Claims
- 1. A vacuum cleaner adapted to be used in an upright mode or, alternatively, in a portable mode, comprising power transmission means for self-propelling the vacuum cleaner when used in the upright mode, first handle means usable during operation in the upright mode, control means arranged to energize the transmission in response to manually applied pulling or pushing forces on the first handle means, and second handle means usable during operation in the portable mode and arranged to prevent said control means from energizing said transmission during operation in the portable mode.
- 2. A vacuum cleaner as set forth in claim 1 wherein said power transmission means selectively propels the vacuum cleaner in either a forward or reverse direction.
- 3. A convertible vacuum cleaner that can be used in an upright mode or a portable mode comprising:
- a. a housing;
- b. a plurality of wheels connected to and supporting said housing;
- c. an upright handle selectively connectable to said housing for use in said upright mode;
- d. transmission means located within said housing for propelling at least one of said wheels during use in said upright mode, said transmission means being responsive to forces exerted by an operator on said upright handle;
- e. a portable handle selectively connectable to said housing in place of said upright handle for use in said portable mode; and
- f. structure integral with said portable handle and said transmission means for preventing activation of said transmission means.
- 4. The vacuum cleaner of claim 3 wherein the transmission means is capable of forward the reverse drive.
- 5. A convertible vacuum cleaner that can be used in an upright mode or a portable mode comprising:
- a. a housing;
- b. a plurality of wheels connected to and supporting said housing;
- c. a pivot assembly connected to said housing;
- d. an upright handle selectively mounted on said housing during use in said upright mode, said upright handle being operatively connected to said pivot assembly during use in said upright mode;
- e. transmission means located within said housing for propelling at least one of said wheels when used in said upright mode, said transmission means being responsive to said pivot assembly which pivots in response to forces exerted by an operator on said upright handle;
- f. a portable handle selectively mounted on said housing in place of said upright handle during use in said portable mode; and,
- g. a blade connected to said portable handle, said blade engaging said pivot assembly when said portable handle is mounted on said vacuum cleaner, said blade preventing pivoting of said pivot assembly and thereby preventing activation of said transmission means.
- 6. The vacuum cleaner of claim 5 wherein the transmission means is capable of forward and reverse drive.
