Claims
- 1. A cosmetic composition comprising:
a cosmetic carrier; and at least two extracellular matrix protein allelic variants, present in ratios approximately identical to those at which the variants are present in epidermis of a selected individual.
- 2. The cosmetic composition of claim 1 wherein the at least two extracellular matrix protein allelic variants are allelic variants of a protein selected from the group consisting of procollagen, tropoelastin, fibronectin, and laminin.
- 3. The cosmetic composition of claim 2 wherein the at least two extracellular matrix protein allelic variants are at least two allelic variants of procollagen.
- 4. The cosmetic composition of claim 2 wherein the at least two extracellular matrix protein allelic variants are at least two allelic variants of tropoelastin.
- 5. The cosmetic composition of claim 2 wherein the at least two extracellular matrix protein allelic variants are at least two allelic variants of fibronectin.
- 6. The cosmetic composition of claim 2 wherein the at least two extracellular matrix protein allelic variants are at least two allelic variants of laminin.
- 7. The cosmetic composition of claim 4 wherein the at least two extracellular matrix protein allelic variants are tropoelastin isomorphs.
- 8. The cosmetic composition of claim 1 wherein at least one of the extracellular matrix protein allelic variants has been modified to increase its solubility.
- 9. The cosmetic composition of claim 8 wherein the modification comprises addition of a moiety selected from the group consisting of liposomes, fatty acids, carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins.
- 10. The cosmetic composition of claim 9 wherein the modification comprises addition of amino acids selected from the group consisting of hydrophobic amino acids, hydrophilic amino acids, or lysine-rich amino acids.
- 11. The cosmetic composition of claim 1 wherein at least one of the extracellular matrix protein allelic variants has been modified to reduce its antigenicity.
- 12. The cosmetic composition of claim 11 wherein the modification comprises alteration of a solvent-accessible portion of the extracellular matrix protein allelic variant.
- 13. A method of formulating a cosmetic composition, the method comprising steps of:
selecting an individual on the basis of that individual having a predetermined desired skin characteristic; identifying the presence and amount of at least two extracellular matrix protein allelic variants in epidermis of the selected individual; individually preparing each of the identified extracellular matrix protein allelic variants; and combining the prepared extracellular matrix protein allelic variants with one another in a ratio approximately identical to that at which they were present in the selected individual's epidermis, and also with a cosmetic carrier.
- 14. The method of claim 13 wherein the step of identifying comprises identifying the presence and amount of at least two allelic variants of an extracellular matrix protein selected from the group consisting of procollagen, collagen, tropoelastin, elastin, fibronectin, and laminin.
- 15. The method of claim 14 wherein the step of individually preparing comprises chemically synthesizing each allelic variant.
- 16. The method of claim 15 wherein the step of individually preparing comprises steps of:
preparing a cDNA library from cells of the selected individual that express the allelic variants; screening the cDNA library to identify at least two isolates containing cloned sequences that encode different extracellular matrix protein allelic variants; expressing the identified cloned sequences in host cells so that each host cell synthesizes one allelic variant; and isolating each expressed allelic variant.
- 17. The method of claim 15 or claim 16 wherein the step of individually preparing comprises purifying each allelic variant until it is at least about 95% pure.
- 18. The method of claim 17 wherein the step of identifying comprises identifying the presence and amount of at least two human elastin allelic variants.
- 19. The method of claim 18 wherein the step of individually preparing comprises preparing soluble tropoelastin allelic variants corresponding to the identified elastin allelic variants.
- 20. The method of claim 17 wherein the step of identifying comprises identifying the presence and amount of at least two human tropoelastin allelic variants.
- 21. The methof of claim 17 wherein the allelic variants are not isomorphs of one another.
- 22. The method of claim 13 wherein the step of selecting comprises selecting a human individual on the basis of that individual having youthful-appearing skin.
- 23. The method of claim 13 wherein the step of selecting comprises selecting a human individual on the basis of predetermined criteria established by the composition manufacturer.
- 24. The method of claim 13 wherein the step of selecting comprises selecting a human individual on the basis of predetermined criteria established by the composition wearer.
- 25. The method of claim 13 wherein the step of selecting comprises selecting a human individual on the basis of that individual being the wearer of the composition.
