Claims
- 1. A diverting system for diverting articles from a conveying surface of a conveyor comprising:
a plurality of movable pushers associated with the conveying surface and adapted to be movable transversely across the conveying surface; a plurality of diverting tracks configured to guide selected ones of said movable pushers across the conveying surface; a plurality of diverters, each said diverter adapted to selectively divert at least one movable pusher along one of said diverting tracks when said diverter is activated into a diverting state; and a controller for selecting at least two diverters from said plurality of diverters, said controller first activating a first one of said selected diverters into the diverting state and subsequently activating a second one of said selected diverters into the diverting state, said second one of said selected diverters being located upstream of said first one of said selected diverters.
- 2. The system of claim 1 further including a sensor for measuring a length of the article to be diverted wherein said at least two diverters are spaced apart by a distance that is less than the measured length of the article to be diverted.
- 3. The system of claim 1 wherein said plurality of diverting tracks includes at least one diverting track having a first shape and at least one diverting track having a second shape different from said first shape.
- 4. The system of claim 1 wherein said controller is further adapted to activate said first diverter when a leading edge of the article to be diverted is adjacent said first diverter, and to activate said second diverter when a trailing edge of the article to be diverted is adjacent said second diverter.
- 5. The system of claim 1 including at least three diverting tracks and at least three diverters, said controller being adapted to select and activate two diverters which are separated from each other by at least one intermediate diverter which is not activated into the diverting state.
- 6. The system of claim 1 wherein said controller is further adapted to activate both said first and second diverters only for a length of time sufficient to cause only a single one of said movable pushers to be diverted by each of said first and second diverters when diverting a single article.
- 7. A method for diverting articles from a conveying surface of a conveyor comprising:
providing a plurality of movable pushers associated with the conveying surface and adapted to be movable transversely across the conveying surface; providing a plurality of diverting tracks configured to guide selected ones of said movable pushers across the conveying surface; providing a plurality of diverters, each said diverter adapted to selectively divert at least one movable pusher along one of said diverting tracks when said diverter is activated into a diverting state; selecting at least two diverters from said plurality of diverters; activating a first one of said selected diverters into the diverting state to divert at least one shoe onto one of said diverting tracks; and activating a second one of said selected diverters into the diverting state to divert another one of said shoes onto another one of said diverting tracks substantially after activating said first one of said selected diverters into the diverting state, said second selected diverter being upstream of said first selected diverter.
- 8. The method of claim 7 further including measuring a length of the article to be diverted and selecting said at least two diverters such that they are spaced apart by a distance less than the length of the article to be diverted.
- 9. The method of claim 7 further including activating said first diverter when a leading edge of the article to be diverted is adjacent said first diverter, and activating said second diverter when a trailing edge of the article to be diverted is adjacent said second diverter.
- 10. The method of claim 7 including selecting and activating two diverters which are separated from each other by at least one intermediate diverter which is not activated into the diverting state.
- 11. The method of claim 7 further including activating both said first and second diverters only for a length of time sufficient to cause only a single one of said movable pushers to be diverted by each of said first and second diverters when diverting a single article.
- 12. A diverting assembly for diverting articles from a conveying surface of a conveyor comprising:
a plurality of movable pushers associated with the conveying surface and adapted to be movable transversely across the conveying surface; a plurality of diverting tracks configured to guide selected ones of said movable pushers across the conveying surface; a plurality of diverters, each said diverter adapted to selectively divert at least one movable pusher along one of said diverting tracks when said diverter is activated into a diverting state; and a controller adapted to activate into the diverting state, at least occasionally, at least two diverters from said plurality of diverters such that an article to be diverted on the conveying surface is initially diverted with a partial rotational motion and subsequently diverted without further rotational motion.
- 13. The diverting assembly of claim 12 wherein said controller is further adapted to activate, at least occasionally, only a single one of said diverters into the diverting state when an article is to be diverted.
- 14. The diverting assembly of claim 13 wherein said controller is further adapted to activate into the diverting state, at least occasionally, at least two diverters from said plurality of diverters such that an article to be diverted on the conveying surface is initially diverted without a rotational force.
- 15. The diverting assembly of claim 14 wherein said controller determines how to divert an article to be diverted based upon a length of the article to be diverted.
- 16. The diverting assembly of claim 12 wherein said plurality of diverting tracks includes at least four diverting tracks.
- 17. The diverting assembly of claim 16 wherein said at least four diverting tracks are parallel to each other for a majority of their lengths.
- 18. A method of diverting articles from a conveying surface of a conveyor comprising:
providing a plurality of movable pushers associated with the conveying surface and adapted to be movable transversely across the conveying surface; providing a plurality of diverting tracks configured to guide selected ones of said movable pushers across the conveying surface; providing a plurality of diverters, each said diverter adapted to selectively divert at least one movable pusher along one of said diverting tracks when said diverter is activated into a diverting state; determining a length of an article to be diverted; activating at least two of said diverters into a diverting state at substantially the same time if the length of the article to be diverted is less than a first distance; and activating at least two of said diverters into a diverting state at different times if the length of the article to be diverted is greater than the first distance.
- 19. The method of claim 18 further including activating only a single one of said diverters into a diverting state if the length of the article to be diverted is greater than a second distance, said second distance being greater than said first distance.
- 20. The method of claim 18 wherein the activating of at least two diverters at different times comprises first activating a downstream diverter and subsequently activating a diverter that is upstream from the downstream diverter.
- 21. The method of claim 18 wherein said plurality of diverting tracks are oriented parallel to each other for a majority of their length.
- 22. The method of claim 18 wherein said plurality of diverting tracks merge together.
- 23. A conveyor sorter, comprising:
a conveying surface movable in a longitudinal direction; a plurality of diverting rails extending diagonally under said conveying surface; a plurality of pusher shoes capable of traveling across said conveying surface, said pusher shoes including article-contacting members extending at least partially above said conveying surface to divert articles on said conveying surface and follower members extending at least partially below said conveying surface to engage selected ones of said diverting rails to laterally displace articles on said conveying surface; a plurality of diverters associated with said diverting rails, each said diverter adapted to selectively transfer at least one of said follower members onto one of said diverting rails; wherein a plurality of said diverting rails have at least a first portion and a second portion, said first portion having a first angle with respect to said longitudinal direction and said second portion having a second angle with respect to said longitudinal direction that is different from said first angle.
- 24. The sorter in claim 23 wherein at least some of said plurality of diverting rails have a third portion downstream of said second portion, said third portion having a third angle with respect to said longitudinal direction that is different from said second angle.
- 25. The sorter in claim 23 wherein said first portion is adjacent the associated one of said diverters.
- 26. The sorter in claim 23 wherein said second portion is adjacent a terminal portion of said diverting rail.
- 27. The sorter of claim 24 wherein said third angle is the same as said first angle.
- 28. The sorter of claim 23 further including a take-away conveyor positioned adjacent to a downstream end of said plurality of diverting rails, said second portion of said plurality of diverting rails being substantially parallel to a longitudinal extent of said take-away conveyor.
- 29. The sorter of claim 23 further including a take-away conveyor positioned adjacent to a downstream end of said plurality of diverting rails, said third portion of said plurality of diverting rails being substantially parallel to a longitudinal extent of said take-away conveyor.
- 30. The sorter of claim 23 wherein said first angle is defined between said first portion and a side of said sorter adjacent to, and downstream from, said diverters, said second angle is defined between said second portion and said side of said sorter, and said first angle is greater than said second angle.
- 31. The sorter of claim 23 wherein said first angle is defined between said first portion and a side of said sorter adjacent to, and downstream from, said second angle is defined between said second portion and said side of said sorter, and said first angle is less than said second angle.
- 32. The sorter in claim 29 wherein at least some of said plurality of diverting rails have a third portion downstream of said second portion, said third portion having a third angle with respect to said longitudinal direction that is different from said second angle.
- 33. The sorter of claim 32 wherein said third angle is the same as said first angle.
- 34. The sorter of claim 23 wherein said plurality of diverting rails are parallel to each other.
- 35. The sorter of claim 32, wherein said third angle is defined between said third potion and said side, said third angle being greater than said second angle.
- 36. The sorter of claim 32 further including a take-away conveyor positioned adjacent to a downstream end of said plurality of diverting rails, said third portion of said plurality of diverting rails being substantially parallel to a longitudinal extent of said take-away conveyor.
- 37. The sorter of claim 23 further including a controller adapted to cause at least two of said diverters to substantially simultaneously transfer, at least two of said follower members onto at least two of said diverting rails.
- 38. A method of laterally displacing articles on a conveying surface traveling in a longitudinal direction;
providing a plurality of pusher shoes; selecting particular ones of said pusher shoes to laterally displace an article on said conveying surface; and laterally displacing said selected pusher shoes at a first lateral rate during an initial portion of travel of said selected pusher shoes across said conveying surface and at a second lateral rate during a subsequent portion of said travel, said first rate different from said second rate.
- 39. The method of claim 38 further including laterally displacing said selected pusher shoes at a third rate during a terminal portion of said travel, said third rate different from said second rate.
- 40. The method of claim 38 wherein said second lateral rate is less than said first lateral rate.
- 41. The method of claim 39 wherein said third lateral rate is greater than said second lateral rate.
- 42. The method of claim 39 wherein said first and third lateral rates are the same.
- 43. The method of claim 38 wherein said second lateral rate is greater than said first lateral rate.
- 44. The method of claim 43 further including transitioning the lateral speed of said selected pushers from said first lateral rate to said second lateral rate before said selected pushers are used to divert an article.
- 45. A conveyor sorter, comprising:
a conveying surface movable in a longitudinal direction, said conveying surface including a plurality of surface members extending across said conveying surface and being oriented generally transverse to said longitudinal direction; a plurality of diverting rails extending diagonally under said conveying surface; a plurality of pusher shoes capable of traveling across said conveying surface along said surface members, said pusher shoes including article-contacting members extending at least partially above said conveying surface to divert articles on said conveying surface and follower members extending at least partially below said conveying surface to engage selected ones of said diverting rails to laterally displace articles on said conveying surface; a plurality of diverters associated with said diverting rails, each said diverter adapted to be selectively activated into a diverting state in which said diverter transfers at least one of said follower members onto one of said diverting rails; a controller adapted to select at least one of said diverters to be activated into said diverting state, said controller adapted to select said at least one diverter based upon the location of an article's axis of rotation on said conveying surface.
- 46. The sorter of claim 45 wherein said controller selects said at least one diverter such that the article to be diverted is impacted by one or more or said pusher shoes in locations on the article that are upstream of said axis of rotation and downstream of said axis of rotation.
