Claims
- 1. A coupling element, for coupling a radiation source to a monomode optical transmission fiber having a core and a cladding, comprising a semi-ellipsoidal lens formed as a unitary mass with the fiber core on an end of the fiber, said fiber core having a viscosity of 10.sup.7 to 10.sup.8.5 poises and said fiber cladding having a viscosity of 10.sup.10 to 10.sup.11 poises at a temperature at which the lens is formed.
- 2. A coupling element, as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that the core at the end of the fiber has an elliptical cross-section.
- 3. A coupling element, as claimed in claim 2, characterized in that the cross-section of the core monotonically transforms along the length of the fiber from an elliptical cross-section at the fiber end into a circular cross-section in the body of the fiber.
