Claims
- 1. A motor vehicle anti-theft device adapted to engage and disable a control pedal assembly of the vehicle spaced rearwardly from the fire wall of the vehicle, said device comprising:
an axially extending strut structure having a forward foot portion; a disabling structure mounted to the strut structure and configured to be positioned on opposite sides of a portion of the pedal assembly to disable the pedal assembly; means mounting the strut structure for axially forward movement relative to the disabling structure whereby, following positioning of the disabling structure on opposite sides of the pedal assembly portion, the strut structure may be moved axially forwardly relative to the disabling structure to move the foot portion into engagement with the fire wall; and means for locking the strut structure and the disabling structure against contracting axial movement.
- 2. An anti-theft device according to claim 1 wherein:
the disabling structure includes a lock member moveable relative to another portion of the disabling structure; the locking means includes a key lock having first and second extendible strikers moveable to retracted positions by the key; the first striker is operative when extended to preclude movement of the lock member; and the second striker is operative when extended to preclude axial movement of the strut structure relative to the disabling structure.
- 3. An anti-theft device according to claim 1 wherein:
the pedal assembly includes a pedal arm and a pedal pad; the device is intended to be positioned on opposite sides of the pedal arm; the disabling structure defines an opening sized to receive the pedal arm and having an entrance throat; the disabling structure further includes a lock bar mounted for movement between an open position in which the entrance throat is opened to allow insertion of the pedal arm into the opening and removal of the pedal arm from the opening and a closed position in which the bar obstructs the entrance throat to trap the pedal arm in the opening.
- 4. An anti-theft device according to claim 3 wherein:
the locking means includes a key lock having first and second extendible strikers moveable to retracted positions by the key; the first striker is operative when extended to preclude movement of the bar to its open position; and the second striker is operative when extended to preclude contracting axial movement of the strut structure relative to the disabling structure.
- 5. An anti-theft device according to claim 3 wherein:
the disabling structure includes an axially extending tubular member; the opening is defined in the tubular member; the lock bar is mounted for sliding movement within the tubular member between its open and closed positions; and the strut structure comprises an elongated strut rod including a rearward portion mounted for sliding movement within the tubular member and a forward portion extending forwardly from a forward end of the tubular member and attached to the foot portion.
- 6. An anti-theft device according to claim 5 wherein:
the device further includes a key lock and a lock housing rigidly secured to a rearward end of the tubular member and defining a key lock cavity receiving the key lock; the lock bar functions at its forward end, with the lock bar in its closed position, to block the entrance throat of the opening and includes a rearward end positioned proximate the key lock cavity and defining a detent structure; the key lock includes first and second extendible strikers moveable to retracted positions by the key; the first striker is operative when extended to coact with the lock bar detent structure to lock the lock bar in its closed position; and the second striker is operative when extended to preclude contracting axial movement of the strut rod relative to the tubular member.
- 7. An anti-theft device according to claim 6 wherein:
the device further includes an actuator rod positioned slidably within the tubular member and drive means operative in response to rearward movement of the actuator rod relative to the tubular member to generate forward movement of the strut rod relative to the tubular member; the actuator rod includes a detent portion positioned proximate the key lock cavity; and the second striker coacts with the detent portion of the actuator rod.
- 8. An anti-theft device according to claim 7 wherein:
the drive means includes a rack structure at the forward end of the actuator rod, a rack structure at the rearward end of the strut rod, and a gear interposed between the rack structures and operative in response to rearward movement of the actuator rod to generate forward movement of the strut rod.
- 9. A motor vehicle anti-theft device adapted to engage and disable a control pedal assembly of the vehicle spaced rearwardly from the fire wall of the vehicle, the pedal assembly including a pedal arm and a pedal pad, the device comprising:
an elongated tube having an opening in a side wall of the tube proximate a forward end of the tube sized to receive the pedal arm; an elongated lock bar mounted slidably within the tube and including a rearward end defining a detent structure and a forward end adapted to obstruct the opening in response to forward sliding movement of the lock bar within the tube, whereby to entrap the pedal arm positioned in the opening; a strut rod mounted slidably within the tube and including a forward end projecting forwardly from the forward end of the tube and a rearward end defining a rack structure; a foot mounted on the forward end of the strut rod; an actuator rod mounted slidably within the tube and including a forward end defining a rack structure paralleling the rack structure of the strut rod and further defining a detent structure rearwardly of the rack structure; gear means interconnecting the rack structures and operative in response to rearward sliding movement of the actuator rod to generate forward sliding movement of the strut rod and move the foot into engagement with the vehicle fire wall with the pedal arm positioned in the opening; and a key lock mounted proximate a rearward end of the tube and including a first extendible striker coacting with the lock bar detent structure to releasably lock the lock bar relative to the tube and a second extendible striker coacting with the actuator rod detent structure to releasably lock the actuator rod, and thereby the strut rod, relative to the tube.
- 10. A method of preventing theft of a motor vehicle having a control pedal assembly spaced rearwardly from the fire wall of the vehicle, said method comprising:
providing a disabling device including a disabling structure and an axially extending strut structure moveable axially relative to the disabling structure and having a forward foot portion; positioning the disabling structure on opposite sides of a portion of the pedal assembly to disable the pedal assembly; moving the strut structure axially forwardly relative to the disabling structure to move the forward foot portion into engagement with the vehicle fire wall; and locking the strut structure and the disabling structure against contracting axial movement.
- 11. A method according to claim 10 wherein:
the disabling structure includes a lock member moveable relative to another portion of the disabling structure; and the method includes the further step of moving the lock member relative to the other portion of the disabling structure.
- 12. A method according to claim 11 wherein the step of moving the lock member is performed before the step of moving the strut structure.
- 13. A method according to claim 11 wherein the step of moving the lock member is performed after the step of moving the strut structure.
- 14. A method according to claim 11 wherein the method includes the further steps of releasably locking the lock member relative to the other portion of the disabling structure following movement of the lock member relative to the other portion of the disabling structure and releasably locking the strut structure relative to the disabling structure following movement of the strut structure relative to the disabling structure.
- 15. A method according to claim 14 wherein:
the step of releasably locking the lock member relative to the other portion of the disabling structure comprises providing a detent structure moveable with the lock member and providing a key lock having an extendible striker coacting with the detent structure.
- 16. A method according to claim 14 wherein:
the step of releasably locking the strut structure relative to the disabling structure comprises providing a detent structure moveable with the strut structure and providing a key lock having an extendible striker coacting with the detent structure.
- 17. A method according to claim 14 wherein:
the step of releasably locking the lock member relative to the other portion of the disabling structure comprises providing a first detent structure moveable with the lock member and providing a key lock having a first extendible striker coacting with the first detent structure; and the step of releasably locking the strut structure relative to the disabling structure comprises providing a detent structure moveable with the strut structure and providing a second extendible striker controlled by the key lock and coacting with the second detent structure.
- 18. A method of preventing theft of a motor vehicle having a control pedal assembly spaced rearwardly from the fire wall of the vehicle, said method comprising:
providing a disabling device including a disabling structure having a lock member moveable relative to another portion of the disabling structure and an axially extending strut structure moveable axially relative to the disabling structure and having a forward foot portion; positioning the disabling structure on opposite sides of a portion of the pedal assembly to embrace the pedal assembly portion; moving the lock member relative to the other portion of the disabling structure to entrap the pedal assembly portion; locking the lock member against movement relative to the other portion of the disabling structure; moving the strut structure axially forwardly relative to the disabling structure to move the forward foot portion into engagement with the vehicle fire wall; and locking the strut structure and the disabling structure against contracting axial movement.
- 19. A method according to claim 18 wherein the pedal assembly includes a pedal arm and a pedal pad and the embraced and entrapped portion of the pedal assembly comprises the pedal arm.
- 20. A method according to claim 18 wherein the step of moving the lock member relative to the other portion of the disabling structure is performed before the step of moving the strut structure relative to the disabling structure.
