Claims
- 1. A dissector assembly for forming a generally circumcorneal interlamellar annular channel in the cornea of an eye comprising:
- a dissector having a cross-section, which dissector is in the form of a major arc having a diameter in a plane about an axis, said axis being perpendicular to the plane of the major arc of the dissector, having a single dissecting end so to separate layers of stroma within the cornea and to form an intralamellar channel within the corneal stroma of an eye and having a support end, and
- a dissector support attached to the dissector support end in which the dissector support is at an angle of up to about 80.degree. to the plane of the dissector.
- 2. The dissector assembly of claim 1 in which the dissector support is at an angle between 10.degree. and 50.degree..
- 3. The dissector assembly of claim 2 in which the blade support is at an angle of 34.degree. (.+-.5.degree.).
- 4. The blade assembly of claim 1 in which the blade cross-section is hexagonal, said hexagonal blade cross-section having two opposing sides which are longer than the remaining four sides.
- 5. The dissector assembly of claim 4 in which the cross-section is positioned such that it forms a cone angle of 112.degree. (.+-.30.degree.).
- 6. The dissector assembly of claim 1 additionally comprising a generally cylindrical dissector barrel having an axis substantially coincident to the dissector axis, said barrel connected to the dissector support and having an inside diameter and an outside diameter.
- 7. The dissector assembly of claim 6 in which the diameter of the arc of the dissector is less than the inside diameter of the dissector barrel.
- 8. The dissector assembly of claim 7 in which substantially all of the dissector may be seen in the viewing end of the dissector barrel.
- 9. The dissector assembly of claim 6 in which the diameter of the arc of the dissector is less than the inside diameter of the dissector barrel.
- 10. The dissector assembly of claim 6 in which the ratio of the length of the barrel along its axis to the diameter of the arc of the dissector is between about 0.25:1 and 15:1.
- 11. The dissector assembly of claim 10 in which the ratio is between 0.4:1 and 1:1.
- 12. The dissector assembly of claim 10 in which the ratio is at least about 1:1 and less than about 3:1.
- 13. The dissector assembly of claim 10 in which the ratio is at least about 3:1 but less than about 15:1.
- 14. The dissector assembly of claim 1 in which the dissector dissecting end is rounded.
- 15. The stromal separator assembly of claim 1 in which the stromal separator cross-section is rectangular,
- 16. The stromal separator assembly of claim 15 in which the cross-section is positioned such that it forms a cone angle of 112.degree. (.+-.30.degree.).
- 17. A dissector assembly for forming a generally circumcorneal interlamellar annular channel in the cornea of an eye comprising:
- a dissector having a cross-section, which dissector is in the form of a major arc in a plane about an axis, said axis being perpendicular to the plane of the major arc of the dissector, having a single dissecting blunt end within the plane of the dissector so to separate layers of stroma within the cornea and to form an intralamellar channel within the corneal stroma of an eye and having a support end,
- a dissector support attached at one end to the dissector support end of the dissector and at the other end to a dissector barrel having an axis substantially coincident to the dissector axis, and
- a generally cylindrical dissector barrel having a dissector support end, a view end, an inside diameter, an outside diameter, and an axis substantially coincident to the dissector axis.
- 18. The dissector assembly of claim 17 in which the dissector support is at an angle of up to about 90.degree. to the plane of the dissector.
- 19. The dissector assembly of claim 18 in which the dissector support is at an angle between 10.degree. and 80.degree..
- 20. The dissector assembly of claim 19 in which the dissector support is at an angle of about 34.degree. (.+-.5).
- 21. The stromal separator assembly of claim 16 in which the stromal separator cross-section is hexagonal, said hexagonal stromal separator cross-section having two opposing sides which are longer than the four remaining sides.
- 22. The dissector assembly of claim 17 in which the cross-section is positioned such that it forms a cone angle of 112.degree. (.+-.30.degree.).
- 23. The dissector assembly of claim 16 in which the diameter of the arc of the dissector is less than the inside diameter of the dissector barrel.
- 24. The dissector assembly of claim 23 in which substantially all of the dissector may be seen in the viewing end of the dissector barrel.
- 25. The dissector assembly of claim 17 in which the ratio of the length of the dissector barrel along its axis to the diameter of the arc of the dissector is between about 0.25:1 and 15:1.
- 26. The dissector assembly of claim 25 in which the ratio is between 0.4:1 and 1:1.
- 27. The dissector assembly of claim 25 in which the ratio is at least about 1:1 and less than about 3:1.
- 28. The dissector assembly of claim 25 in which the ratio is at least about 3:1 but less than about 15:1.
- 29. The dissector assembly of claim 17 in which the dissector dissecting end is rounded.
- 30. The stromal separator assembly of claim 17 in which the stromal separator cross-section is rectangular.
- 31. The stromal separator assembly of claim 30 in which the cross-section is positioned such that it forms a cone angle of 112.degree. (a.+-.30.degree.).
