Claims
- 1. An apparatus for controlling the introduction of air into an exhaust pipe of an internal combustion engine, comprising:
- means for introducing air into said exhaust pipe of said internal combustion engine upstream of a catalyst via an air introducing pipe;
- air heating means for heating the air introduced into said air introducing pipe;
- catalyst heating means for heating the catalyst; and
- controlling means for varying an amount of air introduced into said exhaust pipe at a predetermined time interval.
- 2. The controlling apparatus as claimed in claim 1, further comprising an exhaust-gas temperature sensor for detecting the temperature of exhaust gases and a catalyst temperature sensor for detecting the temperature of the catalyst, wherein the amount of air introduced and the time interval of variation thereof are controlled in accordance with one of the exhaust gas temperature and the catalyst temperature.
- 3. The controlling apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein at least one of a time interval at which the amount of air introduced into said exhaust pipe is varied, an amount of variation, an amount of air heated, and an amount of catalyst heated is varied in accordance with an operational parameter of said engine.
