Claims
- 1. A convertible ladder comprising:
a first ladder portion having a locking mechanism proximate a first end thereof; a second ladder portion having a second locking mechanism proximate a first end thereof; and a static hinge mechanism, wherein the static hinge mechanism is attached to the first ladder portion with the first locking mechanism proximate the first end of the first ladder portion, wherein the static hinge mechanism is attached to the second ladder portion with the second locking mechanism proximate the first end of the second ladder portion, wherein the static hinge mechanism maintains the first ladder portion in a stationary relation with respect to the second ladder portion, and wherein the static hinge mechanism maintains the first ladder portion in a stationary relation with respect to the second ladder portion.
- 2. The convertible ladder of claim 1, wherein the static hinge mechanism is linear and has a pair of hinge legs.
- 3. The convertible ladder of claim 1, wherein the static hinge mechanism has a first plate, a second plate, and an intermediate plate mounted between the first plate and the second plate.
- 4. The convertible ladder of claim 3, wherein a recess is defined between the first plate and the second plate, and wherein the intermediate plate limits a distance that the first ladder portion and the second ladder portion are extendable into the recess.
- 5. The convertible ladder of claim 3, wherein at least one of the first plate and the second plate has an aperture formed therein that is adapted to receive a portion of the first locking mechanism or the second locking mechanism.
- 6. The convertible ladder of claim 1, wherein the first and second locking mechanisms are movable between an engaged position and a disengaged position.
- 7. The convertible ladder of claim 6, wherein the first and second locking mechanisms are biased to the engaged position.
- 8. The convertible ladder of claim 1, wherein the first ladder portion and the second ladder portion each have a first side rail, a second side rail and a plurality of rungs that extend between the pair of first and second side rails.
- 9. The convertible ladder of claim 8, wherein the static hinge mechanism comprises a first static hinge portion and a second static hinge portion, wherein the first static hinge portion releasably attaches the first side rails on the first and second ladder portions, and wherein the second static hinge portion releasably attaches the second side rails on the first and second ladder portions.
- 10. The convertible ladder of claim 8, wherein the first and second side rails each have a C-shape with a main section and a pair of side sections that extend from the main section to define a recess therein, and wherein the recess is adapted to receive a portion of the static hinge mechanism.
- 11. The convertible ladder of claim 1, wherein the first ladder portion is slidably attachable to the second ladder portion using the first locking mechanism.
- 12. A ladder comprising:
a first ladder portion having a first rung; a second ladder portion having a first rung; a first locking mechanism attached to the first rung of the first ladder portion; a second locking mechanism attached to the first rung of the second ladder portion; and a static hinge mechanism, wherein the static hinge mechanism is attached to the first ladder portion with the first locking mechanism, wherein the static hinge mechanism is attached to the second ladder portion with the second locking mechanism, wherein the static hinge mechanism maintains the first ladder portion in a stationary relation with respect to the second ladder portion.
- 13. The convertible ladder of claim 12, wherein the static hinge mechanism has a first static hinge and a second static hinge, and wherein the first and second static hinges are linear and have a pair of hinge legs.
- 14. The convertible ladder of claim 13, wherein the first and second static hinges have a first plate, a second plate, and an intermediate plate between the first plate and the second plate.
- 15. The convertible ladder of claim 14, wherein the first and second plates each have an aperture proximate a first end and an aperture proximate a second end.
- 16. The convertible ladder of claim 12, wherein the first ladder portion has a first side rail, a second side rail, and a plurality of rungs.
- 17. The convertible ladder of claim 12, wherein the first rung of the first and second ladder portions have an inner surface.
- 18. The convertible ladder of claim 16, wherein the first and second side rails of the first ladder portion have apertures that align with the inner surface of the first rung of the first ladder portion and wherein the first and second side rails of the second ladder portion have apertures that align with the inner surface of the first rung of the second ladder portion.
- 19. The convertible ladder of claim 15, wherein a recess is defined by a space between the first and second plates, and wherein a first end and a second end of the intermediate plate are used to align the apertures of the first and second plate with the inner surface of the ladder rungs and the apertures in the side rails of the first and second ladder portions.
- 20. The convertible ladder of claim 12, wherein the first and second locking mechanism each have a first bar that aligns with the aperture in the first side rail and wherein the first and second locking mechanism each have a second bar that aligns with the aperture in the second side rail.
- 21. The convertible ladder of claim 20, wherein the first and second bars of the first and second mechanisms can be moved between an engaged position and a disengaged position.
- 22. The convertible ladder of claim 21, wherein when the first and second bars of the first locking mechanism are in the engaged position, the first and second bars extend through the apertures in the first and second side rails of the first ladder portion, through the apertures in the first and second static hinge mechanism, and into the inner surface of the first rung of the first ladder portion.
- 23. The convertible ladder of claim 21, wherein when the first and second bars of the second locking mechanism are in the engaged position, the first and second bars extend through the apertures in the first and second side rails of the second ladder portion, through the apertures in the first and second static hinge mechanism, and into the inner surface of the first rung of the second ladder portion.
