DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

The invention is described more fully hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which embodiments of the invention are shown. This invention may, however, be embodied in many different forms and should not be construed as limited to the embodiments set forth herein. Rather, these embodiments are provided so that this disclosure will be thorough and complete, and will fully convey the scope of the invention to those skilled in the art. In the drawings, the size and relative sizes of layers and regions may be exaggerated for clarity.

It will be understood that when an element or layer is referred to as being “on”, “connected to” or “coupled to” another element or layer, it can be directly on, connected or coupled to the other element or layer or intervening elements or layers may be present. In contrast, when an element is referred to as being “directly on,” “directly connected to” or “directly coupled to” another element or layer, there are no intervening elements or layers present. Like numbers refer to like elements throughout. As used herein, the term “and/or” includes any and all combinations of one or more of the associated listed items.

It will be understood that, although the terms first, second, third etc. may be used herein to describe various elements, components, regions, layers and/or sections, these elements, components, regions, layers and/or sections should not be limited by these terms. These terms are only used to distinguish one element, component, region, layer or section from another element, component, region, layer or section. Thus, a first element, component, region, layer or section discussed below could be termed a second element, component, region, layer or section without departing from the teachings of the present invention.

Spatially relative terms, such as “beneath,” “below”, “lower”, “above”, “upper” and the like, may be used herein for ease of description to describe one element or feature's relationship to another element(s) or feature(s) as illustrated in the figures. It will be understood that the spatially relative terms are intended to encompass different orientations of the device in use or operation in addition to the orientation depicted in the figures. For example, if the device in the figures is turned over, elements described as “below” or “beneath” other elements or features would then be oriented “above” the other elements or features. Thus, the exemplary term “below” can encompass both an orientation of above and below. The device may be otherwise oriented (rotated 90 degrees or at other orientations) and the spatially relative descriptors used herein interpreted accordingly.

The terminology used herein is for the purpose of describing particular embodiments only and is not intended to be limiting of the invention. As used herein, the singular forms “a,” “an” and “the” are intended to include the plural forms as well, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise. It will be further understood that the terms “comprises” and/or “comprising,” when used in this specification, specify the presence of stated features, integers, steps, operations, elements, and/or components, but do not preclude the presence or addition of one or more other features, integers, steps, operations, elements, components, and/or groups thereof.

Embodiments of the invention are described herein with reference to cross-section illustrations that are schematic illustrations of idealized embodiments (and intermediate structures) of the invention. As such, variations from the shapes of the illustrations as a result, for example, of manufacturing techniques and/or tolerances, are to be expected. Thus, embodiments of the invention should not be construed as limited to the particular shapes of regions illustrated herein but are to include deviations in shapes that result, for example, from manufacturing. For example, an implanted region illustrated as a rectangle will, typically, have rounded or curved features and/or a gradient of implant concentration at its edges rather than a binary change from implanted to non-implanted region. Likewise, a buried region formed by implantation may result in some implantation in the region between the buried region and the surface through which the implantation takes place. Thus, the regions illustrated in the figures are schematic in nature and their shapes are not intended to illustrate the actual shape of a region of a device and are not intended to limit the scope of the invention.

Unless otherwise defined, all terms (including technical and scientific terms) used herein have the same meaning as commonly understood by one of ordinary skill in the art to which this invention belongs. It will be further understood that terms, such as those defined in commonly used dictionaries, should be interpreted as having a meaning that is consistent with their meaning in the context of the relevant art and will not be interpreted in an idealized or overly formal sense unless expressly so defined herein.

Hereinafter, the present invention will be explained in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings.

Covering Member in Display Device

FIG. 1 is a perspective view illustrating an exemplary covering member for an exemplary display device in accordance with an exemplary embodiment of the present invention. FIG. 2 is an enlarged perspective view illustrating an exemplary contact part of the exemplary covering member for the exemplary display device in FIG. 1. A covering member 70 for a display device covers at least portions of front and rear surfaces of the display device having a display panel and a backlight assembly emitting light into the display panel.

Referring to FIGS. 1 and 2, the covering member 70 for the display device fixes the display panel to a bottom chassis receiving the backlight assembly. The covering member 70 for the display device includes metal that has sufficient rigidity. The covering member 70 includes a supporting part 71, a sidewall part 72 and a plurality of contact parts 80.

An effective display area and a peripheral area surrounding the effective display area are defined on the display panel. The supporting part 71 covers the peripheral area. The shape of the supporting part 71 corresponds to the shape of the display panel. For example, the supporting part 71 has a substantially rectangular shape, although other shapes are within the scope of these embodiments.

The sidewall part 72 is extended from the supporting part 71 along sides of the display panel. The sidewall part 72 is combined with a middle mold frame of the display device or a sidewall part of the bottom chassis. The sidewall part 72 includes first, second, third, and fourth side walls 73, 75, 77, and 79.

The first, second, third, and fourth sidewalls 73, 75, 77, and 79 are respectively extended from four edges of the supporting part 71. The first, second, third, and fourth sidewalls 73, 75, 77, and 79 are substantially in perpendicular to the supporting part 71. Therefore, the supporting part 71 and sidewall part 72 form a receiving space for receiving the display panel.

An opening 74 is formed in at least one of the first, second, third, and fourth side walls 73, 75, 77, and 79. For example, two openings 74 are formed in the first sidewall 73, although an alternate number of openings may be formed in any of the sidewalls. The openings 74 are formed between an upper portion of the sidewall part 72 connected to the supporting part 71 and a lower portion of the sidewall part 72 facing the upper portion. The contact parts 80 may be extended from an upper edge of the opening 74 adjacent to the upper portion of the sidewall part 72 or may alternatively be extended from a lower edge of the opening 74 adjacent to the lower portion of the sidewall part 72.

In FIGS. 1 and 2, the contact parts 80 are, by example, extended from the lower edge of the opening 74. The contact parts 80 are inclined with respect to the first sidewall 73, and are bent for a plurality of times to face the first sidewall 73. In another embodiment, the contact parts 80 may be extended from the upper edge of the opening 74.

FIG. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken along line I-l′ of the exemplary covering member for the exemplary display device in FIG. 1.

Referring to FIGS. 2 and 3, each of the contact parts 80 includes a supporting protrusion 81, a contact protrusion 83, and a guide protrusion 85. The supporting protrusion 81 is inclined with respect to the sidewall part 72, and is extended to an interior of the receiving space defined by the supporting part 71 and the sidewall part 72. The contact protrusion 83 is extended from the supporting protrusion 81 towards the supporting part 71 and substantially in parallel with the first sidewall 73. The guide protrusion 85 is extended from the contact protrusion 83 towards the first sidewall part 73, and is inclined with respect to the first sidewall 73.

The covering member 70 makes contact with another component of the display device, for example, the bottom chassis through the contact parts 80. The bottom chassis includes metal having electrically conductive characteristics, so that the covering member 70 and the bottom chassis are connected physically and electrically via the contact parts 80. Therefore, the static charge and the electromagnetic wave applied to the covering member 70 or the static charge and the electromagnetic wave applied to the bottom chassis are grounded so that a display quality deterioration of the display panel and damage of the circuit devices are prevented.

The contact parts 80 are integrally formed with the sidewall part 72, so that the covering member 70 may be electrically grounded to another component such as the bottom chassis. Moreover, each of the contact parts 80 is bent for a plurality of times, and makes contact with another component. Each of the contact parts 80 has an elastic structure to be resistant to deformation and to recover after the deformation. Moreover, the contact protrusion 83 of the contact part 80 makes contact with other components, and a contact area between the contact part 80 and the other component increases. The number of contact parts 80 provided within each opening 74 may vary depending on a size of the display device. Also, the contact parts 80 may be separated from each other by spaces to further ensure contact of the contact parts 80 of the covering member 70 with a surface of another component.

FIG. 4 is a perspective view illustrating an exemplary covering member for an exemplary display device in accordance with another exemplary embodiment of the present invention. FIG. 5 is an enlarged perspective view illustrating an exemplary contact part of the exemplary covering member for an exemplary display device in FIG. 4.

Referring to FIGS. 4 and 5, a covering member 150 for a display device receives a backlight assembly. The covering member 150 for the display device includes metal that has sufficient rigidity, and includes a supporting part 151, a sidewall part 152 and a plurality of contact parts 140.

The backlight assembly is disposed in the supporting part 151. The supporting part 151 covers at least portions of a rear surface of the backlight assembly. The sidewall part 152 is extended from an edge of the supporting part 151 along a side surface of the backlight assembly. The supporting part 151 has a substantially rectangular shape, although other shapes are within the scope of these embodiments. The sidewall part 152 includes first, second, third, and fourth sidewalls 153, 155, 157, and 159 extended from four edges of the supporting part 151. The first, second, third, and fourth sidewalls 153, 155, 157, and 159 are substantially perpendicular to the supporting part 151. Therefore, the supporting part 151 and sidewall part 152 form a receiving space receiving the backlight assembly.

The contact parts 140 are extended from the sidewall part 152. The contact parts 140 are bent for a plurality of times, and are protruded from outside of the receiving space defined by the supporting part 151 and sidewall part 152. That is, the contact parts 140 are protruded away from the receiving space defined by the supporting part 151 and sidewall part 152. The covering member 150 for the display device makes contact with other components of the display device, for example, a top chassis covering the display panel through the contact parts 140. The top chassis includes metal having electrical conductivity. Therefore, the covering member 150 for the display device and the top chassis are physically and electrically connected via the contact parts 140.

Therefore, the static charge and the electromagnetic wave applied to the covering member 150 or the top chassis are grounded, and display quality deterioration of the display panel and damage of the circuit devices by the static electricity and the electromagnetic waves are prevented.

The contact parts 140 are formed on at least one of the first, second, third, and fourth sidewalls 153, 155, 157, and 159. For example only, the contact parts 140 are formed in the first sidewall 153. An opening 154 is formed in the first sidewall 153. The contact parts 140 are extended from an edge of the opening 154. A plurality of the openings 154 having the contact parts 140 may be formed on the first sidewall 153. For example, two openings 154 are formed in the first sidewall 153, however an alternate number of openings may be formed on any of the first, second, third, and fourth sidewalls 153, 155, 157, and 159.

FIG. 6 is a cross-sectional view taken along line II-II′ of the exemplary covering member for the exemplary display device in FIG. 4.

Referring to FIGS. 5 and 6, the opening 154 includes a lower edge adjacent to the supporting part 151 and an upper edge facing the lower edge. The contact parts 140 may be extended from the upper edge or the lower edge of the opening 154. As illustrated, the contact parts 140 may be extended from the upper edge of the opening 154.

Each of the contact parts 140 includes a supporting protrusion 141, a contact protrusion 143, and a guide protrusion 145. The supporting protrusion 141 is extended from the upper edge to an exterior of the receiving space in an inclined direction with respect to the first sidewall 153. The contact protrusion 143 is extended from the supporting protrusion 141 toward the supporting part 151 substantially in parallel with the first sidewall 153. The guide protrusion 145 is extended from the contact protrusion 143 toward the first sidewall 153 in an inclined direction with respect to the first sidewall 153.

The number of contact parts 140 provided within each opening 154 may vary depending on a size of the display device. Also, the contact parts 140 may be separated from each other by spaces to further ensure contact of the contact parts 140 of the covering member 150 with a surface of another component.

For example, the second supporting part 571 covers the peripheral area of the display panel 510. Hereinafter, the second covering member 570 will be referred to as the ‘top chassis’.

The second sidewall 572 is extended from the second supporting part 571 along the first sidewall part of the bottom chassis 550. The second sidewall part 572 includes first, second, third, and fourth sidewalls 573, 575, 577, and 579 corresponding to the first, second, third, and fourth sidewalls 553, 555, 557 and 559 of the first sidewall part of the bottom chassis 550. The contact member 519 disposed at the PCB 515 contacts an inside upper portion of the first sidewall 573. Moreover, two openings 574 for the contact parts 580 are formed at the lower portion of the first sidewall 573, although an alternate number of openings and openings within alternate sidewalls of the second sidewall part 572 would also be within the scope of these embodiments.

The contact parts 580 are extended from the edge of the opening 574 in the first sidewall 573 of the top chassis 570 toward the first sidewall 553 of the bottom chassis 550. Each contact part 580 is bent for a plurality of times, and contacts the first sidewall 553. The contact part 580 includes a supporting protrusion 581, a contact protrusion 583, and a guide protrusion 585.

The supporting protrusion 581 is inclined with respect to the first sidewall 573 of the top chassis 570, and is extended from the lower edge of the opening 574 toward the first sidewall 553. The contact protrusion 583 is extended from the supporting protrusion 581 substantially parallel with the first sidewall 573, and contacts the first sidewall 553. The guide protrusion 585 is extended from the contact protrusion 583 towards the first sidewall 573, and is inclined with respect to the first sidewall 553.

When the second sidewall part 572 of the top chassis 570 is combined with the combining part 563 of the middle mold frame 560, the bottom chassis 550 and the top chassis 570 contact each other through the contact parts 580. When the second sidewall part 572 of the top chassis 570 is combined with the first sidewall part of the bottom chassis 550, the contact parts 580 increase a contact area between the bottom chassis 550 and the top chassis 570.

Therefore, the static charge and the electromagnetic wave generated from the backlight assembly 520 and the PCB 515 or the static charge and the electromagnetic wave applied to the display device 500 from an exterior of the display device 500 are electrically grounded, and the display quality deterioration of the display panel 510 and the damage of the circuit devices by the static charge and the electromagnetic wave are prevented.
