Abstract
A control panel for an ultrasonic imaging system. A pointing device such as a track ball is centrally located on the control panel and a plurality of buttons and control knobs are arranged around the pointing device in a manner that is ergonomically improved and enhances intuitive system operation. For example, a plurality of image mode selection buttons may be arranged in a substantially linear fashion and located above the pointing device on the control panel. The imaging mode selection buttons preferably are arranged from left to right in order of anticipated use or in order of anticipated frequency of use.
Description




BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION




For the past several years, substantial attention has been directed to the field of intravascular ultrasonic imaging systems. Such systems generally include an imaging catheter assembly, a motor drive unit and an imaging subsystem. The imaging catheter assembly is coupled to the motor drive unit, and the motor drive unit is coupled to the imaging subsystem. An imaging transducer is provided within a distal extremity of the catheter assembly and is electronically coupled to the imaging subsystem via the motor drive unit. Conventional imaging subsystems generally include a computer-based image processing system and a display. Thus, when the distal extremity of the catheter assembly is inserted, for example, into a body lumen such as a coronary vessel, an image of an interior surface and/or the structures comprising a wall of the lumen may be depicted on the display. This enables physicians to gain valuable information regarding, for example, occlusions that may exist within, for example, coronary vessels due to the build-up of atherosclerotic plaque.




While intravascular ultrasonic imaging systems are very valuable tools to physicians, the use of such systems is often quite complicated and non-intuitive. One reason for this is that the control panels of such systems are not laid out in an intuitive manner. Indeed, conventional control panels are often cluttered with buttons, potentiometers, track balls, and other devices that are not well organized and, as a result, substantial training is often required to educate imaging personnel with regard to even basic imaging functions that are performed by such systems.




Accordingly, it is believed that those skilled in the art would find an innovative control panel with improved ergonomic features and/or an intuitive control group layout to be quite useful.




SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION




In one innovative aspect, the present invention is directed to an innovative control panel for an intravascular ultrasonic imaging system. The control panel preferably has a centrally located track ball, or other pointing device, and a plurality of subsystem control groups that are arranged around the pointing device in an intuitive manner.




For example, in one preferred embodiment, a plurality of imaging mode selection buttons are provided within a region of the control panel just forward of the pointing device and within a region of the control panel that is generally below a display screen of the imaging system. The imaging mode selection buttons preferably are arranged from left to right in order of anticipated use and/or in order of anticipated frequency of use.




Similarly, in another preferred embodiment, an imaging initiation button, record button and pullback button are arranged in a linear fashion adjacent one side of the pointing device. For example, in a presently preferred embodiment, the image initiation, record and pullback buttons are located directly to the left of the pointing device and are arranged in anticipated order of use from a forward region of the control panel to a rearward region of the control panel. It will be appreciated that the term “forward,” as used herein, refers to a location generally further away from a user of the system, whereas the term “rearward” is meant to denote a location closer to a user of the system. Thus, when initiating an imaging sequence, a user of a system in accordance with the present invention may reach out to depress the image initiation button and, upon withdrawing his or her hand or arm, easily depress the record button and, if desired, the pullback button.




In still other innovative embodiments, the pointing device is located in a region between an image processing control group and an image analysis control group. The image processing control group may comprise, for example, a depth of field or “zoom” control knob and a plurality of gain control devices including a master gain control knob, a plurality of time gain control potentiometers and a time gain control (TGC) on/off switch. The image analysis control group may comprise, for example, a trace assist button, a bookmark button, a print button and a jog shuttle control assembly including a jog shuttle knob, play button, stop button and pause button.




In a further innovative aspect, the control console may include a pop-out keyboard. Thus, a control panel in accordance with the present invention may take advantage of a relatively large keyboard without limiting to any signifcant degree the functionality of the control panel.




In view of the foregoing, it is an object of the present invention to provide an improved control panel for use with ultrasonic imaging systems.




It also is an object of the present invention to provide a control panel having improved ergonomic characteristics and an intuitive control group layout such that minimal training is required to operate the controls of the control panel.




Other objects and features of the present invention will become apparent from consideration of the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.

Claims
  • 1. A control panel for an intravascular ultrasonic imaging system comprisinga pointing means for pointing to a selected object, the pointing means being located within a central region of said control panel to facilitate both right-handed and left-handed operation of said pointing means, and an imaging mode selection control means, said imaging mode selection control means being located within a region of said control panel forward of said pointing means and generally below a screen of a monitor of said imaging system, and said imaging mode selection control means being arranged by order of anticipated use, wherein said imaging mode selection control means comprises an intravascular ultrasound image selection control means, a long view image selection control means, and an x-ray image control means, said long view image selection control means being disposed between said intravascular ultrasound image selection control means and said x-ray image selection control means.
  • 2. The control panel of claim 1 wherein said pointing means is a trackball, mouse, touchpad, knob, or button.
  • 3. The control panel of claim 1 wherein at least one of said intravascular ultrasound image selection control means, said long view image selection control means and said x-ray image control means is a button or knob.
  • 4. A control panel for an intravascular ultrasonic imaging system comprising:a pointing means located within a central region of said control panel to facilitate both right-handed and left-handed operation of said pointing means, an imaging mode selection control means, said imaging mode selection control means being located within a region of said control panel forward of said pointing means and generally below a screen of a monitor of said imaging system, and said imaging mode selection control means being arranged by order of anticipated use, and an image activation control means, a record control means and a pullback control means, said image activation control means, record control means and pullback control means being arranged substantially in a line and disposed to one side of said pointing means, and said record control means being disposed between said image activation control means and said pullback control means.
  • 5. The control panel of claim 4, wherein said image activation control means is located forward of said record control means on said control panel.
  • 6. The control panel of claim 4 further comprising an image processing control means, said image processing control means being located generally to one side of said pointing means on said control panel, and said image processing control means including a master gain adjustment means, a plurality of time gain control means, and a time gain control on/off means.
  • 7. The control panel of claim 4 further comprising an image playback control means, said image playback control means being located generally to one side of said pointing means and including a play control means, pause control means, stop control means and jog shuttle control means.
  • 8. The control panel of claim 7 further comprising an image analysis control means, said image analysis control means being located generally forward of said image playback control means on said control panel and comprising a trace assist control means and a bookmark control means.
  • 9. The control panel of claim 8 wherein said image analysis control means further comprises a speckle reduction control means, said image analysis control means are arranged in a generally linear fashion, and said trace assist control means is located between said speckle reduction and bookmark control means.
  • 10. The control panel of claim 4 wherein said pointing means is a trackball, mouse, touchpad, knob, or button.
  • 11. The control panel of claim 4 wherein at least one of said image activation control means, said record control means and said pullback control means is a button or knob.
  • 12. A control panel for an ultrasonic imaging system comprising:a pointing means, said pointing means being located within a central area of said control panel, and an image activation control means, record control means and pullback initiation control means being located to one side of said pointing means, said image activation control means, record control means and pullback control means being arranged generally in a line and extending from a forward portion of said control panel to a rearward portion of said control panel with said record control means being located generally between said image activation and pullback control means.
  • 13. The control panel of claim 12, wherein said pointing means comprises a device selected from a group of a trackball pointing means and a touch pad pointing means.
  • 14. The control panel of claim 12 further comprising a pop-out key board means.
  • 15. The control panel of claim 12 further comprising an image processing control group, an imaging mode selection control group, and an image playback control group, said image processing control group being located to one side of said pointing means, said image playback control group being located to another side of said pointing means, and said imaging mode selection control group being located forward of said pointing means within an area of said control board that is located generally between said image processing control group and said image playback control group.
  • 16. The control panel of claim 15 further comprising an image analysis control group, said image analysis control group being located generally forward of said image playback control group and being located generally between said image playback control group and said imaging mode selection control group.
  • 17. The control panel of claim 16, whereinsaid image processing control group comprises a master gain control means, a depth of field control means, and a plurality of time gain control means, said imaging mode selection control group comprises an intravascular ultrasonic imaging select control means, a longview image select control means, an X-ray image select control means and an overhead display select control means, said image analysis group comprises a trace assist control means and a bookmark control means, and said image playback group comprises a jog shuttle control means, a play control means, a pause control means and a stop control means.
  • 18. The control panel of claim 17, wherein said image analysis control group further comprises a speckle reduction control means, said image playback group further comprises a print control means, and said image processing control group further comprises an image rotation control means.
  • 19. The control panel of claim 12 wherein said pointing means is a trackball, mouse, touchpad, knob, or button.
  • 20. The control panel of claim 12 wherein at least one of said image activation control means, said record control means and said pullback initiation control means is a button or knob.
