in said housing and engaged with said snap action means for conjoint movement therewith, and rotatable means engaged with said actuator means and rotatable in said housing for effecting the operating of said switching means, said actuator means being conjointly movable with said snap action means into engagement with its housing seat to rotate said rotatable means and effect the operation of said at least one switching means from the one circuit controlling position toward the another circuit controlling position thereof and said actuator being thereafter further conjointly movable with said snap action means from the stable configuration to the unstable configuration thereof to further rotate said rotatable means and effect the operation of said at least another switching means form the one circuit controlling position toward the another circuit controlling position thereof.
- 23. The device as set forth in claim 21 further comprising adjusting means in said housing engaged with said snap action means and operable generally for adjusting the third level of the force at which said force transmitting means operates said snap action means from the stable configuration toward the unstable configuration thereof.
- 24. A control device comprising:
- a housing a seat therein;
- force transmitting means for movement in said housing in response to an applied force exerted on said force transmitting means;
- caged resilient means in said housing and engaged with said force transmitting means for obviating its movement when the applied force is less than a first preselected level;
- snap action means engaged with said force transmitting means so as to be displaced in an at-rest position from said housing seat and operable generally for discrete snap action movement between a stable configuration and an unstable configuration, said force transmitting means being initially movable in response to the applied force in excess of the first preselected level against the caged resilient means to conjointly move said snap action means from its at-rest position into a seated position engaged with said housing seat when the applied force exerted on said force transmitting means attains a second preselected level greater than the first preselected level and said force transmitting means being thereafter further movable against said caged resilient means to effect the discrete snap action movement of said snap action means from the stable configuration into the unstable configuration thereof when the applied force exerted on said force transmitting means attains a third preselected level greater than the second preselected level.
- 25. The device as set forth in claim 24 further comprising a set of switching means in said housing and operable generally for switching between a plurality of switching modes, respectively, and motion translating means interconnected between said snap action means and at least one of said switching means for initially effecting the operation of at least said at least one switching means with creeping movement from one of the switching modes to another of the switching modes thereof upon the movement of said snap action means between its at-rest and seated positions and for thereafter engaging at least another of said switching means to effect its operation with snap action movement from one of the switching modes to another of the switching modes thereof upon the discrete snap action movement of said snap action means between its stable and unstable configurations.
- 26. The device as set forth in claim 24 further comprising means in said housing and arranged in interconnecting relation with said snap action means for urging said snap action means into its at-rest position engaged with said force transmitting means.
- 27. The device as set forth in claim 26 wherein said urging means includes means for adjustment to at least in part define the third preselected level of the applied force.
