Claims
- 1. A variable-ratio gear assembly comprising:
- torque input means;
- torque output means;
- at least two intercoupled independently-variable coplanar reverted gear train loops coupled to the torque input means and the torque output means, each said loop comprising a torque input member, a torque output member and a reactive member; and
- a clutch coupled to the coplanar reverted gear train loops for independently switching at least two of the members from coupling to one of a rotational reference, the torque input means and the torque output means to coupling to another of the rotational reference, the torque input means and the torque output means for varying a velocity ratio of the coplanar reverted gear train loops.
- 2. The variable-ratio gear assembly according to claim 1, wherein the clutch comprises a binary clutch coupled to at least one of the coplanar reverted gear train loops, the binary clutch including a first clutch member coupled to the rotational reference, a second clutch member coupled to one of the respective torque input member and torque output member, and an interactive member coupled to the respective reactive member and disposed between the clutch members, the interactive member being operable between a first position coupling the respective reactive member to the first clutch member and a second position coupling the respective reactive member to the second clutch member.
- 3. The variable-ratio gear assembly according to claim 1, wherein the clutch comprises a band clutch and an overrunning clutch coupled to at least one of the coplanar reverted gear train loops, the band clutch being connected to the rotational reference and disposed around one of the respective torque input member, torque output member and reactive member for arresting rotation thereof when the band clutch is applied to the respective one member, the overrunning clutch being coupled to the respective coplanar reverted gear train loop for arresting relative rotation between two of the respective torque input member, torque output member and reactive member when the band clutch is not so applied.
- 4. The variable-ratio gear assembly according to claim 1, wherein the torque input member and the torque output member of a first of the coplanar reverted gear train loops are respectively coupled to the torque input means and the torque output means, the reactive member of the first loop is coupled to the torque input member of the second loop, and the reactive member and the torque output member of the second loop are coupled to the clutch for independently switching each said second loop reactive and torque output members from coupling to one of the rotational reference, the torque input means and the torque output means to coupling to another of the rotational reference, the torque input means and the torque output means.
- 5. The variable-ratio gear assembly according to claim 1, wherein the torque input member of a first of the coplanar reverted gear train loops and the torque input member of a second of the coplanar reverted gear train loops is coupled to the torque input means, the torque output member of the first coplanar reverted gear train loop is coupled to the torque output means, the torque output member of the second coplanar reverted gear train loop is coupled to first clutch means for selectively impeding rotation thereof, and the reactive member of the first and second loop are coupled to second clutch means for independently switching each the reactive members from coupling to one of the rotational reference, the torque input means and the torque output means to coupling to another of the rotational reference, the torque input means and the torque output means.
- 6. The variable-ratio gear assembly according to claim 1, wherein the torque input member of a first of the coplanar reverted gear train loops is coupled to the torque input means, the torque output member of a second of the coplanar reverted gear train loops is coupled to the torque output means, the torque output member of the first loop is connected to the torque input member of the second loop, and the reactive members of the first and second assemblies are coupled to the clutch.
- 7. The variable-ratio gear assembly according to claim 1, wherein the clutch is coupled to at least one of the reactive members for independently switching said one reactive member from coupling to one of the rotational reference and the torque input means to coupling to another of the rotational reference and the torque input means.
- 8. The variable-ratio gear assembly according to claim 1, wherein the clutch is coupled to at least one of the reactive members for independently switching said one reactive member from coupling to one of the rotational reference and the torque output means to coupling to another of the rotational reference and the torque output means.
- 9. The variable-ratio gear assembly according to claim 1, wherein the clutch is coupled to at least one of the reactive members for independently coupling said one reactive member to any of the rotational reference, the torque input means and the torque output means.
- 10. A variable-ratio coplanar gear assembly comprising:
- a coplanar reverted gear train loop including a primary torque input member, a primary torque output member, a primary torque reactive member, and an auxiliary torque member, the auxiliary torque member being one of a secondary torque input member, a secondary torque output member and a secondary reactive member; and
- a clutch coupled to the coplanar reverted gear train loop for switching the primary reactive member between coupling to one of a rotational reference, the primary torque input member and the primary torque output member to coupling to another of the rotational reference, the primary torque input member and the primary torque output member for varying a velocity ratio of the coplanar gear assembly.
- 11. The variable-ratio coplanar gear assembly according to claim 10, wherein the coplanar reverted gear train loop comprises a pinion gear, a pair of independent annular gears disposed around the pinion gear and being coaxial thereto, and a cluster gear member comprising a ring gear having an inner surface engaging the pinion gear and a pair of outer surfaces each engaging a respective one of the annular gears, the cluster gear member further comprising an eccentric guide for disposing the ring gear coplanar to and eccentrically with respect to the pinion gear and the annular gears, the pinion gear, the cluster gear member and one of the annular gears comprising the primary torque members and the other of the annular gears comprising the auxiliary torque member.
- 12. The variable-ratio coplanar gear assembly according to claim 10, wherein the coplanar reverted gear train loop comprises a pair of independent pinion gears, an annular gear disposed around the pinion gears and being coaxial thereto, and a cluster gear member comprising a ring gear having a pair of inner surfaces each engaging a respective one of the pinion gears and an outer surface engaging the annular gear, the cluster gear member further comprising an eccentric guide for disposing the ring gear coplanar to and eccentrically with respect to the pinion gears and the annular gear, the annular gear, the cluster gear member and one of the pinion gears comprising the primary torque members and the other of the pinion gears comprising the auxiliary torque member.
- 13. A variable-ratio gear assembly comprising:
- torque input means;
- torque output means;
- at least two independently-variable coplanar reverted gear train loops, a first of the coplanar reverted gear train loops comprising a first torque input member, a first torque output member and a first reactive member, a second of the coplanar reverted gear train loops comprising a second torque input member, a second torque output member and a second reactive member, the first torque input member being coupled to the torque input means, the first torque output member being coupled to the torque output means, and the first reactive member being coupled to the second torque input member; and
- a clutch coupled to the second coplanar reverted gear train loop for selectively switching at least one of the second reactive member and the second torque output member from coupling to one of a rotational reference, the torque input means and the torque output means to coupling to another of the rotational reference, the torque input means and the torque output means for varying a velocity ratio of the coplanar reverted gear train loops.
- 14. The variable-ratio gear assembly according to claim 13, wherein the clutch comprises first clutch means coupled to the second reactive member for switching the second reactive member from coupling to one of the rotational reference and the torque input means to another of the rotational reference and the torque input means, and second clutch means coupled to the second output member for switching the second reactive member from coupling to one of the rotational reference and the torque output means to another of the rotational reference and the torque output means.
- 15. The variable-ratio gear assembly according to claim 13, wherein the clutch comprises first clutch means coupled to the second reactive member and second clutch means coupled to the second output member for switching each said second reactive member and said second output member from coupling to one of the rotational reference and the torque input means to coupling to another of the rotational reference and the torque input means.
- 16. The variable-ratio gear assembly according to claim 13, wherein the clutch comprises first clutch means coupled to the second reactive member and second clutch means coupled to the second output member for switching each said second reactive member and said second output member from coupling to one of the rotational reference and the torque output means to coupling to another of the rotational reference and the torque output means.
- 17. The variable-ratio gear assembly according to claim 13, wherein the clutch comprises first clutch means coupled to the second reactive member for coupling the second reactive member to any of the rotational reference, the torque input means and the torque output means, and second clutch means coupled to the second output member for switching the second out put member from coupling to one of the rotational reference and the torque input means to coupling to another of the rotational reference and the torque input means.
- 18. The variable-ratio gear assembly according to claim 13, wherein the clutch comprises first clutch means coupled to the second reactive member for coupling the second reactive member to any of the rotational reference, the torque input means and the torque output means, and second clutch means coupled to the second output member for switching the second output member from coupling to one of the rotational reference and the torque output means to coupling to another of the rotational reference and the torque output means.
- 19. The variable-ratio gear assembly according to claim 13, wherein the second torque output member is fixed to the rotational reference, and the clutch is coupled to the second reactive member for independently coupling the second reactive member to any of the rotational reference, the torque input means and the torque output means.
