The present device relates to trim moldings for the construction industry and specifically relates to trim molding around door and window openings and around the base of walls.
The present device will now be described by way of example only with reference to the following drawings in which:
The present device a corner trim shown generally as 110 in
Corner trim 110 includes vertical leg 112 having a vertical outer edge 114, a vertical internal edge 116 and a horizontal stop edge 118. Corner trim 110 further includes a horizontal leg 120 including a horizontal outer edge 122, a horizontal inner edge 124 and a vertical stop edge 126. Horizontal leg 120 and vertical leg 112 meet at inner apex 130 and outer apex 128.

Corner trim 310 further includes a horizontal leg 320 having a horizontal outer edge 322 and horizontal inner edge 324 and a vertical stop edge 326. Horizontal leg 320 further includes a horizontal extension portion 340, having a horizontal extension inner edge 342, a horizontal extension outer edge 346, and a horizontal extension stop edge 344.
Vertical leg 312 further includes a vertical extension portion 350 having a vertical extension inner edge 354, a vertical extension outer edge 356, and a vertical extension stop edge 358.
Vertical leg 312 together with vertical extension portion 350, intersect with horizontal leg 320 which includes horizontal extension portion 340 at lower inner apex 330, lower outer apex 328, upper outer apex 348 and upper inner apex 352.
In operation, the method of the present invention may be described as follows. The method of the present invention is for forming a trim molding around a window or door opening defined by a lintel 195 and opposite jambs 197, 199. The opening has left and right upper corners 201, 203. At least two L-shaped corner trim pieces are provided such as a left-side corner trim piece 110 and a right-side corner trim piece 111. Vertical casings 192, 193 and a horizontal casing 190 are also provided. The corner trim piece 110 has a vertical leg 112 and a horizontal leg 120. The vertical leg 112 has a first mitered or sloping end surface. The horizontal leg 120 has a second mitered or sloping end surface attached to the first mitered end surface of the vertical leg 112 to form the L-shaped square corner trim piece 110. The vertical leg has a vertical outer edge 114 and a vertical inner edge 116.
The horizontal leg 120 has a horizontal outer edge 122 and a horizontal inner edge 124. The vertical leg 112 and the horizontal leg 120 have a first width (W1) and a first thickness (T1). The vertical casings 192, 193 and the horizontal casing 190 have a second width (W2) and second thickness (T2). The first width (W1) is wider than the second width (W2). The first thickness (T1) is thicker than the second thickness (T2). The vertical casings 192, 193, the horizontal casing 190, and the corner trim pieces 110, 111 define the window or door opening therebetween, as best seen
An outer abutment end of the vertical casing 192 is placed in direct abutment contact with an outer end 118 of the vertical leg 112. The vertical casing 192 may be shifted away from the vertical inner edge 116 and the vertical casing 192 is centered relative to the vertical leg 112. Similarly, the horizontal inner edge 124 of the horizontal leg 120 may be placed about ⅛ inch or any other suitable distance away from the inner edge of the lintel 195. Preferably, an outer abutment end of the horizontal casing 190 is placed in direct abutment contact with an outer end 126 of the horizontal leg 120. The horizontal casing 190 may be shifted away from the horizontal inner edge 124. The horizontal casing 190 may then be centered relative to the horizontal leg 120.
In another aspect of the present invention the corner trim pieces 110, 111 are provided with a first profile 205 and the vertical casing 192 and the horizontal casing 190 are provided with a second profile 207, 209, respectively, as best shown in
While the present invention has been described in accordance with preferred compositions and embodiments, it is to be understood that certain substitutions and alterations may be made thereto without departing from the spirit and scope of the following claims.
The application claims priority from previously filed U.S. utility patent application Ser. No. 11/538,886 filed 5 Oct. 2006 that claims priority from U.S. provisional patent application No. 60/596,876, titled “CORNER TRIM” filed on Oct. 27, 2005 by Ed Vaes.
