- 4. A rotational or angular phase control apparatus interposed between first and second rotational shafts for varying a rotational or angular phase between said first and second rotational shafts, said apparatus comprising:
- a housing connected to said first rotational shaft and rotatable together with said first rotational shaft;
- a rotor connected to said second rotational shaft and accommodated in said housing so as to cause a rotation within a predetermined angle with respect to said housing;
- said rotor and said housing cooperatively defining a pair of chambers whose volumes are oppositely variable in accordance with a rotational position of said rotor with respect to said housing; and
- a lock mechanism for locking said rotor with said housing at a predetermined angular position to restrict a rotational displacement of said rotor in said housing, wherein
- said lock mechanism comprises:
- a locking member retractable in one of said housing and said rotor, so as to lock said rotor with said housing in its protruding position and disengaging said rotor from said housing in its retracted position;
- a mechanical urging member urging said locking member toward said protruding position; and
- a hydraulic urging mechanism for introducing operational fluid of said chambers to said locking member to push said locking member back to said retracted position against a resilient force of said mechanical urging member when the operational fluid is supplied to only one of said chambers and when the operational fluid is supplied to only the other of said chambers.
- 5. The rotational or angular phase control apparatus in accordance with claim 4, wherein said mechanical urging member yields to a hydraulic pressure of said hydraulic urging mechanism even when said operation fluid is supplied to only one of said chambers.
- 6. The rotational or angular phase control apparatus in accordance with claim 4, wherein said locking member comprises a piston which receives a hydraulic pressure of said operation fluid supplied to said pair of chambers by said hydraulic urging mechanism.
- 7. The rotational or angular phase control apparatus in accordance with claim 4, wherein said locking member comprises a piston which is slidable in a direction parallel to said first and second rotational shafts.
- 8. A rotational or angular phase control apparatus interposed between first and second rotational shafts for varying a rotational or angular phase between said first and second rotational shafts, said apparatus comprising:
- a housing connected to said first rotational shaft and having at least one sector chamber arranged about a rotational axis of said housing;
- a rotor connected to said second rotational shaft and having a vane rotatably accommodated in said sector chamber to define an advance chamber positioned at one side of said vane and a retard chamber positioned at the other side of said vane;
- a piston shiftable between a lock position and an unlock position, for locking said housing and said rotor at said lock position and allowing relative rotation between said housing and said rotor at said unlock position; and
- a hydraulic mechanism comprising a piston chamber introducing operational fluid to shift said piston toward said unlock position, a first fluid passage connecting said piston chamber to said advance chamber and a second fluid passage connecting said piston chamber to said retard chamber.
- 9. The rotational or angular phase control apparatus in accordance with claim 8, wherein a member is provided to prevent said first fluid passage from directly communicating with said second fluid passage.
- 10. The rotational or angular phase control apparatus in accordance with claim 8, wherein said piston chamber comprises a first chamber only communicating with said advance chamber and a second chamber only communicating with said retard chamber.
- 11. The rotational or angular phase control apparatus in accordance with claim 8, wherein said piston is slidable in a direction parallel to said first and second rotational shafts.
- 12. The rotational or angular phase control apparatus in accordance with claim 8, wherein said piston is located at a predetermined position of said vane to lock said rotor with said housing.
