Claims
- 1. An improved apparatus for manufacturing corrugated cardboard including a single-facer, a double-backer, and a preheater including a motor, a motor controlled wrap arm coupled to the motor and a heating vessel, the improvement comprising:
- at least one moving web, said moving web contactable with the heating vessel;
- a temperature sensing device situated in close proximity to the preheater and detecting the temperature of the moving web as the web exits the preheater, said temperature sensing device producing a temperature signal in accordance with the temperature of the web;
- a web traversing apparatus having said temperature sensing device connected thereto, said web traversing apparatus moving said temperature sensing device in a direction crosswise to the direction of movement of said web to account for temperature variation across said web;
- a web measurement device positioned adjacent said web, said web measurement device being configured to provide a measurement signal corresponding to distance across said web, said web measurement device being further configured to detect at least one edge of said web to generate said measurement signal; and
- circuit means for positioning the motor controlled wrap arm in accordance with said temperature signal, said circuit means supplying control signals to the motor to move the motor controlled wrap arm and vary the surface area of the moving web contacting the preheater and maintain said temperature signal within a predetermined range.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said circuit means is a processor means having memory and input/output capability, said processor means including an input that receives said temperature signal and an output connected to the motor controlled wrap arm, said processor means storing in said memory a plurality of data signals corresponding to the amplitude of said temperature signal and averaging said plurality of data signals to produce an average temperature signal, said processor means supplying motor signals to the motor of said motorized wrap arm to maintain said temperature signal within said predetermined range.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein said temperature sensing device is an infrared sensitive temperature sensor that produces an analog output signal corresponding to the temperature of the web.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said web traversing apparatus moves said temperature sensing device to a plurality of locations across said web.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein said temperature sensing device produces a temperature signal corresponding to said plurality of locations across said web.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 3, which further includes a moisture sensor situated in close proximity to the temperature sensing device and detecting the moisture content of the moving web, said moisture sensor producing a moisture signal in accordance with the moisture content of the web.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein said moisture sensor is mounted to said web traversing apparatus, said web traversing apparatus moving said moisture sensor in a direction crosswise to the direction of movement of said web.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said circuit means is configured to respond to said measurement signal to provide a movement signal to said web traversing apparatus, and said web traversing apparatus is configured to respond, to said movement signal to control location of said temperature sensing device.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:
- a moisture sensor mounted to said web traversing device to determine moisture variation across said moving web;
- a steam manifold having multiple zones for varying the steam applied across said moving web; and
- wherein said circuit means is responsive to said moisture sensor to actuate said steam manifold to adjust moisture content of said moving web.
