Claims
- 1. A device for connecting a first pair of wires to a second pair of wires, comprising:
- a terminal block including a base having means for supporting the first pair of wires, and a cover adapted to fit on said base, said cover having a pair of terminal contacts for making connection to the first pair of wires and a pair of apertures affording access to said terminal contacts; and
- a plug comprising
- an electrically insulative body having first and second ends, said body having therein a pair of protected contacts, each protected contact having a first end portion located at said first end of said body, being adapted to make electrical connection with one of said terminal contacts, and a second end portion located at said second end of said body, being adapted to make electrical connection with one of the second pair of wires,
- an insulative cap hingedly attached to said second end of said body, said cap including means for facilitating connection between each of the second pair of wires and each of said second end portions of said protected contacts, respectively, as said cap is moved from an open position to a closed position, and
- means for providing electrical protection to said protected contacts.
- 2. The device of claim 1 wherein:
- said body further includes a keying element located at said first end thereof; and
- said terminal block includes means for receiving said keying element.
- 3. The device of claim 1 wherein said means for providing electrical protection includes:
- an electrically conductive grounding bar attached to said terminal block;
- means for limiting the voltage passing through said protected contacts; and
- means for connecting said voltage limiting means to said grounding bar.
- 4. The device of claim 3 further comprising a frame supporting said terminal block, said grounding bar being electrically connected to said frame.
- 5. The device of claim 3 wherein said connecting means includes a ground contact attached to said body at said first end thereof, said ground contact being adapted to engage said grounding bar.
- 6. The device of claim 1 wherein:
- said cover further has location means about said apertures for polarizing said apertures; and
- said first end of said body further has means for mating with said location means and for positioning said first end portions of said protected contacts in said apertures to make electrical contact with said terminal contacts.
- 7. The device of claim 6 wherein said location means includes wall means which form a cavity around said apertures.
- 8. The device of claim 1 wherein said first end portion of said protected contacts comprises a tuning fork contact, and said second end portion of said protected contacts comprises a wire insulation displacing contact.
- 9. The device of claim 8 wherein said cap has an aperture therein affording access to said insulation displacing contact portion of said splicing contact and location means mounted thereon to afford proper location of a plug on said cap.
- 10. The device of claim 1 wherein said cover has two rows of terminal contacts for making connection to the first pair of wires disposed in said base, with one contact in each row being positioned to make electrical connection with one of the first pair of wires.
- 11. The device of claim 10 wherein said cover has two rows of apertures positioned therein allowing access to each terminal contact in said two rows.
- 12. The device of claim 11 wherein said location means is formed on said cover above one of said rows of apertures.
