Claims
- 1. A countershaft transmission comprising:
- a first shaft having first and second gears connected to rotate therewith;
- a second shaft having a third gear rotatable therewith, and fourth and fifth gears freely rotatably mounted thereon in intermeshing engagement with the first and second gears respectively;
- an idler sixth gear in intermeshing engagement with the fourth gear;
- a third shaft having a seventh gear affixed thereto and in intermeshing engagement with the third gear and an eighth gear freely rotatably mounted thereon in intermeshing engagement with the sixth gear; and
- rotating clutch means for selectively connecting one of the fourth gear to the second shaft and providing a first speed condition of rotation of the third shaft in a preselected direction, the fifth gear to the second shaft and providing a second speed condition of rotation of the third shaft in the preselected direction, and the eighth gear to the third shaft for providing a third speed condition of rotation of the third shaft in a direction opposite the preselected direction.
- 2. The countershaft transmission of claim 1 wherein the rotating clutch means includes first and second rotating clutch assemblies mounted on the second shaft.
- 3. The countershaft transmission of claim 2 wherein the rotating clutch means includes a third rotating clutch assembly mounted on the third shaft.
- 4. The countershaft transmission of claim 3 including a first output gear connected to the third shaft, a fourth shaft coaxial with the third shaft and having a second output gear connected thereon, and a fourth rotating clutch assembly for selectively connecting the fourth shaft to the third shaft for conjoint rotation.
- 5. A countershaft transmission comprising:
- a first shaft having first and second gears connected thereto;
- a second shaft having a third gear connected thereto, fourth and fifth gears rotatably mounted thereon and intermeshingly engaged with the first and second gears respectively, and first and second clutch means for individually selectively connecting the fourth and fifth gears to the second shaft respectively;
- an idler sixth gear intermeshingly engaged with the fourth gear;
- a third shaft having a seventh gear connected thereto and intermeshingly engaged with the third gear, the third shaft being driven at one of two speeds in a preselected direction in response to selective actuation of one of the first and second clutch means; and
- third clutch means for driving the third shaft in a rotational direction opposite the preselected direction in response to rotation of the idler sixth gear.
- 6. The countershaft transmission of claim 5 wherein the third clutch means includes an eighth gear freely rotatably mounted on the third shaft and intermeshingly engaged with the idler sixth gear, and a clutch assembly for connecting the eighth gear to the third shaft.
- 7. A countershaft transmission comprising:
- a first shaft having first and second gears rotatable therewith;
- a second shaft having a third gear rotatable therewith, fourth and fifth gears rotatably mounted thereon and intermeshingly engaged with the first and second gears respectively, and first and second clutch assemblies for individually selectively connecting the fourth and fifth gears to the second shaft respectively;
- an idler sixth gear intermeshingly engaged with the fourth gear; and
- a third shaft having a seventh gear rotatable therewith and intermeshingly engaged with the third gear, an eighth gear rotatably mounted thereon and intermeshingly engaged with the idler sixth gear, and a third clutch assembly for selectively connecting the eighth gear to the third shaft, the selective individual engagement of the first, second and third clutch assemblies being so constructed and arranged with respect to the gears as to provide forward low, forward high and reverse speed operation of the third shaft.
- 8. A countershaft transmission comprising:
- an input first shaft arranged on a first axis;
- a second shaft arranged on a second axis;
- an output third shaft arranged on a third axis;
- a plurality of gears operatively associated with the shafts;
- a reversing idler gear arranged on a fourth axis parallel to the first, second, and third axes; and
- low, high, and reverse clutch assembly means for selectively connecting the gears in a preselected manner and respectively providing either one of two forward speeds and one reverse speed at the third shaft, the low and high clutch assembly means being disposed generally along the second shaft and the reverse clutch assembly means being disposed generally along the third shaft.
