Claims
- 1. A pin for connecting chain links together to define a section of chain for conveying product along a conveying system, said pin comprising:
opposite end portions for engaging at least one link of the section of chain; a shaft portion extending between said opposite end portions; and a sleeve portion around and at least partially along said shaft portion, said sleeve portion being arranged on said shaft portion to engage another link of the section of chain when said opposite end portions are engaged with the at least one link of the section of chain, said sleeve portion being movable relative to said shaft portion.
- 2. The pin of claim 1, wherein said sleeve portion comprises a toroidal-shaped member.
- 3. The pin of claim 2, wherein said toroidal-shaped member is generally centrally positioned along said shaft portion.
- 4. The pin of claim 3, wherein said sleeve portion comprises opposite spacer portions at opposite ends of said toroidal-shaped member.
- 5. The pin of claim 4, wherein said toroidal-shaped member and said opposite spacer portions comprise a unitary sleeve portion.
- 6. The pin of claim 1, wherein said shaft portion comprises a generally cylindrical shaft portion and said sleeve portion comprises a generally cylindrical sleeve portion.
- 7. The pin of claim 1, wherein said sleeve portion is movable on said shaft member.
- 8. The pin of claim 7, wherein at least one of an inner surface of said sleeve portion and an outer surface of said shaft member comprise a low coefficient of friction coating thereon.
- 9. The pin of claim 8, wherein said sleeve portion comprises a metallic material.
- 10. The pin of claim 1, wherein said sleeve portion comprises a low coefficient of friction coating on an outer surface of said sleeve portion which engages the other chain link.
- 11. The pin of claim 1, wherein said sleeve portion is molded onto said shaft portion.
- 12. The pin of claim 11, wherein said shaft portion has a low coefficient of friction coating thereon, said sleeve portion being molded over said coating.
- 13. The pin of claim 11, wherein said pin comprises an I-pin.
- 14. The pin of claim 1, wherein said pin comprises one of a bolted pin and a stud, at least one of said opposite end portions comprising a fastener end for receiving a fastener thereon to retain said pin at the chain links of the section of chain.
- 15. The pin of claim 14, wherein said sleeve portion is removably positioned over said shaft portion when said fastener is removed from said fastener end.
- 16. The pin of claim 1, wherein said sleeve portion comprises a replaceable wear surface component and is removable from said pin to facilitate replacement of said sleeve portion.
- 17. The pin of claim 1, wherein said opposite end portions and said shaft portion of said pin comprise a metallic material and said sleeve portion comprises a polymeric material.
- 18. A section of chain for conveying product along a conveying system, said section of chain comprising:
a first chain link; at least one second chain link having apertures through opposite ends thereof, said at least one second chain link comprises a recessed area surrounding at least a portion of said aperture; and a pin, said pin being configured to connect said first chain link to said at least one second chain link via insertion of said pin through a respective one of said apertures in said at least one second chain link and through an opening in said first chain link, said pin having at least one head portion and a shaft portion, said at least one head portion defining a mating surface, said recessed area rotatably receiving said mating surface of said head portion of said pin, said mating surface being correspondingly formed with said recessed area to facilitate relative rotation therebetween, said mating surface engaging said recessed area of said at least one second chain link and being rotatable relative to said at least one second chain link as said section of chain conveys product along the conveying system.
- 19. The section of chain of claim 18, wherein said aperture comprises a slotted opening having a narrowed region adjacent to said recessed area and a larger diameter region adjacent to said narrowed region.
- 20. The section of chain of claim 19, wherein said head portion of said pin is insertable through said larger diameter region and said shaft portion is slidable through said narrowed region to said recessed area, said mating surface of said head portion engaging said recessed area to retain said pin in said aperture.
- 21. The section of chain of claim 18, wherein said at least one head portion comprises opposite head portions with said shaft portion extending therebetween.
- 22. The section of chain of claim 18, wherein said pin comprises a bolted pin having said head portion and a fastener end opposite said head portion, said shaft portion extending between said fastener end and said head portion.
- 23. The section of chain of claim 18, wherein said pin comprises a toroidal-shaped member positioned at said shaft portion.
- 24. The section of chain of claim 23, wherein said first link includes a concave pocket for engaging and partially receiving said toroidal-shaped member.
- 25. The section of chain of claim 18, wherein said pin comprises a sleeve portion positioned around and at least partially along said shaft portion.
- 26. A section of chain for conveying product along a conveying system, said section of chain comprising:
at least two chain links having apertures through opposite ends thereof; and a pin connecting said chain links together via insertion of said pin through said apertures in said chain links, said pin comprising opposite end portions and a shaft portion extending between said opposite end portions, said shaft portion defining a wear surface which engages at least one of said chain links, said pin being selectably adjustable between at least three positions relative to said chain links to adjust said wear surface of said shaft portion relative to said chain links, said pin being generally non-rotatable relative to said chain links when in each of said at least three positions.
- 27. The section of chain of claim 26, wherein at least one of said end portions of said pin defines at least three engaging portions for selectably engaging corresponding wall portions of said aperture of at least one of said chain links, whereby said pin is generally non-rotatable relative-to said chain links when in each of said at least three positions.
- 28. The section of chain of claim 27, wherein said at least three engaging portions comprise at least three generally equal-sized engaging portions.
- 29. The section of chain of claim 27, wherein said at least three engaging portions comprises three engaging portions.
- 30. The section of chain of claim 27, wherein said at least three engaging portions comprises six engaging portions.
- 31. The section of chain of claim 27, wherein said wear surface comprises at least three wear surface portions corresponding to respective ones of said at least three engaging portions of said end portions of said pin, said pin being selectably rotatable to adjust said wear surface portions relative to said other of said chain links to provide selective engagement of one of said wear surface portions with said other of said chain links.
- 32. The section of chain of claim 27, wherein at least one wall portion of said aperture engages at least one of said engaging portions to limit rotation of said pin relative to said at least one of said chain links.
- 33. A method of adjusting a wear surface of a pin of a section of chain, the section of chain being adapted for conveying product along a conveying system, said method comprising:
providing a section of chain having at least two chain links having apertures through opposite ends thereof and a pin connecting said chain links together via insertion of said pin through said apertures in said chain links, said pin comprising opposite end portions and a shaft portion extending between said opposite end portions, said shaft portion defining a wear surface which engages at least one of said chain links; and non-rotatably positioning said pin relative to said chain links in one of at least three positions, said pin being generally non-rotatable relative to said chain links when in each of said at least three positions; and selectably rotating said pin to a different one of said at least three positions relative to said chain links to adjust said wear surface of said shaft portion relative to said chain links.
- 34. The method of claim 33 including monitoring a degree of wear on a portion of said wear surface of said pin and selectably rotating said pin to limit wear on said portion of said wear surface of said pin.
- 35. The method of claim 33 including marking said pin to indicate which of said at least three positions have been selected.
- 36. A section of chain for conveying product along a conveying system, said section of chain comprising:
at least two chain links, at least one of said chain links defining a pin engaging region, said pin engaging region defining a first wear surface; and a pin for connecting said chain links together, said pin having opposite end portions and a shaft portion, said pin defining a second wear surface, at least one of said first and second wear surfaces comprising a polymeric material.
- 37. The section of chain of claim 36, wherein at least one of said pin engaging regions and said pin has a low coefficient of friction coating thereon.
- 38. The section of chain of claim 37, wherein said coating comprises a diamond like coating at at least one of said first and second wear surfaces.
- 39. The section of chain of claim 38, wherein said at least two chain links comprise a center link and a pair of side links, said center link defining said first wear surface.
- 40. The section of chain of claim 39, wherein said shaft portion of said pin includes a toroidal-shaped member and said pin engaging portion of said center link comprises a concave first wear surface for engaging and partially receiving said toroidal-shaped member, said toroidal-shaped member defining said second wear surface.
- 41. The section of chain of claim 40, wherein said second wear surface comprises said polymeric material.
- 42. The section of chain of claim 40, wherein said concave first wear surface comprises said polymeric material.
- 43. The section of chain of claim 36, wherein said pin comprises a polymeric sleeve at least partially along said shaft portion, said polymeric sleeve defining said second wear surface.
- 44. The section of chain of claim 43, wherein said polymeric sleeve is movable relative to shaft portion.
- 45. The section of chain of claim 44, wherein said polymeric sleeve is removably positioned around said shaft portion.
- 46. The section of chain of claim 43, wherein said polymeric sleeve is molded onto said shaft portion.
- 47. The section of chain of claim 46, wherein said shaft portion comprises a metallic material.
- 48. The section of chain of claim 46, wherein said polymeric sleeve is movable relative to said shaft portion.
- 49. The section of chain of claim 48, wherein said shaft portion has a low coefficient of friction coating thereon, said polymeric sleeve being molded over said coating.
- 50. The section of chain of claim 46, wherein said polymeric sleeve is molded onto a recessed area of said shaft portion.
- 51. The section of chain of claim 43, wherein said polymeric sleeve comprises at least one of a toroidal-shaped portion and a generally cylindrical portion.
- 52. The section of chain of claim 36, wherein said first wear surface comprises said polymeric material.
- 53. The section of chain of claim 36, wherein said second wear surface comprises said polymeric material.
- 54. A section of chain for conveying product along a conveying system, said section of chain comprising:
at least two chain links, at least one of said chain links defining a pin engaging region, said pin engaging region defining a first wear surface; and a pin for connecting said chain links together, said pin having opposite end portions and a shaft portion, said pin defining a second wear surface, at least one of said first wear surface and said second wear surface comprising a replaceable wear surface, whereby said replaceable wear surface is at least one of removable from said at least one of said chain links and removable from said pin to facilitate replacement of said replaceable wear surface.
- 55. The section of chain of claim 54, wherein said replaceable wear surface comprises a polymeric material.
- 56. The section of chain of claim 54, wherein said replaceable wear surface comprises a metallic material.
- 57. The section of chain of claim 54, wherein said second wear surface comprises said replaceable wear surface.
- 58. The section of chain of claim 57, wherein said replaceable wear surface comprises a sleeve positionable around said shaft portion of said pin.
- 59. The section of chain of claim 58, wherein said sleeve comprises at least one of a toroidal-shaped member and a generally cylindrical member.
- 60. The section of chain of claim 58, wherein said sleeve comprises a metallic material.
- 61. The section of chain of claim 58, wherein said sleeve comprises a polymeric material.
- 62. The section of chain of claim 54, wherein said first wear surface comprises said replaceable wear surface.
- 63. The section of chain of claim 62, wherein said replaceable wear surface comprises an insert at an end portion of said at least one chain link, said insert engaging said shaft portion of said pin.
- 64. The section of chain of claim 63, wherein said pin comprises a toroidal-shaped member at said shaft portion, said insert comprising a generally concave surface for engaging and partially receiving said toroidal-shaped member.
- 65. The section of chain of claim 54, wherein at least one of said pin engaging regions and said pin has a low coefficient of friction coating thereon.
- 66. The section of chain of claim 65, wherein said coating comprises a diamond like coating at at least one of said first and second wear surfaces.
- 67. A pin for connecting and retaining at least two chain links of a section of chain, the section of chain being movable to convey product along a conveying system, said pin comprising a shaft portion and a replaceable wear surface member removably positioned around at least a portion of said shaft portion, whereby said replaceable wear surface is removable from said pin to facilitate replacement of said replaceable wear surface.
- 68. The pin of claim 67, wherein said pin comprises at least one fastener end at at least one end of said shaft portion, said at least one fastener end being adapted to receive a fastener thereon to retain said pin at the at least two chain links.
- 69. The pin of claim 68, wherein said replaceable wear surface member comprises a sleeve member which is removably slidable over said at least one fastener end and around said shaft portion.
- 70. The pin of claim 69, wherein said replaceable wear surface member comprises a toroidal-shaped member.
- 71. The pin of claim 70, wherein said pin includes at least one spacer sleeve extending at least partially along said shaft portion between said toroidal-shaped member and a least one end of said shaft portion.
- 72. The pin of claim 71, wherein said toroidal-shaped member and said at least one spacer sleeve comprise a unitary sleeve portion.
- 73. The pin of claim 72, wherein said unitary sleeve portion comprises a metallic material.
- 74. The pin of claim 73, wherein at least one of an inner surface of said unitary sleeve portion and an outer surface of said shaft portion comprise a low coefficient of friction coating thereon.
- 75. The pin of claim 69, wherein said replaceable wear surface member comprises a generally cylindrical-shaped member.
- 76. The pin of claim 68 comprising a head portion at one end of said shaft portion and wherein said at least one fastener end comprises a fastener end at an opposite end of said shaft portion, said pin comprising a bolt-style pin.
- 77. The pin of claim 68, wherein said at least one fastener end comprises opposite fastener ends, said pin comprising a double ended stud pin.
- 78. The pin of claim 67, wherein said replaceable wear surface member comprises a toroidal-shaped member.
- 79. The pin of claim 67, wherein said replaceable wear surface member comprises a generally cylindrical-shaped member.
- 80. The pin of claim 67, wherein said replaceable wear surface member is movably positioned along said shaft portion.
- 81. The pin of claim 67, wherein said replaceable wear surface member is substantially fixedly positioned at said shaft member.
- 82. The pin of claim 67, wherein said replaceable wear surface member comprises a metallic material.
- 83. The pin of claim 67, wherein said replaceable wear surface member comprises a polymeric material.
