Claims
- 1. A laser system comprising:
- a plurality of solid state laser gain media;
- an optical pump source associated with each gain medium for exciting the gain medium;
- a power supply for energizing the optical pump sources; and
- a processor for controlling the power supply to deliver pulses of energy to the pump sources in order to sequentially excite the gain media to generate laser output pulses, said processor including a memory store which maintains a record of the efficiency associated with each gain medium, said processor determining the energy to be supplied by the power supply to each pump source based in part on the stored efficiency record.
- 2. A laser system as recited in claim 1 further including a detector for measuring the laser output pulses from the gain media and generating a signal responsive thereto and wherein said processor determines the energy to be supplied by the power supply to each pump source based in part on the signal generated by the detector.
- 3. A laser system comprising:
- four laser heads, each head including a solid state laser rod and a flashlamp for exciting the rod;
- a power supply for sequentially delivering a pulse of energy to each of the flashlamps so that the heads emit laser output pulses;
- optics for combining the sequential laser output pulses along a common path; and
- a processor for controlling the power supply, said processor including a memory store having the efficiency of each laser head stored therein, said processor utilizing the information about the efficiency of each head to control the power supply in the manner such that the laser output pulses from each of the laser heads has substantially the same magnitude.
- 4. A laser system as recited in claim 3 further including a detector for measuring the laser output pulses from the gain media and generating a signal responsive thereto and wherein said processor determines the energy to be supplied by the power supply to each laser head based in part on the signal generated by the detector.
- 5. A method of operating a laser system having a plurality of individual laser rods excited by an associated pump source and a processor including a memory store, the method comprising the steps of:
- empirically determining efficiency of each laser rod;
- storing the determined efficiency of each laser rod in the memory store; and
- sequentially exciting each rod with light from the associated pump source to generate a sequence of laser output pulses, wherein the level of excitation supplied to each rod is based in part upon the determined efficiency of the associated laser rod stored in the memory store.
- 6. A method as recited in claim 5 wherein the level of excitation supplied to each rod is selected so that the laser output pulses of all the rods can be maintained at substantially the same magnitude.
- 7. A method as recited in claim 6 further including the steps of:
- monitoring the power of the laser output pulses; and
- controlling the excitation energy supplied to each rod based in part on the monitored power.
