- a bull gear having a slot formed therein, said bearing block being engaged by said slot.
- 9. A differential assembly as set forth in claim 8, further comprising a spring mounted on said shaft to engage said bearing block to force said bearing block towards said gear.
- 10. A differential assembly as set forth in claim 8, wherein said shaft has an opening bored in one end, and a fastener mounted in said opening to secure said bearing block to said shaft.
- 11. A differential assembly as set forth in claim 10, wherein said fastener is a bolt.
- 12. A controlled traction cartridge for use in connection with a differential, comprising
- a shaft;
- an interior bearing surface;
- a bearing block mounted on said shaft;
- a gear rotatably mounted on said shaft between said interior bearing surface and said bearing block, said bearing block engaging said gear to maintain said gear in frictional engagement with said interior bearing surface.
- 13. A controlled traction cartridge as set forth in claim 12, further comprising a spring mounted on said shaft axially external to said bearing block.
- 14. A controlled traction cartridge as set forth in claim 13, wherein said shaft has an opening in one end thereof and further comprising a fastener mounted in said opening.
- 15. A differential assembly as set forth in claim 14, wherein said shaft is a single unit.
- 16. A differential assembly as set forth in claim 15, wherein said opening in said shaft extends through the entire length thereof, and said fastener extends through the entire length of said shaft and is secured at a second end of said shaft by a mating fastener.
- 17. A differential assembly as set forth in claim 12, further comprising a second interior bearing surface, a second bearing block mounted on said shaft, and a second gear mounted on said shaft between said interior bearing surface and said second bearing block, said second bearing block engaging said second gear to maintain said gear in frictional engagement with said second interior bearing surface.
- 18. A differential assembly as set forth in claim 14, wherein said fastener is a bolt.
- 19. A differential assembly as set forth in claim 16, wherein said mating fastener is a nut.
- 20. A differential assembly as set forth in claim 12, wherein said gear is a bevel gear.
- 21. A controlled traction cartridge for use in connection with a differential, comprising
- a shaft mechanism comprising a first end and a second end, and an interior portion forming a first and second interior bearing surface;
- a first bearing block mounted on the first end of said shaft mechanism;
- a second bearing block mounted on the second end of said shaft mechanism;
- a first gear rotatable mounted on said first end of said shaft mechanism between said first interior bearing surface and said first bearing block, said first bearing block being moveable along said shaft mechanism to force said first gear against the first interior bearing surface to frictionally inhibit rotation of said first gear; and
- a second gear rotatable mounted on said second end of said shaft mechanism between said second interior bearing surface and said second bearing block, said second bearing block being moveable along said shaft mechanism to force said second gear against the second interior bearing surface to frictionally inhibit rotation of said second gear.
