Benefit is claimed to German Patent Application No. 102020113832.6, filed May 22, 2020; the contents of which are incorporated by reference herein in their entirety.
The present corrective lens comprises a carrier, a tuning element and an actuator. The corrective lens may be a contact lens which is arranged to be placed directly on the surface of the eyes. The corrective lens may be an intraocular lens, which is arranged to be implanted in the eye for example as part of a treatment for cataracts or myopia. Corrective lenses are ocular prosthetic devices which are arranged to correct vision for cosmetic or therapeutic reasons.
Provided herein is a corrective lens that includes a carrier, a tuning element and an actuator. The carrier is transparent for visible light. In particular, the carrier comprises silicone and/or fluorocarbon. For example, the carrier has essentially the shape of a spherical segment, in particular the shape of a corrective lens. The carrier has a first main surface, wherein the first main surface is curved in two directions which two directions extend orthogonally with respect to each other. In particular, the first main surface of the carrier is concavely curved.
The carrier may have a transparent central region and an edge region, wherein the edge region surrounds the central region. The central region can be provided so that a user can see through it. The carrier may comprise an opening in the central region, wherein the tuning element is arranged to be at least partially inserted into said opening. The edge region may comprise opaque material. In particular, the edge region may comprise electronic components in the edge region.
The tuning element may be arranged to interact with visible light by means of refraction or diffraction. The interaction with visible light of the tuning element may be controlled and altered in operation of the tuning element. In particular, the tuning element is a tunable lens, a tunable grating or a tunable mirror. The tuning element comprises a first flexible membrane.
The first flexible membrane may have a contact area which is extensively connected to the first main surface of the carrier. Here and in the following “extensively connected” describes a connection having a continuous contact area. In particular, said contact area continuously extends over a major part of the first main surface in the central region. In the contact area the first membrane rests against the first main surface and takes on the shape of the first main surface. In particular, the difference between the refractive index of the carrier and the refractive index of the first membrane is less than 0.2, preferably less than 0.1, highly preferred less than 0.05.
The actuator is arranged to control the tuning element. In particular, the actuator moves components of the tuning element with respect to the carrier, whereby the interaction of the tuning element with visible light is controlled. The actuator is arranged to alter the optical power of the tuning element. The actuator comprises a displacement unit which is arranged to exert a first force onto the tuning element. The displacement unit may comprise an electro permanent magnet. Alternatively, the displacement unit may comprise a piezo element. For example, the actuator comprises multiple displacement units, wherein each displacement unit is arranged to exert a first force onto the tuning element. The displacement units may be arranged in the edge region of the carrier. In particular, the displacement unit is attached to a circumferential portion of the carrier. According to one embodiment, the actuator comprises multiple displacement units, each having an electro permanent magnet, wherein the displacement units are arranged around the tuning element on the carrier.
The displacement unit comprises a at least one permanent magnet. In this context, a permanent magnet is an object made from a material that is magnetized and creates its own persistent magnetic field. In particular, the permanent magnet comprises a ferromagnetic material.
According to one embodiment, the corrective lens comprises the carrier, the tuning element and the actuator. The carrier has a first main surface, wherein the first main surface is curved in two directions which two directions extend orthogonally with respect to each other. The tuning element comprises the first flexible membrane. The first flexible membrane may have a contact area which is extensively connected to the first main surface. The actuator is arranged to alter the optical power of the tuning element, wherein the actuator comprises the displacement unit with an electro permanent magnet.
The corrective lens described is based, among other things, on the consideration that a fixed optical power limits the field of application of such a corrective lens. Thus, it is desired to be able to adapt the optical power in different situations to the needs of the user. Furthermore, it is desired, that the corrective lens is universally applicable to correct different ametropia. The present corrective lens advantageously overcomes said limitations by altering the optical power of the corrective lens by means of the tuning element.
According to one embodiment, the carrier comprises a second main surface on a side opposed to the first main surface. In particular, the second main surface is convexly curved. For example, the second main surface extends essentially parallel to the first main surface.
According to one embodiment the at least one vent extends from the first main surface to the second main surface through the carrier. The vent may be an opening which allows gas exchange, in particular oxygen exchange, between the side of the first main surface and the side of second main surface.
According to one embodiment, the tuning element comprises a cavity which is filled with a liquid. In particular, the liquid is transparent for visible light.
According to one embodiment the tuning element comprises a second flexible membrane and a shaper. The second flexible membrane may consist of the same material as the first flexible membrane. In particular, the first flexible membrane and the second flexible membrane may be fabricated in a one-piece manner. For example, the first and the second flexible membrane surround the cavity which is filled with the liquid completely on all sides. Alternatively, the cavity is limited by the first flexible membrane, the second flexible membrane and the shaper. In particular, the shaper may have a frame like geometry, wherein the first and the second membrane are fixedly attached to opposing sides of the shaper.
The actuator is arranged to adjust a position of the shaper with respect to the carrier. The second flexible membrane depends on the position of the shaper with respect to the carrier. In particular, a reduced distance between the shaper and the carrier results in an increased optical power and an increased distance between the shaper and the carrier results in a reduced optical power.
According to one embodiment, the actuator is arranged to apply a first force to the shaper in a first direction and a returning structure is arranged to apply a second force to the shaper in a second direction. The first direction and the second direction are in opposite directions. In particular, the first force is an adjustable magnetic force and the second force is a spring force. The returning structure may be fabricated in a one-piece manner with the shaper. In particular, the returning structure may be formed as a bending beam, which is fixedly attached to the carrier.
According to one embodiment, the displacement unit comprises a first permanent magnet, a second permanent magnet, a coil and two pole pieces. The coil is arranged to adjust the intensity and direction of the magnetization of the first permanent magnet. In particular, the first permanent magnet is surrounded by the coil, whereby the first permanent magnet is exposed to magnetic fields, which result from currents through the coil. In particular, also the second permanent magnet is arranged in the coil. For example, the first permanent magnet and the second permanent magnet may comprise materials having a different susceptibility. For example, the susceptibility of the first permanent magnet is larger than the susceptibility of the second permanent magnet. Thus, the exposure of the first and the second magnet to the same magnetic field results in different magnetizations of the first and the second permanent magnet.
In particular, the first and the second permanent magnet have each a main extension axis, wherein the main extension axis of the first permanent magnet extends parallel to the main extension axis of the second magnet. In a direction obliquely to the main extension axes, both magnets may be surrounded by the coil. In particular, the coil comprises a single winding.
The pole pieces are arranged on opposing sides of the of the first and second permanent magnet along their main extension axes. In particular, each pole piece covers the end of the south pole or the north pole of the first and the second permanent magnet. The pole pieces comprise a ferromagnetic material, in particular iron. The pole pieces are arranged, to conduct the magnetic field of the first and second permanent magnet. The pole pieces are arranged in close proximity to the shaper. In particular, the shaper comprises a material having a susceptibility not equal to zero. For example, the susceptibility of the material of the shaper is larger than 100, in particular larger than 200, preferably larger than 300.
By applying a current to the coil, the magnetization in the first and second permanent magnet may be altered, whereby the displacement unit may be altered into different states. In a first state, the magnetization of the first permanent magnet is anti-parallel to the magnetization of the second permanent magnet. Thus, the magnetization of the first permanent magnet counteracts the magnetization of the second permanent magnet. Hence, in the first state, the displacement unit does not affect a magnetic force onto the shaper. In a second state, the magnetization of the first permanent magnet is parallel to the magnetization of the second permanent magnet. Thus, the magnetization of the first permanent magnet and the second permanent magnet sum up. In the second state, the first and second permanent magnet, the pole pieces and at least a section of the shaper from a magnetic circuit, whereby a magnetic force exerts onto the shaper.
According to one embodiment, the first flexible membrane has a contact area which is extensively connected to the first main surface. In particular, the carrier comprises a circumferential portion and a central portion. The central portion is arranged in an opening extending completely through the circumferential portion. The central portion comprises the first main surface. In particular, when fabricating the corrective lens, the first membrane is attached to the first main surface of the central portion and afterwards the central portion is attached to the circumferential portion.

The second membrane rests against the stamping surface, whereby the second membrane and the first membrane are curved.
According to one embodiment, the carrier comprises a vent in the first main surface, wherein in method step b) a fluid between the first flexible membrane and the first main surface is removed through the vent. The vent may extend continuously from the first main surface to the second main surface The fluid may be gaseous, like air, or liquid, like oil, water of an adhesive.
