Claims
- 1. Crane apparatus comprising a trolley means for supporting said trolley for transverse movement to a plurality of locations; means for moving said trolley transversely to said locations, said means being controllable from a fixed control location remote with respect to said trolley; a plurality of indicia means offset from the trolley and designating a plurality of predetermined locations corresponding to locations at each of which an object may be located, each of said indicia means being remote from said fixed control location and designating a location at which the trolley is to be located to position an object at a selected location; television camera means mounted on the trolley and adapted to scan in a direction directed transversely of the direction of movement of the trolley and adapted to view any selected one of said indicia means when the trolley is at the location designated by said indicia means; and monitor means at said fixed control location for viewing the scene viewed by said television camera means on the trolley to determine when the trolley is properly located to position an object at a selected object location.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 in which said means for supporting said trolley comprises elongated track means; elongated bridge means adapted to travel along said track means in a direction longitudinally of said track means; and means on said bridge means supporting said trolley for movement longitudinally of said bridge means and in a direction transverse to the direction of travel of said bridge means on said track means.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1 comprising means for holding an object to be lifted by said trolley, and hoist means on said trolley for raising and lowering said holding means.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3 in which said holding means is adapted to grasp a peripheral edge of an object.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 3 in which said hoist means is adapted to raise and lower said holding means so that said holding means is at all times in the same transverse location relative to said trolley means and moves in an essentially vertical path that is essentially fixed relative to said trolley means.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5 in which said holding means includes television camera means directed downwardly to view the object to be held by said holding means coaxially with said vertical path of movement of said holding means.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 6 in which said holding means is grasping means adapted to grasp the upper portion of an object that has a top that is generally horizontal, and in which said downwardly directed television camera means has indicia at its lens which when compared with markings on the object top enable the distance between said grasping means and the object top to be determined as said grasping means approaches the object, said apparatus also including television monitor means by which the scene viewed by said downwardly facing television camera means can be viewed, said monitor means being at a fixed location remote with respect to said trolley.
- 8. Crane apparatus comprising a trolley; means for supporting said trolley for transverse movement to a variety of locations, said means comprising elongated track means, elongated bridge means adapted to travel along said track means in a direction longitudinally of said track means, and means on said bridge means supporting said trolley for movement longitudinally of said bridge means and in a direction transverse to the direction of travel of said bridge means on said track means; means for holding an object to be lifted by said trolley; hoist means on said trolley for raising and lowering said holding means; means for driving said bridge means on said track means; means for driving said trolley on said bridge means; and means for driving said hoisting means; each of said driving means comprising two separate independently energizable driving means so that failure of one will not prevent driving by the other, and in at least one of said driving means for said bridge means, said trolley means, and said hoist means, said two independently energizable driving means are adapted to drive the driven means at substantially different speeds.
- 9. Crane apparatus comprising a trolley, means for supporting said trolley for transverse movement to a variety of locations, said means comprising elongated track means, elongated bridge means adapted to travel along said track means in a direction longitudinally of said track means, and means on said bridge means supporting said trolley for movement longitudinally of said bridge means and in a direction transverse to the direction of travel of said bridge means on said track means; grab means for holding an object to be lifted by said trolley; hoist means on said trolley for raising and lowering said grab means; means for driving said bridge means on said track means and for driving said trolley on said bridge means to move the trolley to a variety of locations, said last-named means being controllable from a fixed control location remote with respect to said trolley; indicia means designating a plurality of fixed locations at which the trolley is to be located; means carried by the trolley for indicating at said fixed control location the position of the trolley relative to any selected one of said indicia means, means at said fixed control location for controlling the movement of the trolley in accordance with its position relative to the indicia means as indicated by said indicating means, television camera means carried by said grab means and directed downwardly to view the object to be lifted by said grab means, and television monitor means at said fixed control location for viewing the scene viewed by said television camera to determine when the grab means is properly located to pick up said object.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9 in which said grab means comprises a main frame supported by said hoist means, a rotatable subframe mounted on said main frame to rotate about a substantially vertical axis, gripping means spaced around the periphery of said subframe for grasping the peripheral portions of a drum, and means for rotating said subframe relative to the main frame; and in which apparatus said television camera means indiciates at said fixed control location when the gripping means are in proper positions for hoisting.
- 11. Crane apparatus comprising a trolley; means for supporting said trolley for transverse movement to a variety of predetermined locations; means for moving said trolley to said predetermined locations, grab means for holding an object to be lifted, hoist means on said trolley for raising and lowering said grab means in an essentially fixed essentially vertical path relative to said trolley, television camera means carried by said grab means and directed downwardly to view the object to be lifted by said grab means, and television monitor means located at a fixed control location remote relative to said trolley for viewing the scene viewed by said television camera means to determine when the grab means is properly located to pick up said object.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 11 in which a plurality of indicia means are provided for designating a plurality of locations at which said trolley is to be located, means are provided for indicating the position of the trolley relative to any selected one of said indicia means, and means are provided at said fixed control location for controlling the movement of the trolley in accordance with its position relative to said selected indicia means as indicated by said means for indicating the position of said trolley.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 12 in which said means for indicating the position of the trolley comprises television camera means mounted on the trolley and adapted to scan in a direction directed transversely of the direction of movement of the trolley and adapted to view said indicia means.
- 14. Crane apparatus comprising a trolley; means for supporting said trolley for transverse movement to a variety of locations, said means comprising elongated track means, elongated bridge means adapted to travel along said track means in a direction longitudinally of said track means, and means on said bridge means supporting said trolley for movement longitudinally of said bridge means and in a direction transverse to the direction of travel of said bridge means on said track means; grab means for holding an object to be lifted by said trolley; hoist means on said trolley for raising and lowering said grab means in an essentially fixed path relative to said trolley; means for driving said bridge means on said track means and for driving said trolley on said bridge means to move the trolley to a variety of locations, said last-named means being controllable from a fixed control location remote with respect to the trolley; a plurality of indicia means designating a plurality of locations at which the trolley is to be located; trolley indicator means carried by the trolley and associated with means at said fixed control location for indicating the position of the trolley relative to said indicia means; means at said fixed control location for controlling the movement of the trolley in accordance with its position relative to the indicia means as indicated by said trolley indicator means; grab indicator means for indicating the elevation of the grab; and means at said fixed control location for controlling said hoist means in accordance with the elevation indicated by said grab indicator means.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 8 in which, in each of the driving means for said bridge means on said track means, the driving means for said trolley on said bridge means, and the driving means for said hoist means, said two independently energizable driving means are adapted to operate at substantially different speeds.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 8 in which, in said means for driving said bridge means on said track means, said two independently energizable driving means are adapted to drive said bridge means at substantially different speeds.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 8 in which, in said means for driving said trolley on said bridge means, said two independently energizable driving means are adapted to drive said trolley at substantially different speeds.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 8 in which, in said means for driving said hoist means, said two independently energizable driving means are adapted to drive said hoisting means at substantially different speeds.
- 19. Crane apparatus comprising a trolley, hoisting means on said trolley, and holding means adapted to be raised and lowered on said trolley, said hoisting means comprising at least three cables connected to said holding means at locations thereon to prevent tilting of said holding means, said hoisting means including means for raising and lowering all of said cables at an equal rate while keeping said cables at all times in their same transverse locations relative to said trolley, means for determining when said cables are slack when said holding means is contacting an object below it, said holding means comprising actuatable means for grasping an object, said means for determining when said cables are slack preventing release of said actuatable means only when said cables are slack.
- 20. The apparatus of claim 19 in which said three cables are wound in the same direction.
- 21. The apparatus of claim 19 in which said three cables are mounted on a common drum which is movable axially.
- 22. Crane apparatus comprising a trolley, hoisting means on said trolley, and holding means adapted to be raised and lowered by said hoisting means, said hoisting means comprising three cables mounted on a common drum and connected to said holding means at locations thereon to prevent tilting of said holding means, said hoisting means including means for raising and lowering all said cables at an equal rate while keeping said cables at all times in their same transverse locations relative to said trolley and while causing said holding means to move in an essentially vertical path essentially fixed relative to said trolley, and means for determining when said cables are slack when said holding means is contacting an object below it, said holding means comprising actuatable means for grasping an object.
- 23. Crane apparatus comprising a trolley; means for supporting said trolley for transverse movement to a variety of locations; means for moving said trolley transversely to said locations, said means being controllable from a remote location with respect to the trolley; indicia means offset from the trolley designating at least one location at which the trolley is to be located; television camera means mounted on the trolley and adapted to scan in a direction directed transversely of the direction of movement of the trolley and adapted to view said indicia means when the trolley is at the location designated by said indicia means; monitor means at said remote location for reviewing the scene viewed by said television camera means on the trolley to determine when the trolley is properly located; means for holding an object to be lifted by said trolley; hoist means on said trolley for raising and lowering said holding means, said holding means including television camera means directed downwardly to view the object to be held by said holding means and being adapted to grasp an object that has a top that is generally horizontal, said downwardly directed television camera means having indicia at its lens which when compared with markings on the object top enable the distance between the holding means and the object top to be determined as the grasping means approaches the object; and television monitor means by which the scene viewed by said downwardly facing television camera can be viewed.
- 24. The apparatus of claim 23 in which said last-named television camera means views the position of the grasping means when it is in engagement with said object to determine when said grasping means is properly located to pick up said object.
- 25. The apparatus of claim 1 in which said indicia means designates a series of rows of regularly spaced positions at which the trolley is to be located and indicates the direction the trolley must be moved to reach any desired position.
- 26. Crane apparatus comprising a trolley; means supporting said trolley for longitudinal and transverse movement to a plurality of locations; means for moving said trolley longitudinally and transversely to said locations, said means being controllable from a fixed control location that is remote with respect to the trolley; means for holding an object to be lifted by said trolley; hoist means on said trolley for raising and lowering said holding means in an essentially vertical path essentially fixed relative to said trolley; indicia means offset from the trolley and from the objects to be lifted for designating a plurality of positions at which the trolley is to be located and to locate a plurality of said objects; television camera means mounted on the trolley and adapted to scan in a direction to view said indicia means; and monitor means at said fixed control location for viewing the scene viewed by said television camera means on the trolley to determine the direction of movement of the trolley and to determine when the trolley is located at a selected position.
- 27. The apparatus of claim 26 in which said holding means includes circumferentially spaced clamping members adapted to grasp peripheral portions of an object to be lifted and includes television camera means directed downwardly to view said clamping members when they are in engagement with an object to be lifted.
- 28. The apparatus of claim 9 in which said grab means comprises a main frame supported by said hoist means, a rotatable subframe mounted on said main frame to rotate about a substantially vertical axis, gripping means comprising clamping means spaced around the periphery of said subframe for grasping the upper peripheral portions of a drum, and means for rotating said subframe relative to the main frame; and in which apparatus said television camera means indicates the operation of said clamping means when a drum is gripped thereby.
- 29. The apparatus of claim 28 in which means are provided to indicate to an operator at said remote location the distance from the gripping means to the drum to be lifted as the grab means is lowered toward the drum.
- 30. Crane apparatus comprising a trolley; means for supporting said trolley for transverse movement to a variety of locations; means for moving said trolley transversely to said locations, said means being controllable from a fixed control location that is remote with respect to said trolley; indicia means offset from the trolley and from the object to be lifted designating a plurality of locations at which the trolley is to be located; television camera means mounted on the trolley and adapted to scan in a direction directed transversely of the direction of movement of the trolley and adapted to view said indicia means when the trolley is at the location designated by said indicia means; monitor means at said fixed control location for reviewing the scene viewed by said television camera means on the trolley to determine when the trolley is properly located; means for holding an object to be lifted by said trolley, said holding means including television camera means directed downwardly to view the object to be held by said holding means and being adapted to grasp an object that has a top that is generally horizontal; hoist means on said trolley for raising and lowering said holding means in an essentially vertical path essentially fixed relative to said trolley; monitor means at said fixed control location by which the scene viewed by said downwardly facing television camera can be viewed; sensing means for indicating the distance from said holding means to the top of the object to be lifted as the holding means is lowered; sensing means for indicating the position of said holding means during contact with the object; and means at said fixed control location for receiving the information from said sensing means.
- 31. Crane apparatus comprising a trolley, hoisting means on said trolley, and holding means adapted to be raised and lowered by said trolley, said hoisting means comprising only three cables connected to said holding means at locations thereon to prevent tilting of said holding means, said hoisting means including means for raising and lowering all said cables at an equal rate while keeping said cables at all times in their same transverse locations relative to said trolley, and means to adjust the tension in two of said cables to indicate when either cable is slack.
- 32. Crane apparatus comprising a trolley, hoisting means on said trolley, and holding means adapted to be raised and lowered by said trolley, said hoisting means comprising only three cables connected to said holding means at locations thereon to prevent tilting of said holding means, said hoisting means including means for raising and lowering all said cables at an equal rate while keeping said cables at all times in their same transverse locations relative to said trolley, said holding means comprising a plurality of clamping members adapted to grasp the upper portion of an object, at least one of said cables being located near one of said clamping members to permit righting of the object when it is in a tilted position.
