Claims
- 1. A corrosion resistant, electrically conductive component comprising 20-55% Cr, balance base metal, said component having thereon a substantially external, continuous layer of chromium nitride.
- 2. A component in accordance with claim 1 wherein said base metal comprises a cladding on a substrate.
- 3. A component in accordance with claim 1 wherein said base metal comprises at least one of the group consisting of Ni, Fe, and Co.
- 4. A component in accordance with claim 1 further comprising at least one of the group consisting of 3-20% Co, 3-20% Cu, 3-20% Fe, 3-20% Mn, 3-20% Ni, and 3-20% Mo.
- 5. A component in accordance with claim 1 further comprising up to 1% of at least one of the group consisting of Hf, Zr, Y, La, and Ce.
- 6. A component in accordance with claim 1 further comprising up to 10% of at least one of the group consisting of Nb, Ti, V, and Zr.
- 7. A component in accordance with claim 1 wherein said chromium nitride comprises Cr2N.
- 8. A component in accordance with claim 1 wherein said continuous layer of chromium nitride is thermally formed.
- 9. A component in accordance with claim 1 wherein said component comprises a bipolar plate for an electrochemical device.
- 10. A component in accordance with claim 1 further comprising a composition selected from the group consisting of: 50% Cr, balance Ni; 42% Cr, 5% Mn, balance Ni; 42% Cr, 5% Mo, balance Ni; and 42% Cr, 10% Fe, balance Ni.
- 11. A component in accordance with claim 10 wherein said component comprises a bipolar plate for an electrochemical device.
- 13. A proton exchange membrane fuel cell comprising a corrosion resistant, electrically conductive bipolar plate, said bipolar plate comprising 20-55% Cr, balance base metal, said component having thereon a substantially external, continuous layer of chromium nitride.
- 14. A proton exchange membrane fuel cell in accordance with claim 13 wherein said base metal comprises a cladding on a substrate.
- 15. A proton exchange membrane fuel cell in accordance with claim 13 wherein said base metal comprises at least one of the group consisting of Ni, Fe, and Co.
- 16. A proton exchange membrane fuel cell in accordance with claim 13 wherein said bipolar plate further comprises at least one of the group consisting of 3-20% Co, 3-20% Cu, 3-20% Fe, 3-20% Mn, 3-20% Ni, and 3-20% Mo.
- 17. A proton exchange membrane fuel cell in accordance with claim 13 wherein said bipolar plate further comprises up to 1% of at least one of the group consisting of Hf, Zr, Y, La, and Ce.
- 18. A proton exchange membrane fuel cell in accordance with claim 13 wherein said bipolar plate further comprises up to 10% of at least one of the group consisting of Nb, Ti, V, and Zr.
- 19. A proton exchange membrane fuel cell in accordance with claim 13 wherein said chromium nitride comprises Cr2N.
- 20. A proton exchange membrane fuel cell in accordance with claim 13 wherein said continuous layer of chromium nitride is thermally formed.
- 21. A proton exchange membrane fuel cell in accordance with claim 13 wherein said bipolar plate further comprises a composition selected from the group consisting of: 50% Cr, balance Ni; 42% Cr, 5% Mn, balance Ni; 42% Cr, 5% Mo, balance Ni; and 42% Cr, 10% Fe, balance Ni.
