Claims
- 1. A copolymer having a low solution viscosity of less than 2000 mPa.cndot.s in 50% strength solution which is prepared by a bulk copolymerization process wherein a first component (A) is charged initially, and at least two olefinically unsaturated copolymerizable monomers (B) are added and polymerized, at least one of which contains at least one functional group which remains after the polymerization, and at least one of which is sterically hindered, wherein the compound (A) contains a functional group that reacts with the functional group in (B) to form a chemical bond,
- and wherein the copolymer is modified by reaction with one or more isocyanate compounds that contain from 0.8 to 1.5 free NCO groups per molecule.
- 2. A copolymer as claimed in claim 1, comprising
- (A) from 5 to 50% by weight of the copolymer of one or more glycidyl esters of aliphatic, saturated monocarboxylic acids containing a tertiary or quaternary .alpha. carbon atom, and
- (B) from 95 to 50% by weight of the copolymer of at least two olefinically unsaturated, copolymerizable monomers, of which at least one contains at least one COOH group and at least one is sterically-hindered.
- 3. A copolymer as claimed in claim 1, wherein the sterically-hindered monomers are olefinically-unsaturated compounds having a branched carbon chain and/or a cyclic structure.
- 4. A copolymer as claimed in claim 2, wherein the olefinically unsaturated monomers B include the monomers,
- (B1) one or more olefinically unsaturated monomers having at least one COOH group, and
- (B2) one or more olefinically-unsaturated, sterically-hindered monomers,
- and optionally one or more of components (B3) to (B5), wherein
- (B3) one or more hydroxyalkyl esters of .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated carboxylic acids,
- (B4) one or more esters of an .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated carboxylic acid with a monohydric aliphatic alcohol of 1 to 20 carbon atoms, and
- (B5) one or more olefinically-unsaturated compounds which are not included in (B1), (B2), (B3), or (B4).
- 5. A copolymer as claimed in claim 1, wherein the sterically-hindered monomers comprise esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid with branched or cyclic aliphatic alcohols.
- 6. A copolymer as claimed in claim 1, which has an OH number of from 40 to 250 mg of KOH/g, a number-average molar mass of less than 5000 g/mol, and a solution viscosity of from 10 to 2000 mPa.cndot.s (measured in 50% strength solution at 23.degree. C.).
- 7. A copolymer as claimed in claim 1, which has a glass transition temperature above 20.degree. C. at a heat-up rate of 10 K/min.
- 8. A copolymer as claimed in claim 1, which has an acid number of at least 2 mg of KOH/g.
- 9. A copolymer as claimed in claim 1, which is produced by a process comprising the steps of
- (a) charging component (A) to a vessel, and
- (b) adding component (B) and a free-radical initiator
- which polymerizes and reacts with (A) to form the copolymer.
- 10. A copolymer as claimed in claim 9, wherein the polymerization is carried out in the presence of no more than 20% by weight of solvent based on the total weight of the starting materials.
- 11. A copolymer as claimed in claim 9, wherein the process is carried out in the absence of solvents.
- 12. A copolymer as claimed in claim 9, wherein the polymerization is conducted at from 100.degree. to 210.degree. C.
- 13. A copolymer as claimed in claim 9, wherein the initiator comprises a dialkyl peroxide.
- 14. A coating composition as claimed in claim 1, which is an intermediate coating or a pigmented or unpigmented topcoat.
- 15. A powder coating composition comprising a copolymer as claimed in claim 1.
- 16. A coating composition comprising a copolymer having a low solution viscosity of less than 2000 mPa.cndot.s in 50% strength solution which is prepared by a bulk copolymerization process wherein a first component (A) is charged initially, and at least two olefinically unsaturated copolymerizable monomers (B) are added and polymerized, at least one of which contains at least one functional group which remains after the polymerization, and at least one of which is sterically hindered, wherein the compound (A) contains a functional group that reacts with the functional group in (B) to form a chemical bond, wherein the copolymer is modified by reaction with one or more isocyanate compounds that contains from 0.8 to 1.5 free NCO groups per molecule, and wherein the copolymer acts as a binder and is cured by crosslinking with one or more polyisocyanate.
- 17. A substrate coated with a coating composition as claimed in claim 16.
- 18. A copolymer as claimed in claim 1, which is cured.
- 19. A copolymer as claimed in claim 18, which is cured by an amino resin, a phenolic resin, a polyisocyanate, or a compound which contains one or more anhydride group.
- 20. A copolymer as claimed in claim 19, wherein the copolymer is cured by the reaction of a polyisocyanate with hydroxy groups of the copolymer.
