Claims
- 1. A heat sealable film comprising a film of thermoplastic material, a layer on at least one face of the film consisting of a copolymer of propylene and but- 1-ene formed in the presence of a catalytic system consisting of a compound selected from the group consisting of untreated titanium trichloride and titanium trichloride treated with an electron donor and one or more organo-metallic compounds of metal of the group II and III of the periodic table of elements, while maintaining the ratio between the amounts of propylene and but-1-ene substantially constant throughout the polymerization, the copolymer containing 10-40% by weight derived from but-1-ene, said copolymer being characterized in that the ratio PRE of isolated ethyl branches with respect to the total of the ethyl branches of the copolymer is at least equal to the square of the proportion of units P derived from propylene in said copolymer, and films being characterised by a seal threshold of less than 125.degree. C. and a hot seal strength range of at least 25.degree. C.
- 2. A heat sealable film as claimed in claim 1 in which the fusion enthalpy of the copolymers, measured after heat treatment of the copolymers, is not more than 15 cal/g.
- 3. A heat sealable film as claimed in claim 1, in which the fusion enthalpy of the copolymers is within the range of 5-12 cal/g.
- 4. A heat sealable film as claimed in claim 1, in which the film of thermoplastic material is a film of isotactic propylene.
- 5. A heat sealable film as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that the film of thermoplastic material is from 5 microns to 1 mm in thickness, and that the thickess of the copolymer layer is from 0.1 to 10 microns.
- 6. A heat sealable film as claimed in claim 5, in which the film of thermoplastic has a thickness within the range of 10-100 microns and the thickness of the layer is 0.5-5 microns.
- 7. Heat sealable films as claimed in claim 1, in which the hot seal strength range is 25.degree.-55.degree. C.
