Claims
- 1. A cosmetic composition for use in treatment of skin conditions selected from skin slackness, wrinkles, dry skin and insufficient sebum secretion, which comprises an effective amount of between about 0.001 .mu.g to about 10.0 .mu.g per gram of the composition of a compound of the formula: ##STR9## where X.sup.1 and X.sup.2 are each selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, acyl, alkylsilyl and alkoxyalkyl, where acyl is selected from the group consisting of an aliphatic acyl of 1 to 6 carbons and an aromatic acyl, and where R is selected from the group consisting of alkyl, hydrogen, hydroxyalkyl, fluoroalkyl and a side chain of the formula ##STR10## wherein R.sup.1 represents hydrogen, hydroxy or O-acyl, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are each selected from the group consisting of alkyl, hydroxyalkyl and fluoroalkyl, or, when taken together represent the group --(CH.sub.2).sub.m -- where m is an integer having a value of from 2 to 5, R.sup.4 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, hydroxy, fluorine, O-acyl, alkyl, hydroxyalkyl and fluoroalkyl, R.sup.5 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, fluorine, alkyl, hydroxyalkyl and fluoroalkyl, or, R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 taken together represent double-bonded oxygen or double-bonded carbon, R.sup.6 and R.sup.7 are each selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, hydroxy, O-acyl, fluorine and alkyl, or, R.sup.6 and R.sup.7 taken together form a carbon-carbon double bond or a carbon-carbon triple bond, and wherein n at the carbon 24 position in the side chain is an integer having a value of from 1 to 5 and wherein the carbon at any one of positions 20, 22, or 23 in the side chain may be replaced by an O, S, or N atom, and a suitable carrier.
- 2. A cosmetic composition according to claim 1 wherein the compound is 1.alpha.,25-dihydroxy-19-nor-vitamin D.sub.3.
- 3. A cosmetic composition according to claim 1 wherein the compound is 1.alpha.-hydroxy-19-nor-vitamin D.sub.3.
- 4. A cosmetic composition according to claim 1 wherein the compound is 1.alpha.,25-dihydroxy-19-nor-vitamin D.sub.2.
- 5. A cosmetic composition according to claim 1 wherein the compound is 1.alpha.-hydroxy-19-nor-vitamin D.sub.2.
- 6. A cosmetic composition according to claim 1 wherein the compound is 1.alpha.,25-dihydroxy-19-nor-24 epi-vitamin D.sub.2.
- 7. A cosmetic composition according to claim 1 wherein the compound is 1.alpha.-hydroxy-19-nor-24 epi-vitamin D.sub.2.
- 8. cosmetic composition according to claim 1, wherein the compound is present in the composition in an amount from about 0.001 .mu.g/gm to about 0.03 .mu.g/gm of the composition.
- 9. A cosmetic composition according to claim 1, wherein the compound is present in the composition in an amount from about 0.03 .mu.g/gm to about 1 .mu.g/gm of the composition.
- 10. A composition according to claim 1 which further comprises an effective amount of a compound capable of inducing epithelialization.
- 11. A composition according to claim 10, wherein the compound is Vitamin A and the effective amount is about 0.003-0.3% by weight based on the weight of the composition.
- 12. A composition according to claim 10, wherein the compound is a chromanol.
- 13. A composition according to claim 12, herein the chromanol is Vitamin E and the effective amount is about 0.1-10% by weight based on the weight of the composition.
- 14. A composition according to claim 1 which further comprises an effective amount of a .beta.-agonist.
- 15. A composition according to claim 14, wherein the agonist is isoproterenol and the amount is about 0.1-2% by weight based on the weight of the composition.
- 16. A composition according to claim 14, wherein the agonist is cyclic-AMP and the effective amount is about 0.1-1% by weight based on the weight of the composition.
- 17. A composition according to claim 1, which further comprises an effective amount of anti-inflammatory agent, wherein the anti-inflammatory agent is a corticosteroid, and wherein the corticosteroid is hydrocortisone or its acetate and the effective amount is about 0.25-5% by weight based on the weight of the composition.
- 18. A composition according to claim 1, which further comprises an effective amount of an anti-inflammatory agent, wherein the anti-inflammatory agent is a corticosteroid, and wherein the corticosteroid is dexamethasone and the effective amount is about 0.025-0.5% 0.5% by weight based on the weight of the composition.
- 19. A composition according to claim 1, which further comprises an effective amount of a keratoplastic agent, and wherein the keratoplastic agent is coal tar and the effective amount is about 0.1-20% by weight based on the weight of the composition.
- 20. A composition according to claim 1, which further comprises an effective amount of a keratoplastic agent, and wherein the keratoplastic agent is anthralin and the effective amount is about 0.05-2% by weight based on the weight of the composition.
- 21. A cream comprising a composition according to claim 1, wherein the suitable carrier comprises a mixture of water, self-emulsifying beeswax, mineral oil and almond oil.
- 22. A cream according to claim 21, wherein the mixture includes in the following proportions:
- water, about 40 parts;
- self-emulsifying beeswax, about 20 parts;
- mineral oil, about 39 parts; and
- almond oil, about 1 part.
- 23. An ointment comprising a composition according to claim 1, wherein the suitable carrier comprises a mixture of vegetable oil and white soft paraffin.
- 24. An ointment according to claim 23, wherein the vegetable oil is almond oil which is present in the amount of about 30% and the white soft paraffin is present in the amount of about 70%, both on the basis of weight.
- 25. A lotion comprising a composition according to claim 1, wherein the suitable carrier comprises propylene glycol.
- 26. A method for treating skin conditions selected from skin slackness, wrinkles, dry skin and insufficient sebum secretion which comprises topically applying to the skin a composition having an effective amount of a compound of the formula: ##STR11## where X.sup.1 and X.sup.2 are each selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, acyl, alkylsilyl and alkoxyalkyl, where acyl is selected from the group consisting of an aliphatic acyl of 1 to 6 carbons and an aromatic acyl, and where R is selected from the group consisting of alkyl, hydrogen, hydroxyalkyl, fluoroalkyl and a side chain of the formula ##STR12## wherein R.sup.1 represents hydrogen, hydroxy or O-acyl, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are each selected from the group consisting of alkyl, hydroxyalkyl and fluoroalkyl, or, when taken together represent the group --(CH.sub.2).sub.m -- where m is an integer having a value of from 2 to 5, R.sup.4 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, hydroxy, fluorine, O-acyl, alkyl, hydroxyalkyl and fluoroalkyl, R.sup.5 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, fluorine, alkyl, hydroxyalkyl and fluoroalkyl, or, R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 taken together represent double-bonded oxygen or double-bonded carbon, R.sup.6 and R.sup.7 are each selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, hydroxy, O-acyl, fluorine and alkyl, or, R.sup.6 and R.sup.7 taken together form a carbon-carbon double bond or a carbon-carbon triple bond, and wherein n at the carbon 24 position in the side chain is an integer having a value of from 1 to 5 and wherein the carbon at any one of positions 20, 22, or 23 in the side chain may be replaced by an O, S, or N atom, and a suitable carrier.
- 27. The method of claim 26 wherein the compound is 1.alpha., 25-dihydroxy-19-nor-vitamin D.sub.3.
- 28. The method of claim 26 wherein the compound is 1.alpha.-hydroxy-19-nor-vitamin D.sub.3.
- 29. The method of claim 26 wherein the compound is 1.alpha.,25-dihydroxy-19-nor-vitamin D.sub.2.
- 30. The method of claim 26 wherein the compound is 1.alpha.-hydroxy-19-nor-vitamin D.sub.2.
- 31. The method of claim 26 wherein the compound is 1.alpha.-hydroxy-19-nor-24 epi-vitamin D.sub.2.
- 32. The method of claim 26 wherein the compound is 1.alpha.,25-dihydroxy-19-nor-24 epi-vitamin D.sub.2.
- 33. The method of claim 26 wherein said effective amount is between about 0.001 .mu.g to about 10.0 .mu.g per gram of the composition.
