Claims
- 1. In a fuel pump delivery registration system for registering the volume and cost amounts of each fuel delivery and having a register unit with resettable volume and cost counter sections with pairs of oppositely facing resettable volume and cost counters respectively, with banks of coaxial resettable volume and cost counter wheels of increasing order respectively, for registering the volume and cost amounts of fuel delivered respectively; first mechanical drive means connected for mechanically indexing the banks of volume counter wheels for registering the volume amount of fuel delivered; second mechanical drive means connected for mechanically indexing the banks of cost counter wheels for registering the cost amount of fuel delivered; and counter reset means selectively operable for mechanically resetting the banks of cost and volume counter wheels between fuel deliveries; and register drive means connected to the first and second mechanical drive means for indexing the banks of volume and cost counter wheels respectively for registering the volume and cost amounts of fuel delivered; the improvement wherein the register drive means comprises a register drive unit having an explosion-proof housing underlying the register unit and attached thereto to form an assembly therewith, a rotatable input drive shaft extending upwardly through the explosion-proof housing and having a lower end rotatable in accordance with the volume amount of fuel delivered and an upper end connected to the first mechanical drive means for mechanically indexing the banks of volume counter wheels therewith for registering the volume amount of fuel delivered, electrical motor means mounted within the explosion-proof housing having cost drive shaft means extending upwardly through the explosion-proof housing connected to the second mechanical drive means for mechanically indexing the banks of cost counter wheels therewith for registering the cost amount of fuel delivered, price switch means presettable for establishing the unit volume price of fuel, and motor operating means mounted within the explosion-proof housing for being operated by the input drive shaft, for operating the electrical motor means for indexing the banks of cost counter wheels for registering the cost amount of fuel delivered in accordance with the volume amount of fluid delivered and the unit volume price established by the setting of the price switch means.
- 2. A fuel pump delivery registration system according to claim 1 wherein the second mechanical drive means comprises first and second wheel drive means mechanically connected for indexing the lowest order and second lowest order cost counter wheels respectively for registering the corresponding order cost amounts of fuel delivered, and wherein the electrical motor means comprises first and second electrical motors having respective cost drive shafts extending upwardly through the explosion-proof housing and connected to the first and second wheel drive means respectively for mechanically indexing the lowest order and second lowest order cost counter wheels therewith for registering the corresponding order cost amounts of fuel delivered.
- 3. A fuel pump delivery registration system according to claim 2 wherein the motor operating means operates the first electrical motor for indexing the lowest order cost counter wheels at a rate asynchronously relative to the counting rate of the corresponding order cost amount of fuel delivered when said latter counting rate is greater than a predetermined rate and operates the second electrical motor for indexing the second lowest order cost counter wheels to generally track said corresponding order cost amount of fuel delivered.
- 4. A fuel pump delivery registration system according to claim 3 wherein the pair of oppositely facing cost counters have respective banks of at least three coaxial resettable counter wheels of increasing order; wherein the second mechanical drive means comprises intermittent wheel drive means connecting each cost counter wheel of higher order than the second lowest order cost counter wheels for being intermittently indexed by the second electrical motor, simultaneously with the second lowest order cost counter wheels, for registering the corresponding order cost amount of fuel delivered; and wherein the motor operating means operates the second electrical stepping motor at least at two relatively lower and higher rates, for indexing said higher order cost counter wheels simultaneously with the said second lowest order counter wheels at a relatively lower rate and for solely indexing the second lowest order cost counter wheels to successive counts without interruption at a relatively higher rate.
- 5. A fuel pump delivery registration system according to claim 3 wherein the register unit comprises a cost totalizer mechanically connected to the second wheel drive means for being indexed by the second electrical motor for registering a cummulative cost amount of fuel delivered, and wherein the motor operating means, during operation of the reset means for resetting the volume and cost counter wheels, operates the second electrical motor to index the cost totalizer to register an additional cost amount generally equal to the cost amount of the lowest order counter wheels before they are reset.
- 6. A fuel pump delivery registration system according to claim 2 wherein the motor operating means automatically operates the first electrical motor at a plurality of different successively increasing rates, for indexing the lowest order cost counter wheels at successively increasing counting rates respectively for accelerating the lowest order cost counter wheels from rest at the beginning of a fuel delivery for registering the corresponding order cost amount of fuel delivered.
- 7. A fuel pump delivery registration system according to claim 2 wherein the first and second electrical motors are stepping motors and wherein each electrical motor drive shaft comprises a flywheel and a resilient coupling intermediate the electrical motor and flywheel and cooperating with the flywheel for reducing oscillation of the respective wheel drive means.
- 8. In a fuel pump delivery registration system according to claim 2 wherein the first and second electrical motors are multiple phase stepping motors, each having a plurality of electrical stepping phases successively operable for stepping the motor to a plurality of successive steps thereof respectively, and wherein the motor operating means comprises feedback means for each motor having a photo pickup and a rotary light shutter mounted on the respective motor drive shaft for cooperation with the pickup, the light shutter having angularly spaced, alternating light transitting and light blocking portions having equal angular widths corresponding to said plurality of steps of the respective stepping motor, the motor operating means being operable for reading each pickup for checking the stepping operation of the respective motor.
- 9. A fuel pump delivery registration system according to claim 1 wherein the motor operating means is resettable between fuel deliveries, and wherein the register drive unit comprises a reset switch mounted within the explosion-proof housing, operable for resetting the motor operating means and a switch actuator extending through the explosion-proof housing for operating the reset switch externally of the housing, the switch actuator being connected to be operated by the counter reset means for resetting the motor operating means when the reset means is operated to reset the cost and volume counter wheels.
- 10. A fuel pump delivery registration system according to claim 1 wherein the register unit comprises a mechanical signal operable for signalling faulty operation of the register drive unit, wherein the register drive unit comprises a signal actuator extending through the explosion-proof housing for operating the mechanical signal from within the housing, and solenoid means within the housing connected to the signal actuator for operating the mechanical signal, and wherein the motor operating means is operable for determining predetermined types of faulty operation of the register drive unit and for operating the mechanical signal with the solenoid means when any such faulty operation is determined.
- 11. A fuel pump delivery registration system according to claim 1 wherein the price switch means comprises a plurality of decimal price switches of increasing order, mounted within the explosion-proof housing, for establishing respective places of a multiple place unit volume price, and wherein the register drive unit comprises a first bank of a plurality of decimal price indicators of increasing order for the plurality of price switches respectively, for collectively indicating the established multiple place unit volume price, the bank of decimal price indicators being rotatably mounted on the explosion-proof housing and being mechanically connected to the decimal price switches respectively for automatically indicating the multiple place unit volume price established thereby.
- 12. A fuel pump delivery registration system according to claim 11 wherein the register drive unit comprises a second said bank of decimal price indicators rotatably mounted on the explosion-proof housing and mechanically connected to the first bank of price indicators respectively for automatically indicating the established multiple place unit volume price.
- 13. A fuel pump delivery registration system according to claim 1 wherein the register drive unit comprises a plurality of said price switch means for establishing a plurality of different unit volume prices of fuel for a plurality of different fuel products, and selector means for individually selecting said plurality of price switch means for computing the cost amount of fuel delivered therewith.
- 14. Conversion means for converting a register and variator assembly having a resettable fuel pump register unit with resettable volume and cost counter sections with pairs of oppositely facing resettable volume and cost counters respectively, with respective banks of resettable coaxial volume and cost counter wheels of increasing order, for registering the volume and cost amounts of fuel delivered respectively, and register reset means for mechanically resetting the volume and cost counter wheels between fuel deliveries; and a mechanical variator unit underlying the register unit and detachably attached thereto to form a register and variator assembly, the mechanical variator unit having a vertical rotary volume shaft with a lower end rotatable in accordance with the volume amount of fuel delivered and an upper end mechanically connected for indexing the banks of volume counter wheels for registering the volume amount of fuel delivered; the mechanical variator unit being presettable to establish the unit volume price of fuel and having a rotary output connected for indexing the banks of cost counter wheels for registering the cost amount of fuel delivered in accordance with the volume amount of fuel delivered and the unit volume price established by the variator setting; the improvement wherein the conversion means comprises a substitute register drive unit for the variator unit having an explosion-proof housing underlying the register unit and detachably attached thereto to provide an assembly therewith, a vertical rotary drive shaft extending though the explosion-proof housing, having a lower end rotatable in accordance with the volume amount of fuel delivered and an upper end mechanically connected for mechanically indexing the banks of volume counter wheels for registering the volume amount of fuel delivered, pulse generating means mounted within the explosion proof housing, driven by said rotary drive shaft for generating an electrical pulse train with an electrical pulse for each predetermined incremental volume amount of fuel delivered; electrical motor means mounted within the explosion-proof housing having shaft means extending through the explosion-proof housing mechanically connected for mechanically indexing the banks of cost counter wheels for registering the cost amount of fuel delivered; and motor operating means, including unit volume price switch means presettable for establishing the unit volume price of fuel, mounted within the explosion-proof housing for operating the electrical motor means for indexing the banks of cost counter wheels for registering the cost amount of fuel delivered in accordance with the number of pulses generated by the pulse generating means and the unit volume price established by the price switch means.
- 15. Conversion means for converting a register and variator assembly according to claim 14 wherein the electrical motor means comprises first and second electrical stepping motors having first and second motor drive shafts respectively extending through the explosion-proof housing, wherein the conversion means further comprises first and second wheel drive means mechanically connecting the first and second motor drive shafts respectively, for indexing the lowest order and second lowest order cost counter wheels respectively for registering corresponding order cost amounts of fuel delivered.
- 16. Conversion means for converting a register and variator assembly according to claim 15 wherein the motor operating means is operable for stepping the first electrical stepping motor for accelerating and decelerating said lowest order cost counter wheels by stepping the first electrical stepping motor at a succession of different intermediate stepping rates with at least one motor step at each intermediate rate.
- 17. In a fuel pump delivery registration system for registering the cost amount of each fuel delivery and having a register unit with a resettable cost counter with a bank of coaxial resettable cost counter wheels of increasing order respectively, for registering the cost amount of fuel delivered, mechanical drive means connected for mechanically indexing the bank of cost counter wheels for registering the cost amount of fuel delivered; and counter reset means selectively operable for mechanically resetting the bank of cost counter wheels between fuel deliveries; and register drive means connected to the mechanical drive means for indexing the bank of cost counter wheels for registering the cost amount of fuel delivered; the improvement wherein the register drive means comprises a register drive unit having an explosion-proof housing underlying the register unit and attached thereto to form an assembly therewith, a rotatable input drive shaft extending into the explosion-proof housing and having an input end rotatable in accordance with the volume amount of fuel delivered, electrical motor means mounted within the explosion-proof housing having cost drive shaft means extending through the explosion-proof housing, connected to the mechanical drive means for mechanically indexing the bank of cost counter wheels therewith for registering the cost amount of fuel delivered, price switch means presettable for establishing the unit volume price of fuel, and motor operating means mounted within the explosion-proof housing for being operated by the input drive shaft, for operating the electrical motor means for indexing the bank of cost counter wheels for registering the cost amount of fuel delivered in accordance with the rotation of the input drive shaft and the unit volume price established by the setting of the price switch means.
- 18. In a fuel pump delivery registration system for registering the volume and cost amounts of each fuel delivery and having a register unit with resettable volume and cost counters with banks of coaxial resettable volume and cost counter wheels of increasing order respectively, for registering the volume and cost amounts of fuel delivered respectively; first mechanical drive means connected for mechanically indexing each bank of volume counter wheels for registering the volume amount of fuel delivered; second mechanical drive means connected for mechanically indexing each bank of cost counter wheels for registering the cost amount of fuel delivered; and counter reset means selectively operable for mechanically resetting the banks of cost and volume counter wheels between fuel deliveries; and register drive means connected to the first and second mechanical drive means for indexing the banks of volume and cost counter wheels respectively for registering the volume and cost amounts of fuel delivered; the improvement wherein the register drive means comprises a register drive unit having an explosion-proof housing underlying the register unit and attached thereto, a rotatable input drive shaft extending upwardly through the explosion-proof housing and having a lower end rotatable in accordance with the volume amount of fuel delivered and an upper end connected to the first mechanical drive means for mechanically indexing each bank of volume counter wheels for registering the volume amount of fuel delivered, electrical motor means mounted within the explosion-proof housing, having cost drive shaft means extending upwardly through the explosion-proof housing and connected to the second mechanical drive means for mechanically indexing each bank of cost counter wheels therewith for registering the cost amount of fuel delivered, price switch means mounted within the explosion-proof housing presettable for establishing the unit volume price of fuel, and motor operating means mounted within the explosion-proof housing operated by the input drive shaft for operating the electrical motor means for indexing each bank of cost counter wheels for registering the cost amount of fuel delivered in accordance with the volume amount of fuel delivered registered by the bank of volume counter wheels and the unit volume price established by the setting of the price switch means.
