Claims
- 1. In the process for preparing solid polymers or copolymers by the polymerization of vinyl monomers using a free radical initiator, the improvement which comprises using as said initiator a peroxide of the formula R--W--R' where:
- a. W is selected from --C(.dbd.O)-- or --C(.dbd.O)R.sup.4 C(.dbd.O)--;
- b. R and R' are identical and are selected from R.sub.3 OO--C(R.sub.1)(R.sub.2)--R.sup.3 O--, (R.sub.3 OO).sub.2 C(R.sub.4)--R.sup.2 O--, R.sub.3 OOC(.dbd.O)R.sup.3 O--, R.sub.3 OOC(.dbd.O)OR.sup.3 O--, R.sub.1 OC(.dbd.O)OO--C(R.sub.1)(R.sub.2)--R.sup.2 O--, and R.sub.1 C(.dbd.O)OO--C(R.sub.1)(R.sub.2)--R.sup.2 O--;
- c. R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are aliphatic having 1-12 carbon atoms, cycloaliphatic having 3-12 carbon atoms, or aromatic having 6-12 carbon atoms;
- d. R.sub.3 is aliphatic or cycloaliphatic, each having 4-10 carbon atoms and the carbon atom joined to the peroxy oxygen atom is a tertiary carbon atom;
- e. R.sub.4 is aliphatic having 1-10 carbon atoms or cycloaliphatic having 3-12 carbon atoms;
- f. R.sub.6 is H or lower alkyl;
- g. Y is the diradical O, S, or N-R.sub.6 ;
- h. R.sup.2 is an aliphatic diradical having 1-10 carbon atoms or a cycloaliphatic diradical having 3-12 carbon atoms;
- i. R.sup.3 is aliphatic diradical having 1-10 carbon atoms, cycloaliphatic diradical having 3-12 carbon atoms, aromatic diradical having 6-12 carbon atoms, or araliphatic diradical having 7-16 carbon atoms; and
- j. R.sup.4 is selected from R.sup.3, YR.sup.3 Y, R.sup.3 C(.dbd.O)YR.sup.3 YC(.dbd.O)R.sup.3, YR.sup.3 YC(.dbd.O)YR.sup.3 YC(.dbd.O)YR.sup.3 Y, YR.sup.3 YC(.dbd.O)R.sup.3 C(.dbd.O)YR.sup.3 Y, YR.sup.3 C(.dbd.O)YR.sup.3 C(.dbd.O)YR.sup.3 Y, YR.sup.3 C(.dbd.O)YR.sup.3 YC(.dbd.O)R.sup.3 Y, YR.sup.3 YC(.dbd.O)YR.sup.3 Y, YR.sup.3 YC(.dbd.O)R.sup.3 Y and YR.sup.3 YR.sup.3 Y.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the vinyl monomer is styrene.
- 3. The process of claim 2 wherein said initiator is di(2(t-butylperoxycarbonyl)ethyl)carbonate and the polymerization temperature is about 100.degree. C.
- 4. The process of claim 2 wherein said initiator is di(1,3-dimethyl-3-(t-butylperoxy)butyl)carbonate and the polymerization temperature is about 115.degree. C.
