Claims
- 1. A process for producing a cordierite honeycomb structure, comprising the steps of:
- mixing powders of at least kaolin, talc, and alumina together so as to provide a chemical composition of cordierite;
- extruding the mixture; and
- firing the extrudate,
- wherein the kaolin has an average particle diameter of not more than 5 .mu.m and such a particle size distribution that the proportion of particles with diameters of less than 1 .mu.m is not more than 10% by weight, and
- wherein the talc has an average particle diameter of not more than 10 .mu.m and such a particle size distribution that the proportion of particles with diameters of less than 1 .mu.m is not more than 5% by weight.
- 2. The process according to claim 1, wherein the proportion of particles with diameters of less than 1 .mu.m in the kaolin is 1 to 10% by weight and the proportion of particles with diameters of less than 1 .mu.m in the talc is 0.5 to 5% by weight.
- 3. A process for producing a cordierite honeycomb structure, comprising the steps of:
- mixing powders of at least kaolin, talc, and alumina together so as to provide a chemical composition of cordierite;
- extruding the mixture; and
- firing the extrudate,
- wherein said step of extruding the mixture is carried out through a die having a groove for forming a honeycomb structure and wherein a ratio of the maximum particle diameter (R) of the raw material powder to the groove width (M) of the extrusion die, R/M, is not more than 1/3.
