DETAILED DESCRIPTION

The present disclosure relates to packages for cosmetic compositions and applicators for applying the cosmetic compositions. In particular, the present disclosure describes applicators for applying cosmetic compositions having fibers to keratin fibers, such eyelashes or eyebrows.

One non-limiting example of a cosmetic composition includes dry fibers that are applied to eyelashes. A user first applies mascara, which may include one or more of fibers and adhesives, to the eyelashes. The cosmetic composition, which includes fine dry fibers, is then applied over the mascara to add volume to the lashes. Another coat of mascara may optionally be applied over the dry fibers to seal the fibers to the lashes.

Known cosmetic compositions with fibers can be difficult to apply because the fibers are not aligned, which can lead to a clumpy appearance. Moreover, for these cosmetic compositions, particular those with dry fibers, electrostatic charges can cause the fibers to stick together, further contributing to an undesirable clumpy appearance.

Embodiments of the disclosed and claimed subject matter are directed to an improved applicator for cosmetic compositions with fibers, wherein the applicator aligns the fibers to avoid the clumpy appearance resulting from known applicators. Embodiments may be described herein with reference to cosmetic compositions having dry fibers and applicators for applying the same, however, it will be appreciated that the disclosure is not limited to cosmetic compositions containing dry fibers. In this regard, the term “cosmetic composition” more generally includes any cosmetic compositions to be applied to keratin fibers. Further, as used herein, the term “applicator” is not limited to a particular applicator configuration and may include various configurations in which the applicator is integral with or separate from other components of the cosmetic package.

FIGS. 1 and 2 depict an embodiment of a cosmetic package 20. The package 20 includes a container 30 with a body 32 that defines an internal space 34 configured to contain a cosmetic composition 22, examples of which were described briefly above. The body 32 further includes a neck 36 with an aperture 38 sized and configured to receive a portion of an applicator 100 into the internal space 34 of the container 30. In an embodiment, the neck includes a locking feature 40 that engages a corresponding locking feature 116 of the applicator 100 (described later) to selectively retain a portion of the applicator within the container 30.

In an embodiment, the locking feature 40 includes one or more external threads. In an embodiment, the locking feature 40 includes an annular protrusion or recess that engages a corresponding annular recess or protrusion, respectively, formed in the applicator 100. In an embodiment, the locking feature is any suitable configuration that provides selective retention of a portion of the applicator 100 within the container 30.

FIGS. 3-7 show an embodiment of the applicator 100 shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 according to aspects of the present disclosure. As will be described in further detail, the applicator 100 includes a first half 120 connected to a second half 170 by a hinge 112 so that the applicator is selectively moveable between a first state, shown in FIG. 4, and a second state, shown in FIG. 5.

As best shown in FIGS. 3-5, the first half 120 of the applicator 100 includes an elongate support 130 with a grip portion 122 disposed at one end thereof. In an embodiment, the elongate support 130 includes a support member 132 having a generally cylindrical outer surface that varies in diameter and is truncated by an engagement surface 134. In an embodiment, the grip engagement surface 126 and the support member engagement surface 134 are both planar and are parallel to each other. In an embodiment, the grip engagement surface 126 and the support member engagement surface 134 are coplanar. In an embodiment, the grip engagement surface 126 and the support member engagement surface 134 have any suitable shape and/or contour. In an embodiment, the grip portion 122 includes a locking portion 128. In an embodiment, the locking portion 128 forms the previously mentioned locking feature 40 that selectively engages a corresponding locking feature 116 of the applicator 100 to selectively retain a portion of the applicator within the container 30. In an embodiment, the locking portion 128 cooperates with a locking portion 178 on the second half 170 to provide a locking feature 40 that selectively engages a corresponding locking feature 116 of the applicator 100 to selectively retain a portion of the applicator within the container 30. Still referring to FIGS. 3-5, the grip portion 122 is coupled to one end of the hinge 122, thereby also coupling the elongate support 130 (and collectively, the first half 120) to the hinge 122.

Still referring to FIGS. 3-5, the second half 170 of the applicator 100 is similar to the first half 120 except as noted below. In this regard, the second half 170 includes a grip portion 172 coupled to an end of an elongate support 180. The grip portion 172 includes an outer gripping surface 174 truncated by an engagement surface 176. In an embodiment, the previously mentioned locking portion 178 is formed on the gripping surface 174 proximate to the elongate support 180.

In an embodiment, the grip portion 172 and/or the elongate support 180 of the second half 170 are identical to or similar to the grip portion 122 and elongate support 130 of the first half 120.

FIGS. 4 and 5 show the applicator 100 in the first (open) state and a second (closed) state, respectively. In the illustrated embodiment, the hinge 112 is undeflected when in the first state, and the hinge 112 is deflected by a user to move the applicator 100 to the second state. That is, the applicator 100 is reciprocal between the first and second states between in a manner similar to that of traditional tweezers.

Referring to FIG. 4, in the first state, the hinge 112 is undeflected, and the first elongate support 130 and the second elongate support 180 extend from the hinge 112 in generally the same plane. In an embodiment, the first and second elongate supports 130 and 180 form an angle θ. In an embodiment, the angle θ is approximately 8°. In an embodiment, the angle θ is in a range of approximately 5° to 15°. In an embodiment, the angle θ is any suitable angle to provide effective use of the applicator as described herein. In an embodiment, the first and second elongate supports 130 and 180 are offset and parallel to each other in the first state.

To move the applicator 100 from the first state to the second state, shown in FIG. 5, a user deflects the hinge 112 by pressing the first and second elongate supports 130 and 180 toward each other. In an embodiment, the user holds the applicator 100 by the first grip portion 122 and second grip portion 172 and squeezes the first and second grip portions together to deflect the hinge 112. As the hinge 112 deflects, the ends of the first and second elongate supports 130 and 180 that are opposite the grip portions 122 and 172 move towards each other until the applicator 100 reaches the second state.

As shown in FIG. 5, when the applicator is in the second state, the first elongate support 130 is engaged with the second elongate support 180. More specifically, the engagement surface 126 of the first grip portion 122 engages the engagement surface 176 of the second grip portion 172 so the first and second grip portions cooperate to form a grip 114. With the first grip portion 122 engaged with the second grip portion 172, the first locking portion 128 cooperates with the second locking portion 178 to form the locking feature 116 that selectively secures the applicator 100 to the container 30, as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2.

When the applicator is in the second state, the engagement surface 134 of the first support member 132 engages the engagement surface 184 of the second support member 182. With the first and second supports members 132 and 182 so engaged, the overall size of the first and second support members 132 and 182 allow for the first and second support members to be inserted into the aperture 38 of the container 30.

The hinge 112 configuration shown in FIGS. 3-5 is a representative embodiment only, and it will be appreciated that other embodiments are possible within the scope of the present disclosure. In an embodiment, the hinge is a flexible, i.e., elastically deformable, hinge having any suitable shape or configuration that enables the first and second elongate supports 130 and 180 to move between first (open) and second (closed) states. In an embodiment, the hinge is a pinned connection between the first and second elongate supports 130 and 180 so that the first and second elongate supports are rotatable relative to each other about an axis. In an embodiment, the hinge is a pinned connection, and the first and second elongate supports 130 include finger rings, similar to scissors. These and other embodiments are contemplated and should be considered within the scope of the present disclosure.

As best shown in FIGS. 3-7, the applicator 100 includes an anvil 140 and a comb 190 disposed on the ends of the first and second elongate supports 130 and 180, respectively, that cooperate to enable a user to apply the cosmetic composition 22 to one or more keratinous fibers 100, such as eyelashes. More specifically, the anvil 140 and comb 190 apply the cosmetic composition 22 in a manner that aligns fibers in the cosmetic composition with, for example, the user's eyelashes 100 and also separates the eyelashes to provide a fuller, natural appearance.

In the illustrated embodiment, the first elongate support 130 includes an anvil 140 disposed on an end thereof opposite the corresponding grip portion 122, i.e., opposite the hinge 112. The second elongate support 180 includes a comb 190 disposed on an end thereof opposite the corresponding grip portion 172, i.e., opposite the hinge 112.

In the illustrated embodiment, the anvil 140 includes a profile defined at least in part by a first generally planar surface 142 and a second generally planar surface 144. The first and second surfaces 142 and 144 are arranged at an angle relative to each other such that the anvil 140 has a generally V-shaped profile, as best shown in FIGS. 6 and 7.

The comb 190 includes a plurality of teeth 194 extending radially from a base 192 portion. In an embodiment, the teeth 194 are positioned such that adjacent teeth have a distance therebetween corresponding to a desired separation of the user's lashes 50 after the cosmetic composition 22 is applied. In an embodiment, adjacent teeth 194 have any suitable spacing therebetween to accomplish a desired appearance when the cosmetic composition 22 is applied to the user's lashes 50.

Still referring to FIGS. 6 and 7, the comb 190 has a profile 196, when viewed from an end of the second elongate support 180, that corresponds to the profile of the anvil 140. That is, individual teeth 194 of the comb 190 have profiles that combine to create a profile that corresponds to the profile of the anvil 140. In an embodiment, the profile of the comb 190 is offset from the profile of the anvil 140 when the applicator is in the second state. In an embodiment, at least portion of the profile of the comb 190 engages at least a portion of the anvil 140.

Embodiments of the illustrated applicator 100 enable a user to apply a cosmetic composition 22 to keratinous fibers 50, e.g., to apply dry fibers or mascara to eyelashes. To apply the cosmetic composition 22, the user obtains a cosmetic package 20, such as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2. If the cosmetic package is closed, i.e., the applicator 100 is partially disposed within the container 20, and the locking feature 116 of the applicator 100 is engaged with the locking feature 40 of the container 30, the user disengages the locking features from each other. In an embodiment, the user unscrews the applicator from the container 20. In an embodiment, the user applies a force suitable to overcome an interference fit between the locking features 116 and 40. In an embodiment, the user disengages the locking features 116 and 40 from each other using any suitable means.

With the locking features 116 and 40 disengaged, the user withdraws the applicator 100 from the container. As the applicator 100 is withdrawn, the applicator is loaded with the cosmetic composition 22. That is, the cosmetic composition covers the first and second elongate supports 130 and 180 and fills the comb 190 and anvil 140 portions of the applicator. When the applicator 100 is fully withdrawn, the applicator reverts to the first (open) state shown in FIG. 4.

The user positions the open applicator 100 so that the lashes extend through the space between the comb 190 and the anvil 140. The user the moves the applicator 100 from the first state to the second state, shown in FIG. 5, by pressing the gripping portions 122 and 172 towards each other. As the applicator 100 moves toward the second state, the anvil 140 moves the eyelashes 50 into engagement with the comb 190. In the second state, the eyelashes 50 are engaged with the comb 190 and extend through the spaces between the teeth 94 of the comb 190, as shown in FIGS. 6 and 7.

With the applicator 100 still in the second state, the user moves the applicator 100 toward the free ends of the eyelashes 50, i.e., away from the user's face, so that the comb 190 is drawn across the eyelashes. As the comb 190 moves across the eyelashes 50, some of the cosmetic composition 22 is transferred from the applicator 100 to the eyelashes. At the same time, the comb 190 separates the eyelashes and also orients dry fibers in the cosmetic composition 22 if present. By rotating the applicator about a longitudinal axis while moving the comb 190 across the eyelashes 50, a user can curl the eyelashes while applying the cosmetic composition.

If a user wants to apply additional cosmetic composition 22 to the eyelashes 50 the applicator 100 can be reloaded by moving the applicator back to the first state, inserting the applicator into the container 30, withdrawing the reloaded applicator from the container, and then moving the applicator back to the second state. With the applicator 100 reloaded with the cosmetic composition 22 and in the second state, the user can apply additional cosmetic composition 22 to the eyelashes 50.

When a suitable amount of cosmetic composition 22 has been applied to the eyelashes, the user moves the applicator back to the first state, inserts the applicator into the container 30, and then engages the locking features 116 and 40 to secure the applicator 100 relative to the container 30.

FIGS. 8 through 12 show another embodiment of an applicator 200 formed in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure. The applicator 200 is similar to the applicator 100 shown in FIGS. 3-7, except as described below. For the sake of brevity, similar features and characteristics will not be described again with the understanding that features of the applicator 200 identified by reference number 2XX correspond to similar features of applicator 100 identified with reference number 1XX unless otherwise noted. For example, gripping surface 224 and support member 282 shown in FIG. 9 correspond to gripping surface 124 and support member 182, respectively, shown in FIGS. 4, unless otherwise noted.
