Claims
- 1. An environmentally-safe and biodegradable liquid composition for inhibiting the corrosion of ferrous metal surfaces in oil field applications consisting essentially of:
- (a) about 5-25% cyclohexylammonium benzoate;
- (b) about 8-50% of a non-toxic and non-carcinogenic alkali metal benzoate salt; and
- (c) about 35-80% water.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 which further comprises about 5-10% of a (C.sub.2 -C.sub.5) alkanol .
- 3. The composition of claim 2 wherein the (C.sub.2 -C.sub.5)alkanol is isopropanol.
- 4. The composition of claim 1 wherein the benzoate salt is sodium benzoate.
- 5. The composition of claim 1 which is prepared by a process comprising forming a solution of, by weight: (a) 2-15% cyclohexylamine; (b) 25-55% sodium benzoate; 5-10% of a (C.sub.2 -C.sub.5)alkanol; and (c) 35-50% water.
- 6. A method of protecting the threaded ends of ferrous metal tubular goods used in downhole oil field applications from corrosion comprising: (a) applying thereto a coating of the composition of claim 1, said coating not requiring removal prior to downhole placement of the tubular goods; and (b) evaporating the water to yield a coherent thin film of cyclohexylammonium benzoate and a benzoate salt on said ends which is effective to protect said ends from corrosion for an extended period of time.
- 7. The method of claim 6 further comprising (c) covering said coated, threaded ends with a closed end thread protector.
- 8. The method of claim 6 wherein the benzoate salt is sodium benzoate.
