This application relates to the field of athletic equipment and particularly to equipment for constructing temporary sports courts.
Sporting games are popular pastimes for many people attending social gatherings, such as tailgating events, backyard barbeques, and any of various other parties. Examples of such sporting games include horseshoes, corn-hole, bocce, ladder toss and football toss. These games are popular, in part, because the game can be played in a relatively small space with multiple players.
Pickleball has become increasingly popular in the United States and is widely played by both serious and casual fans of the game. Pickleball is a racket or paddle sport in which two (singles) or four (doubles) players hit a perforated, hollow plastic ball with paddles over a relatively low (34-inch-high) net until one side is unable to return the ball or commits an infraction. While pickleball resembles tennis and table tennis, pickleball has specific rules, paddles and court dimensions. The pickleball paddle is larger than the one used in table tennis, but smaller than a tennis racket. The hard plastic ball used in pickleball produces less bounce than tennis balls.
Pickleball games are played on a dedicated pickleball court that is forty-four feet long and twenty feet wide. In instances where a dedicated pickleball court is unavailable, a tennis court is sometimes used as a substitute, but a tennis court is not ideal as the court lines and net are not the same dimensions as pickleball. Accordingly, it is difficult for fans of pickleball to conveniently find an acceptable pickleball court.
In view of the foregoing, it would be advantageous to provide a product that allows pickleball fans to play pickleball on a regulation sized court any of numerous locations when permanent pickleball court lines are not available. It would be particularly advantageous if such product was portable and capable of being played in driveways, streets, parking lots, or other locations with relatively flat and open hard surfaces, and particularly any locations associated with house parties, tailgating, or other social events.
A kit for constructing a sports court is disclosed herein. The kit comprises a plurality of tape lines, including longer lines that provide sidelines, medium length lines that provide baselines and kitchen lines, and shorter lines that provide service lines. Indicia are included on the tape lines for quick and convenient assembly of the sports court. Each tape line has one adhesive side and one slip-resistant side. In at least some embodiments, the kit further includes balls, paddles, rackets and/or a sports net. In at least some additional embodiments, the kit further includes a line gauge configured to measure the diagonal of a court assembled with the sports line kit.
In at least one embodiment, a kit for constructing a sports court includes a plurality of tape lines positioned in a package. The plurality of tape lines include sidelines having a first length, baselines and kitchen lines having a second length that is less than the first length, and service lines having a third length that is less than the second length. Each of the plurality of tape lines includes an adhesive first side with a peel-away backing and a second side opposite the first side. Indicia are included on the plurality of tape lines to indicate connection locations to other of the plurality of tape lines. A string line is also positioned in the package. The string line has a fourth length that is greater than the first length.
In at least one embodiment, a kit for constructing a sports court includes a package and a plurality of tape lines positioned in the package. The plurality of tape lines include sidelines having a first primary color, baselines having a second primary color, and service lines having a third primary color. Each of the plurality of tape lines includes an adhesive side and an opposite side. The plurality of sidelines include first indicia defined by the second primary color. The plurality of base lines include second indicia defined by the third primary color.
The above described features and advantages, as well as others, will become more readily apparent to those of ordinary skill in the art by reference to the following detailed description and accompanying drawings. While it would be desirable to provide a kit for constructing a sports court that provides one or more of these or other advantageous features, the teachings disclosed herein extend to those embodiments which fall within the scope of the eventually appended claims, regardless of whether they accomplish one or more of the above-mentioned advantages.
As shown in the figures, a sports court kit is provided as a pickleball line kit 10. The pickleball line kit 10 includes a plurality of tape lines 20 for a pickleball court, markings or other indicia on the tape lines, and instructions for installation of the tape lines 20 on a hard surface when no permanent court lines are available. The plurality of tape lines 20 include at least two elongated sidelines 30, two elongated baselines 40, two elongated kitchen lines 50, and two elongated serve lines 60. In at least some embodiments, the kit includes one or more of pickleball paddles 80, balls 82, and/or a pickleball net 90. All of the tape lines 20 (which may also be referred to herein as simply “tape”), have a similar width (e.g., 2 to 3 inches), but the sidelines 30, baselines 40/kitchen lines 50, and service lines 60 have different lengths and include different markings, as described in further detail herein.
With particular reference now to
Each tape line 20 is provided by an elongated length of peel-and-stick tape. One side of the peel-and-stick tape includes an adhesive material (i.e., a “peel-away backing”) and an opposite side of the peel-and-stick tape includes a slip-preventive surface. The adhesive material may be, for example, a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) with inherent stickiness, as are commonly known. PSAs are soft polymer blends such as those used in duct tapes and may be formed from materials such as rubber, acrylic and silicone, as will be recognized by those of skill in the art. The tape may be rolled or otherwise condensed to fit within the packaging for the kit 10. A releasable paper or other material may cover the adhesive material in order to make the tape easier to unroll. The slip-preventive surface on the tape line 20 may be provided by a gritty or tacky surface. Examples of tapes with anti-slip surfaces are commonly available and include tapes such as 3M Safety-Walk™ Slip Resistant Fine Resilient Tape and Gorilla Anti-Slip Tread Tape.
As shown in
The markings (i.e., the “B”, “K” and “N” markings) on each sideline 30 have a different color than the primary color of the sideline 30 (i.e., the “primary color” of the sideline 30 is the color that covers most of the slip-preventative surface of the tape, but the tape may also include other colors, as described herein, and particularly different colors for the “B”, “K” and “N” markings; additionally, it will be recognized that the word “primary” as used herein does not refer to the three primary colors known in the fields of art and science, or any other particular colors). The color of each marking corresponds to the color of the tape line intended to intersect the sideline at the marking. Therefore, in the exemplary embodiment of

Each baseline 40 may be between nineteen feet six inches and twenty feet in length. In the embodiment disclosed herein each baseline 40 is nineteen feet eight inches in length. This allows the baselines 40 to extend between opposing sidelines without extending past the sidelines. Each baseline 40 is primarily/mostly one color (e.g., red) that is the same color as the markings on the sidelines 30. Each baseline 40 includes one “S” mark positioned at a center location between the ends 42 of the baseline 40. The “S” marks indicate where the service line 60 should intersect the baseline 40. The “S” marking on each baseline 40 has a different color than the primary color of the baseline 40. The color of the “S” marking corresponds to the color of the tape line intended to intersect the baseline 40 at the “S” marking. Therefore, in the exemplary embodiment of
As noted previously, in at least one embodiment, the kitchen lines 50 are identical to the baselines 40. As a result, four identical tape lines of medium length are included in the kit 10. Because the kitchen lines 50 are identical to the baselines 40, the user may interchange the kitchen lines 50 and baselines 40 without the need to for distinguishing between the tape lines when installing the pickleball court on a surface. As described in further detail below, each baseline 40 and kitchen line 50 is configured to extend between either two “B” marks or two “K” marks on the opposing parallel sidelines 30.

In at least one embodiment, the kit 10 comprises additional components in addition to the tape lines 20 and assembly diagrams 70. For example, as shown in
As shown in
In at least one embodiment, each kit further includes a string line gauge 24, such as that illustrated in
A method 200 of creating a sports court is now described in association with the block diagram of
Next, as noted in block 220 of
After this, as noted in block 230, the user adds another section of tape line to the court, and particularly a first baseline 40, paying attention to couple the first baseline 40 to the correct position along the sideline (i.e., over the “B” marking), and paying attention to position the first baseline 40 at a right angle relative to the sideline 30. The string line 24 is particularly helpful in assisting the user in forming a right angle between the sideline 30 and the baseline 40 because the user can adjust the baseline 40 and the string line 24 until the two ends meet at the proper location. The user can then peel the backing from the baseline 40 and secure the baseline to the surface.
Next, as noted at block 240 of
After positioning the second sideline 30 on the court, the method continues with block 250, and the second baseline 40 is positioned on the court. The second baseline 40 is parallel to the first baseline and extends between the first and second sidelines on the opposite end of the court from the first baseline. At this point, the outer perimeter of the court is complete and forms a rectangle (i.e., with the first and second base lines 40 connecting the “B” markings on the sidelines 30). Again, the string line 24 may be used to confirm that the baselines 40 are perpendicular to the sidelines 30.
Next, as noted in block 260 of
After the base lines/kitchen lines 50 are positioned on the court, the method continues at block 270 of
It will be recognized that the contents of the pickleball line kit 10 are disposable and intended for short-term use. Common uses of the pickleball line kit 10 include use for playing pickleball in a driveway of a home, use for playing on a parking lot surface when camping or tailgating, and/or use for playing in a parking lot or at a local tennis court or basketball court that is not otherwise marked with pickleball court lines.
The foregoing detailed description of one or more embodiments of the court line kit has been presented herein by way of example only and not limitation. It will be recognized that there are advantages to certain individual features and functions described herein that may be obtained without incorporating other features and functions described herein. For example, while the kit has been described primarily for use in association with pickleball courts, it will be recognized that the kit could be easily configured to prepare other types of courts, such as tennis courts or volleyball courts. As another example, while different length tape lines have been disclosed herein as being different colors, in at least one alternative all of the tape lines have a same color, regardless of length. As yet another example, while the tape lines have been described in association with primary colors, in some embodiments, the tape lines may be defined by primary designs rather than colors (e.g., camouflage, polka-dots, etc.). In some embodiments, the tape lines may be fluorescent or have glow-in-the-dark features (e.g., a phosphor material that radiates visible light after being energized and has a relatively long persistence, such as fifteen to forty-five minutes). Two exemplary phosphors that provide glow-in-the-dark features include zinc sulfide and strontium aluminate. The glow-in-the-dark or fluorescent features allow the tapelines to be used in association with nighttime or black light pickle ball. In still another exemplary embodiment, the length of the tape lines may be different, such as sidelines, base lines, or kitchen lines that are split in to two or more sections such that the user only has to apply shorter lengths of tape in order to form the complete sports court. In yet another exemplary embodiment, the tape that provides the court lines may not include an adhesive on one side, but may be reusable; in this embodiment additional short lengths of tape with an adhesive backing is provided within the kit to allow the user to secure the non-stick court lines to a playing surface at various locations.
In addition to the foregoing, it will be recognized that various alternatives, modifications, variations, or improvements of the above-disclosed embodiments and other features and functions, or alternatives thereof, may be desirably combined into many other different embodiments, systems or applications. Presently unforeseen or unanticipated alternatives, modifications, variations, or improvements therein may be subsequently made by those skilled in the art which are also intended to be encompassed by any eventually appended claims. Therefore, the spirit and scope of any eventually appended claims should not be limited to the description of the embodiments contained herein.
