Claims
- 1. An apparatus for the preparation of core sand mixtures comprising:
- (a) a first supporting structure;
- (b) means defining a mixing chamber for receiving measured quantities of sand and a liquid binder system components mounted on the first supporting structure;
- (c) binder system components metering means which includes,
- (i) means defining a volume for holding liquid component presenting an upper surface, and
- (ii) means for continuously sensing the position of the liquid component surface at infinite locations along a vertical axis within the volume defining means;
- (d) component flow means connecting the component metering means to the mixing chamber;
- (e) a second supporting structure positioned on the first supporting structure means;
- (f) load cells disposed between the first and second supporting structures and bearing the weight of the second supporting structure;
- (g) means for holding a quantity of sand mounted on the second supporting structure means; sand flow means connecting the sand holding means to the mixing chamber; and
- (h) programmable control means operably connected to the binder system component liquid surface sensing means and to the load cells to provide for accurately metered amounts of sand and binder system components to be introduced into the mixing chamber.
- 2. The apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein:
- (a) first supporting structure includes:
- (i) a substantially horizontally disposed frame plate having openings extending between upper and lower sides thereof for the passage of sand and binder system components into the mixing chamber, and
- (ii) a sealing ring formed on the lower side of the frame plate which encloses the sand and liquid component passages,
- (b) the mixing chamber defining means is a bowl having a rim configured for sealing engagement with the frame plate sealing ring.
- 3. The apparatus as defined in claim 2 wherein the mixing bowl is mounted on the first supporting structure for movement into and from engagement with the frame plate sealing ring.
- 4. The apparatus as defined in claim 2 or 3 wherein the mixing bowl comprises annular means defining a bottom opening and annular closure means for sealing the bottom opening during mixing operations.
- 5. The apparatus as defined in claim 4 wherein the annular means defining the bottom opening and the annular closure means are formed with cooperating sloping surfaces that are self cleaning when the closure means is inserted into the opening forming means.
- 6. An apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein the sand flow means comprises sand flow rate regulating means and wherein the sand flow regulating means is operably connected to the programmable control means.
- 7. An apparatus as defined in claim 6 wherein the sand flow regulating means comprises a two stage shut off valve.
- 8. An apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein the binder system component metering means comprises:
- (a) a hollow vertical vessel of substantially greater length than width to contain liquid components,
- (b) pulsed energy transmitting and receiving means mounted on the vertical vessel to continuously sense the position of the liquid surface; and
- (c) means operably connecting the pulsed energy means to the programmable controller means.
- 9. An apparatus as defined in claim 8 wherein the pulsed energy transmitting and receiving means comprises an ultrasonic transducer.
- 10. An apparatus as defined in claim 8 which comprises a source of pressurized gas connected to the interior of the hollow vertical vessel to eject binder system components from the vessel when desired.
- 11. An apparatus for the preparation of core sand mixtures comprising:
- (a) a first supporting structure having a frame plate defining its upper end, the frame plate including upper and lower surfaces;
- (b) a second supporting structure positioned atop the frame plate;
- (c) load cells disposed between the first and second supporting structures and bearing the weight of the second supporting structure;
- (d) a source of binder system components having volume limit sensor;
- (e) binder system component metering means connected to the source of liquid component, the metering means including,
- (i) a hollow, elongate vessel for holding the binder system component presenting an upper surface, and
- (ii) pulsed energy transmitting and receiving means mounted on the upper end of the elongate vessel to continuously determine the elevation of the liquid surface;
- (f) a source of sand mounted on the second supporting means;
- (g) a mixing vessel defining a mixing chamber supported by the first supporting structure for sealing engagement with the lower surface of the frame plate;
- (h) means connecting the sand source and the liquid binder system component metering means to the mixing chamber for the introduction of sand and binder system components thereinto;
- (i) a source of pressurized gas connected to elongate measuring vessel to eject liquid components therefrom when desired; and
- (j) a programmable controller operably connected to the load cells, the liquid component source, the liquid component metering vessel and to the source of pressurized gas to measure and integrate preparation of a core sand mixture.
- 12. An apparatus as defined in claim 11 wherein the elongate vessel is a vertically dropped elongate body is a tube and the pulsed energy transmitting and recovery means is an ultrasonic transducer.
- 13. An apparatus as defined in claim 11 wherein the pressurized gas is air.
