Description
FIELD

This application relates to the field of athletic equipment and particularly to equipment for constructing temporary sports courts.

BACKGROUND

Sporting games are popular pastimes for many people attending social gatherings, such as tailgating events, backyard barbeques, and any of various other parties. Examples of such sporting games include horseshoes, corn-hole, bocce, ladder toss and football toss. These games are popular, in part, because the game can be played in a relatively small space with multiple players.

Pickleball has become increasingly popular in the United States and is widely played by both serious and casual fans of the game. Pickleball is a racket or paddle sport in which two (singles) or four (doubles) players hit a perforated, hollow plastic ball with paddles over a relatively low (34-inch-high) net until one side is unable to return the ball or commits an infraction. While pickleball resembles tennis and table tennis, pickleball has specific rules, paddles and court dimensions. The pickleball paddle is larger than the one used in table tennis, but smaller than a tennis racket. The hard plastic ball used in pickleball produces less bounce than tennis balls.

Pickleball games are played on a dedicated pickleball court that is forty-four feet long and twenty feet wide. In instances where a dedicated pickleball court is unavailable, a tennis court is sometimes used as a substitute, but a tennis court is not ideal as the court lines and net are not the same dimensions as pickleball. Accordingly, it is difficult for fans of pickleball to conveniently find an acceptable pickleball court.

In view of the foregoing, it would be advantageous to provide a product that allows pickleball fans to play pickleball on a regulation sized court any of numerous locations when permanent pickleball court lines are not available. It would be particularly advantageous if such product was portable and capable of being played in driveways, streets, parking lots, or other locations with relatively flat and open hard surfaces, and particularly any locations associated with house parties, tailgating, or other social events.

DESCRIPTION

As shown in the figures, a sports court kit is provided as a pickleball line kit 10. The pickleball line kit 10 includes a plurality of tape lines 20 for a pickleball court, markings or other indicia on the tape lines, and instructions for installation of the tape lines 20 on a hard surface when no permanent court lines are available. The plurality of tape lines 20 include at least two elongated sidelines 30, two elongated baselines 40, two elongated kitchen lines 50, and two elongated serve lines 60. In at least some embodiments, the kit includes one or more of pickleball paddles 80, balls 82, and/or a pickleball net 90. All of the tape lines 20 (which may also be referred to herein as simply “tape”), have a similar width (e.g., 2 to 3 inches), but the sidelines 30, baselines 40/kitchen lines 50, and service lines 60 have different lengths and include different markings, as described in further detail herein.

With particular reference now to FIG. 1, the plurality of tape lines 20 for the pickleball line kit are shown. The tape lines 20 are pre-cut, pre-marked, and pre-measured peel and stick adhesive lines which include an adhesive on one side and a slip preventative surface on the other. The tape lines include two sidelines 30, two baselines 40, two kitchen lines 50, and two service lines 60 (which may also be referred to herein as “centerlines”). In the embodiment disclosed herein, the sidelines 30 are primarily a first color (e.g., blue), the baselines 40 and the kitchen lines 50 are primarily a second color (e.g., red), and the service lines 60 are primarily a third color (e.g., green). These color differences assist the user in quickly and easily distinguishing the different sections of tape lines 20 within the kit 10.

Each tape line 20 is provided by an elongated length of peel-and-stick tape. One side of the peel-and-stick tape includes an adhesive material (i.e., a “peel-away backing”) and an opposite side of the peel-and-stick tape includes a slip-preventive surface. The adhesive material may be, for example, a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) with inherent stickiness, as are commonly known. PSAs are soft polymer blends such as those used in duct tapes and may be formed from materials such as rubber, acrylic and silicone, as will be recognized by those of skill in the art. The tape may be rolled or otherwise condensed to fit within the packaging for the kit 10. A releasable paper or other material may cover the adhesive material in order to make the tape easier to unroll. The slip-preventive surface on the tape line 20 may be provided by a gritty or tacky surface. Examples of tapes with anti-slip surfaces are commonly available and include tapes such as 3M Safety-Walk™ Slip Resistant Fine Resilient Tape and Gorilla Anti-Slip Tread Tape.

As shown in FIG. 1, the sidelines 30 are the longest sections of tape line 20 within the kit 10. Each sideline 30 may be between forty-three feet six inches and forty-four feet in length (e.g., when the sports court is a pickleball court). In the embodiment disclosed herein, the each sideline 30 is forty-four (44) feet in length. Additionally, each sideline 30 is primarily/mostly one color (e.g., blue). Each sideline 30 further includes five markings 22 or other indicia, including a “B” mark at each end 32 of the sideline 30, a center “N” mark, and a “K” mark positioned between each “B” mark and the “N” mark. The “B” marks indicate where the baselines 40 will intersect the ends of the sidelines 30. The “K” marks are centered fifteen feet from the ends 32 of the side lines and indicate where the kitchen lines will intersect the sidelines 30. The “N” marks are at the center of each sideline 30 (i.e., centered twenty-two feet from the ends 32 of the side line) and indicate where the net will be positioned at the center of the sideline 30. The “N” mark is also centered seven feet from each “K” mark. It will be recognized that the word “indicia” as used herein references such markings or any other indicators or any other indicators on the tape intended to assist the user in arranging the court lines in a proper location in relation to one another.

The markings (i.e., the “B”, “K” and “N” markings) on each sideline 30 have a different color than the primary color of the sideline 30 (i.e., the “primary color” of the sideline 30 is the color that covers most of the slip-preventative surface of the tape, but the tape may also include other colors, as described herein, and particularly different colors for the “B”, “K” and “N” markings; additionally, it will be recognized that the word “primary” as used herein does not refer to the three primary colors known in the fields of art and science, or any other particular colors). The color of each marking corresponds to the color of the tape line intended to intersect the sideline at the marking. Therefore, in the exemplary embodiment of FIG. 1, the “B” and “K” markings have a red color to indicate that the red baselines 40 and red kitchen lines 50 intersect the blue sideline 30 at these markings. Each marking is generally rectangular, and particularly square in shape, such that the rectangular ends of the red baselines 40 and red kitchen lines 50 may be quickly and easily intersected and perpendicularly aligned with the sidelines 30. Although the sidelines 30 and associated markings (“B”, “K” and “N”) have been disclosed herein as having a particular color (e.g., blue with red markings) and shape (e.g., square shaped), it will be recognized that other embodiments are anticipated. For example, in other embodiments, the colors of the sidelines 30 and shape of the markings may be different. In at least some embodiments, the sideline 30 and markings are not distinguished from any other tape lines 20 by color, and are instead a black-and-white or neutral coloration with associated markings. In yet other embodiments the markings or other indicia may be provided by designs or physical non-conformities in the tape (e.g., thinner line sections, different backing material, etc.).

With continued reference to FIG. 1, the baselines 40 and the kitchen lines 50 are the intermediate/medium length sections of tape line 20 within the kit 10. Conveniently, the baselines 40 and kitchen lines are identical in size, shape and markings. While the baselines 40 are described in the following paragraph, it will be recognized that the kitchen lines 50 are identical to the baselines 40. However, in at least some embodiments, the kitchen lines 50 may be different from the baselines. For example, the kitchen lines may have a different primary color than the baselines, or may be split into multiple sections (e.g., a first section that extends from one sideline to the service line, and a second section that extends from the services line to the opposite sideline).

Each baseline 40 may be between nineteen feet six inches and twenty feet in length. In the embodiment disclosed herein each baseline 40 is nineteen feet eight inches in length. This allows the baselines 40 to extend between opposing sidelines without extending past the sidelines. Each baseline 40 is primarily/mostly one color (e.g., red) that is the same color as the markings on the sidelines 30. Each baseline 40 includes one “S” mark positioned at a center location between the ends 42 of the baseline 40. The “S” marks indicate where the service line 60 should intersect the baseline 40. The “S” marking on each baseline 40 has a different color than the primary color of the baseline 40. The color of the “S” marking corresponds to the color of the tape line intended to intersect the baseline 40 at the “S” marking. Therefore, in the exemplary embodiment of FIG. 1, the “S” marking has a green color to indicate that the green service line 60 will intersect the baseline 40 at this markings. Again, the “S” marking is generally rectangular, and particularly square in shape, such that a rectangular end of the green service line 60 may be quickly and easily intersected and perpendicularly aligned with the baseline 40. Although the baselines 40 and associated markings (“S”) have been disclosed herein as having a particular color (e.g., red with green markings) and shape (e.g., square shaped), it will be recognized that other embodiments are anticipated. For example, in other embodiments, the colors and markings of the baselines 40 may be different. In at least some embodiments, the baseline 40 and markings are not distinguished from any other tape lines 20 by color, and are instead a black-and-white or neutral coloration with associated markings.

As noted previously, in at least one embodiment, the kitchen lines 50 are identical to the baselines 40. As a result, four identical tape lines of medium length are included in the kit 10. Because the kitchen lines 50 are identical to the baselines 40, the user may interchange the kitchen lines 50 and baselines 40 without the need to for distinguishing between the tape lines when installing the pickleball court on a surface. As described in further detail below, each baseline 40 and kitchen line 50 is configured to extend between either two “B” marks or two “K” marks on the opposing parallel sidelines 30.

With continued reference to FIG. 1, the service lines 60 are the shortest sections of tape line 20 in the kit 10. Each service line 60 may be between fourteen feet six inches and fifteen feet in length. In the embodiment disclosed herein, the service lines 60 are fourteen feet ten inches in length, and are primarily one color (e.g., green) that is the same color as the “K” markings on the baselines 40 and the kitchen lines 50. As described in further detail below, each service line 60 is configured to extend between an “S’ mark on a baseline 40 and an “S” mark on a kitchen line 50. Although the service lines 60 have been disclosed herein as having a particular color (e.g., green), it will be recognized that other embodiments are anticipated. For example, in other embodiments, the color of the service line 50 may be different.

With reference now to FIG. 2, the kit 10 further includes a first page of assembly diagrams 70 which illustrates a plan view of arrangement of the tape lines 20 in order to construct a pickleball court. The assembly diagrams 70 provide a convenient visual instruction sheet indicating that the two sidelines 30 should extend parallel to one another along the length of the court. The assembly diagrams 70 also show that the two baselines 40 should extend perpendicular to the sidelines 30 between the “B” markings on opposite ends of the sidelines 30, and the two kitchen lines 50 should extend perpendicular to the sidelines between the two “K” markings on opposite sides of the sidelines 30. The assembly diagram further shows that the two service lines 60 should extend between the respective “S” markings on the baseline 40 and the kitchen line 50 on opposite sides of the court. Furthermore, a net 90 should extend perpendicularly between the two sidelines 30 between the “N” markings on opposite sidelines.

FIG. 3 shows a second page of the assembly diagram illustrating a perspective view of a completed pickleball court. As shown in the figure, the pickleball court includes a net 90 that divides the court into two sides. The court includes sidelines 30, baselines 40, kitchen lines 50, and service lines 60.

In at least one embodiment, the kit 10 comprises additional components in addition to the tape lines 20 and assembly diagrams 70. For example, as shown in FIG. 4, in at least one embodiment, the kit 10 further includes two pickleball paddles 80, and three balls 82. In at least one additional embodiment, the kit 10 further includes a portable pickleball net 90, including a collapsible frame 92 configured to hold flexible netting 94. The collapsible frame 92 is comprised of a plurality of plastic or fiberglass rods that are held together by mounting hubs. The netting 94 is retained in place by the collapsible frame. The portable net 90 is generally between nineteen and twenty-one feet in length. As discussed above, the portable net 90 extends between the two “N” markings on the opposing sidelines 30.

As shown in FIG. 6, the kit 10 is conveniently provided in a single package 100. The package 100 may be, for example, a cardboard or plastic box, or a plastic bag. Different versions of the kit may be made available for users. In a first “basic” embodiment, the kit 10 includes only the tape lines 20 of FIG. 1 and the assembly diagrams 70 of FIGS. 2 and 3. In a “standard” embodiment, the kit 10 includes the tape lines 20, the assembly diagrams 70, and paddles 80 and balls 82, such as those shown in FIGS. 1-4. In a “pro” embodiment, the kit 10 includes the tape lines 20, the assembly diagrams 70, and the net 90, such as that shown in FIGS. 1-3 and 5. In a “deluxe” embodiment, the kit 10 includes the tape lines 20, the assembly diagrams 70, the paddles 80 and balls 82, and the net 90, such as that shown in FIGS. 1-5.

In at least one embodiment, each kit further includes a string line gauge 24, such as that illustrated in FIG. 7. The string line gauge 24 (which may also be referred to herein as simply a “string line” is simply a length of string, cord, cable, rope, wire, tape, or other elongated material that is configured to provide the user with the exact dimensions between opposite corners of the sports court when fully constructed. For example, in the embodiment where the sports court is a pickleball court, the string line may be about forty-eight and one-third (48⅓) feet in length, since this is the length of the hypotenuse of the right triangle formed by one sideline 30, one baseline 40 and the hypotenuse connecting the end of the one sideline to the one baseline. In other words, if the length of the sideline 30 is “a”, the length of the baseline 40 is “b”, and the length of the hypotenuse extending between opposite corners of the sports court is “c”, the length of “c” may be determined using the Pythagorean theorem: a2+b2=c2 (i.e., 442+202=c2, so c=48.33). The string line 24 may be advantageously used during assembly of the sports court in order to ensure that the sidelines 30 and baselines 20 are being formed as close to perpendicular as possible.

A method 200 of creating a sports court is now described in association with the block diagram of FIG. 8, and the associated illustrations of FIGS. 2 and 7. In operation, a user with the kit 10 in hand first identifies a desired location for a pickleball court to be constructed (e.g., a hard surface such as a driveway or parking lot). Then as noted in block 210 of FIG. 8, the user unpacks the contents of the kit 10 from the package 100 containing the kit (e.g., a plastic bag or cardboard box holding all contents of the kit). The user then lays out all of the tape lines 20 at the general desired location for the pickleball court, as illustrated in FIG. 2.

Next, as noted in block 220 of FIG. 8, the user peels back the adhesive backing from one of the tape lines, and specifically one of the sidelines 30 and adheres the adhesive side of the tape line to the desired surface location.

After this, as noted in block 230, the user adds another section of tape line to the court, and particularly a first baseline 40, paying attention to couple the first baseline 40 to the correct position along the sideline (i.e., over the “B” marking), and paying attention to position the first baseline 40 at a right angle relative to the sideline 30. The string line 24 is particularly helpful in assisting the user in forming a right angle between the sideline 30 and the baseline 40 because the user can adjust the baseline 40 and the string line 24 until the two ends meet at the proper location. The user can then peel the backing from the baseline 40 and secure the baseline to the surface.

Next, as noted at block 240 of FIG. 8, the user peels the adhesive backing from second sideline 30 and positions the second sideline at a right angle at the indicated location on the first baseline 40. Once again, the string line 24 may be used to confirm that right angle between the first baseline 40 and the second sideline 30 is precise and accurate, and that the second sideline 30 is properly positioned on the court (i.e., parallel to the first sideline).

After positioning the second sideline 30 on the court, the method continues with block 250, and the second baseline 40 is positioned on the court. The second baseline 40 is parallel to the first baseline and extends between the first and second sidelines on the opposite end of the court from the first baseline. At this point, the outer perimeter of the court is complete and forms a rectangle (i.e., with the first and second base lines 40 connecting the “B” markings on the sidelines 30). Again, the string line 24 may be used to confirm that the baselines 40 are perpendicular to the sidelines 30.

Next, as noted in block 260 of FIG. 8, the user continues assembly of the sports court by peeling the adhesive backing from third and fourth baselines/kitchen lines 50 and positioning the third and fourth base lines/kitchen lines at indicated locations extending between the first and second sidelines 30 (i.e., the third and fourth base lines/kitchen lines 50 connecting the “K” markings on the sidelines 30).

After the base lines/kitchen lines 50 are positioned on the court, the method continues at block 270 of FIG. 8. At this point, the user peels the adhesive backing from the serviced lines 60 and positions the services lines at indicated locations extending between the center of the base lines 40 and the kitchen lines 50 (i.e., the service lines 60 connecting the “S” markings on the baselines 40). At this point, the sports court is set up with all court lines in place for a pickleball court. As discussed above, the long forty-four foot tape lines create the sidelines 30, the four nineteen-foot eight-inch medium tape lines (marked B and K in FIG. 2) create the two baselines 40 and two kitchen lines 50, and the two nine-foot ten-inch short tape lines (marked S in FIG. 2) create the two center lines that act as serve lines. It will be recognized that the kit includes each of the required tape lines 20 for the sports court as pre-cut and pre-measured tape lines with an adhesive backing. The tape lines 20 are also marked to assist the user with proper placement of the net, serve line, kitchen line, and baselines. This allows for construction of a court without any need for a measuring tape. Once all of the tape lines 20 have been adhered to the court surface, the user positions the net 90 on the court between the “N” markings on the opposing sidelines 30. With these steps completed, the pickleball court is in position and ready for play using the pickleball paddles 80 and balls 82.

It will be recognized that the contents of the pickleball line kit 10 are disposable and intended for short-term use. Common uses of the pickleball line kit 10 include use for playing pickleball in a driveway of a home, use for playing on a parking lot surface when camping or tailgating, and/or use for playing in a parking lot or at a local tennis court or basketball court that is not otherwise marked with pickleball court lines.

The foregoing detailed description of one or more embodiments of the court line kit has been presented herein by way of example only and not limitation. It will be recognized that there are advantages to certain individual features and functions described herein that may be obtained without incorporating other features and functions described herein. For example, while the kit has been described primarily for use in association with pickleball courts, it will be recognized that the kit could be easily configured to prepare other types of courts, such as tennis courts or volleyball courts. As another example, while different length tape lines have been disclosed herein as being different colors, in at least one alternative all of the tape lines have a same color, regardless of length. As yet another example, while the tape lines have been described in association with primary colors, in some embodiments, the tape lines may be defined by primary designs rather than colors (e.g., camouflage, polka-dots, etc.). In some embodiments, the tape lines may be fluorescent or have glow-in-the-dark features (e.g., a phosphor material that radiates visible light after being energized and has a relatively long persistence, such as fifteen to forty-five minutes). Two exemplary phosphors that provide glow-in-the-dark features include zinc sulfide and strontium aluminate. The glow-in-the-dark or fluorescent features allow the tapelines to be used in association with nighttime or black light pickle ball. In still another exemplary embodiment, the length of the tape lines may be different, such as sidelines, base lines, or kitchen lines that are split in to two or more sections such that the user only has to apply shorter lengths of tape in order to form the complete sports court. In yet another exemplary embodiment, the tape that provides the court lines may not include an adhesive on one side, but may be reusable; in this embodiment additional short lengths of tape with an adhesive backing is provided within the kit to allow the user to secure the non-stick court lines to a playing surface at various locations.

In addition to the foregoing, it will be recognized that various alternatives, modifications, variations, or improvements of the above-disclosed embodiments and other features and functions, or alternatives thereof, may be desirably combined into many other different embodiments, systems or applications. Presently unforeseen or unanticipated alternatives, modifications, variations, or improvements therein may be subsequently made by those skilled in the art which are also intended to be encompassed by any eventually appended claims. Therefore, the spirit and scope of any eventually appended claims should not be limited to the description of the embodiments contained herein.
