Claims
- 1. A substantially gel-free resinous copolymer of:
- I. an ethylenically unsaturated addition-polymerizable polyester having an average of from one to two double bonds in each molecule, of
- 1. an ethylenically unsaturated addition-polymerizable carboxylic acid,
- 2. a saturated or aromatic polycarboxylic acid having no polymerizable double bonds, and
- 3. a polyol and
- Ii. at least one vinyl monomer, and comprising an alkyl ester of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid, the weight ratio of I:II being between 0.5:99.5 and 40:60.
- 2. The polymer of claim 1 in which the average polyester molecule has one double bond and the vinyl monomer comprises one or more of an acid having acrylic unsaturation, a nitrile, an amide, a hydroxy amide or an alkoxy amide derivative of said acid.
- 3. A copolymer of:
- I. an addition-polymerizable polyester having an average of from one to two olefinic double bonds in each molecule and being the condensation product of:
- A. 1. an ethylenically unsaturated addition-polymerizable polycarboxylic acid,
- 2. a saturated or aromatic polycarboxylic acid having no polymerizable double bonds, and
- 3. a polyol or
- B. 1. an ethylenically unsaturated addition-polymerizable (a) monohydric alcohol, (b) half ester of a saturated alcohol and a dibasic unsaturated acid, or (c) polyol
- 2. a saturated or aromatic polycarboxylic acid having no polymerizable double bonds,
- 3. a polyol, and
- 4. optionally, an ethylenically unsaturated addition-polymerizable polycarboxylic acid, and
- Ii. a vinyl monomer having less than about 20 carbon atoms.
- 4. An aqueous dispersion of the polymer of claim 1.
- 5. A nonaqueous dispersion of the polymer of claim 1.
- 6. A solution of the polymer of claim 1.
- 7. The polymer of claim 1 in which the polyester is (I) (A) and the molar ratio of 1):2):3) is 1 to 2:1 to 3:1 to 4.
- 8. The polymer of claim 7 in which the ratio is 1:2:3, the polyol is a diol, and the acids are dicarboxylic.
- 9. An article of manufacture containing the polymer of claim 1.
- 10. The article of claim 9 in which a flocking material is bonded to substrate by the polymer.
