[0007] None of the prior art patents disclose the unique attractive design disclosed herein or are such designs as functional and inexpensive as the proposed invention. The self-cleaning feature of applicants invention is a unique advance over the prior art.

SUMMARY OF INVENTION

[0008] This invention relates to cosmetic pencils and more specifically to a device for sharpening such pencils. In use, the cosmetic head portion on the pencil, which is encased longitudinally by wood sheathing, becomes dull or the tip may break off. This necessitates looking for and using a separate sharpener to form a new tip, which may be quite inconvenient. This invention proposes a unique sharpener, which is part of the cap for the pencil.

[0009] A cosmetic pencil includes a sharpened head with the cosmetic center protruding outwardly from the wood sheathing at the head end, an elongated body and a second closed end. A cap includes a top or end portion with a downwardly extending wall surrounding an axial recess, and includes a second open end to engage the sharpened head with protruding cosmetic.

[0010] The cap includes an elongated slot in the wall having an angled side and a flat portion extending outwardly from the slot side at an angle. A blade is mounted to the flat portion and extends inwardly at an angle into the slot to engage a pencil for sharpening purposes. The rear of the flat portion extends upwardly from the cap wall and presents a curved surface rising upwardly from the wall. The cap includes a cleaning portion to prevent debris from accumulating between the cutting edge of the blade and the slot.

[0011] In use, one merely rotates the pencil within the cap and the blade shaves back the wooden sheathing to expose and sharpen the cosmetic pencil. The shaved sheathing and cosmetic is discarded via the open slot by a chisel point protrusion that directs the debris outwardly.

[0012] Accordingly, an object of this invention is to provide a new and improved sharpener for cosmetic pencils.

[0013] Another object of this invention is to provide a new and improved cosmetic pencil sharpener wherein a sharpener comprises part of the cap for the pencil.

[0014] A further object of this invention is to provide a new and improved cosmetic pencil sharpener which includes a self-cleaning portion which prevents debris from accumulating between the cutting blade and the slot.

[0015] A more specific object of this invention is to provide a new and improved cosmetic pencil sharpener which is part of the cap encasing the pencil head and extends outwardly for mounting a blade thereto which extends at an angle into a slot in the cap to engage the head of the pencil and provide a sharpening action upon turning the pencil with the cap being maintained in a fixed position while a self-cleaning protrusion directs debris outwardly from the slot.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0024] Referring now to the drawings, this invention comprises a cap 10 having a top 11 at one end and a downwardly extending wall 12 with a substantially circular recess 13 extending longitudinally within said wall 12. The cap recess 13 engages the head 14 of a cosmetic pencil 20 to permit carrying the pencil 20 without the cosmetic 15 contacting clothing or other items in a pocketbook. It also prevents snagging in pockets and pocketbooks.

[0025] The cosmetic pencil 20 comprises a central longitudinal element of compressed cosmetic 15 surrounded by a wood sheath 16 as in a lead pencil. The pencil 20 includes a head 14 at one end with the sharpened pencil head 14 protruding from a conically shaved portion 17. The cosmetic pencil 20 is subject to wear and consequently must be sharpened frequently. This necessitates the use of a sharpener, which is not always available or convenient to use.

[0026] The pencil 20 also includes a metal or plastic cap 19 at the opposite end to protect the cosmetic 15 within the wood sheath 16 and to seal the end of the pencil 20. Another metal or plastic cap 18 may be mounted on the top of the cap 10. Cap 18 may be removed from cap 10 to facilitate cleaning of the wood shavings by pulling to release the outwardly biased prong 27. These caps 18 and 19 also serve a decorative function.

[0027] The cap 10 includes an axial slot 21 in the wall 12 having a flat surface 22 protruding upwardly at an angle. The flat surface 22 has a blade 23 mounted thereto with a cutting edge 24 extending downwardly into the slot 21 to engage the head 14 of the cosmetic pencil 20. The rear portion 25 of the flat surface 22 protrudes upwardly in an arc from the cap wall 12 and is rounded in a smooth configuration to eliminate the problem of snagging. An additional support portion 26 is molded into the rear portion 22 to provide further backing during use of the blade 23. The cap 10 itself is a unitary one-piece structure.

[0028] As shown in FIGS. 5-7, the cap may include a self-cleaning portion which comprises a top 18 having a downwardly extending intermediate portion 27 and a chisel-like protrusion 28 on the lower end 29. The protrusion 28 removes debris which accumulates between the cutting edge of the blade 24 and the slot 21. Thus, the debris which comprises wood shavings and cosmetic 15 is directed outwardly from the slot 21 to prevent the slot 21 from becoming clogged with cosmetic and wood shavings 15.

[0029] In operation, the cap 10 is held firmly and the elongated pencil 20 is turned. The blade 23 engages the head 14 of the pencil 20 and shaves the wood sheath 16 and cosmetic 15 to form a point on the cosmetic pencil 20. The wood shavings and excess cosmetic 15 are ejected from the slot 21 by the chisel-like protrusion 28 maintaining the slot 21 clear. Thus the invention provides an attractive, inexpensive and convenient means to sharpen cosmetic pencils.

[0030] While the invention has been explained by a detailed description of certain specific embodiments, it is understood that various modifications and substitutions can be made in any of them within the scope of the appended claims, which are intended also to include equivalents of such embodiments.
