Claims
- 1. A process for maintaining substantially constant the final weight of hollow members produced from a plastic material by extrusion blow molding wherein a succession of preforms is continuously extruded from a discharge opening of an extrusion head connected to an extrusion press, the preforms being successively blown in a mold means to form said hollow members, the process comprising:
- detecting the final weight of at least one hollow member after leaving the mold means after blowing thereof;
- comparing said detected final weight to a reference value representing a desired weight;
- adjusting the size of the discharge opening in response to the comparison such that the volume and therefore the weight of a succeeding preform increases when the final weight is less than the reference value and decreases when the final weight is greater than the reference value;
- detecting when the length of a preform has reached a preselected length;
- closing the mold about the preform when the preform attains the preselected length to produce a substantially constant length of preform; and
- maintaining substantially constant the time for extruding the preform to the preselected length.
- 2. A process as set forth in claim 1 wherein said extrusion press is a screw-type press and the time required for extruding a preform is controlled by controlling the speed of rotation of the screw of the press.
- 3. A process as set forth in claim 2 wherein the speed of rotation of said screw is varied in response to changes in the size of said discharge opening.
- 4. A process as set forth in claim 2 wherein, after there has been a change in the speed of extrusion of the press, the weight comparison operation is performed only after the press operating conditions have restabilized and, after stabilization, a period of time has passed which corresponds to the number of working cycles between the moment of such restabilization and the moment of detecting the weight of the hollow member.
- 5. A process as set forth in claim 1 wherein the weight of succeeding individual ones of said hollow members is compared to said reference value.
- 6. A process as set forth in claim 5 wherein a mean weight is calculated from the detected weights of a plurality of successive individual hollow members, and the mean weight is compared to said reference value.
- 7. A process as set forth in claim 6 wherein the operation of forming the mean value from said weights of a plurality of hollow members is performed continuously and after each operating cycle the respective oldest hollow member of the group thereof used for the preceding operation of forming the mean weight is replaced by a fresh said hollow member.
- 8. A process as set forth in claim 1 wherein the operative size of said discharge opening is adjusted only after the detected weight of at least one hollow member differs from said reference value by more than a predetermined amount.
- 9. A process as set forth in claim 1 wherein only deviations of said detected weight from said reference value, which are within a given weight range, are operative for adjusting the size of said discharge opening.
- 10. A process as set forth in claim 1 wherein the extent of the change in the size of said discharge opening in response to the result of said comparison operation is dependent on the extent of the deviation of said detected weight from said reference value.
- 11. A process as set forth in claim 1 wherein a change in the size of said discharge opening is effected in a plurality of steps.
- 12. A process as set forth in claim 1 wherein the size of said discharge opening is altered, in response to the result of said comparison operation, between two successive extruded preforms.
- 13. A process as set forth in claim 1 wherein the speed of extrusion of the extrusion press and the size of the discharge opening are variable in an interdependent mode.
- 14. A process as set forth in claim 1 wherein, after the operative size of said discharge opening has been adjusted, the respective following operation of comparing the weight of the hollow member to said reference value is performed after a period of time which corresponds at least to the number of working cycles which take place between the moment of production of the hollow member and the moment of detecting the weight of the same hollow member.
