Claims
- 1. A heat or radiation curable flame retardant composition, comprising an admixture of
- (a) at least 20 parts by weight of a non-rubbery crosslinkable olefinic polymer based on 100 parts of the combined polymers in the composition;
- (b) a flame retardant combination of (i) at least 5 parts of a polyphenylene ether resin based on 100 parts of (a) and (b)(i), (ii) an organic phosphate di- or polyfunctional compound or polymer having the formula ##STR7## including mixtures thereof, wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.3, and R.sub.5 are, independently, hydrocarbon; R.sub.2, R.sub.4, R.sub.6 and R.sub.7 are, independently, hydrocarbon or hydrocarbonoxy; X.sup.1, X.sup.2 and X.sup.3 are halogen; m and r are 0 or integers from 1 to 4, and n and p are from 1 to 30, and (iii) a stable brominated material; and
- (c) an effective amount of a crosslinking agent.
- 2. A composition according to claim 1, in which (a) is a C.sub.2 to C.sub.10 olefin homopolymer or copolymer.
- 3. A composition according to claim 1, in which (a) is polyethylene.
- 4. A composition according to claim 1, in which (a) is polybutene.
- 5. A composition according to claim 1, in which (b) (i) is a homopolymer or copolymer having units of the formula ##STR8## wherein Q, Q', Q" and Q'", are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halogen, hydrocarbon radicals, halohydrocarbon radicals, hydroxycarbonoxy radicals, and halohydrocarbonoxy radicals; and n represents the total number of monomer units and is an integer at least about 20.
- 6. A composition according to claim 1, in which (b)(i) is poly (2,6-dimethyl-1, 4-phenylene ether).
- 7. A composition according to claim 1, in which (b)(ii) is the bis diphenyl phosphate of resorcinol.
- 8. A composition according to claim 1, in which (b)(ii) is the bis diphenyl phosphate of hydroquinone.
- 9. A composition according to claim 1, in which (b)(ii) is the bis diphenyl phosphate of bisphenol A.
- 10. A composition according to claim 1, in which (b)(iii) is a compound of the formula ##STR9## where R' is alkylene, straight or branched, having from 1 to 10 carbon atoms; and q and s represent the total number of bromine atoms on each ring and are independently integers from 1 to 5.
- 11. A composition according to claim 10, in which (b)(iii) is 1, 2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy) ethane.
- 12. A composition according to claim 10, in which (b)(iii) is 1, 2 bis-(2,3,4,5,6-pentabromophenoxy) ethane.
- 13. A composition according to claim 1, in which (b),(iii) is a brominated polymer.
- 14. A composition according to claim 13, in which (b)(iii) is tetrabromobisphenol A oligomeric polycarbonate.
- 15. A composition according to claim 1, which also includes an amount of a synergistic agent for (b)(iii) which enhances the flame retardancy.
- 16. A composition according to claim 15, in which the synergistic agent is an antimony compound.
- 17. A composition according to claim 16, in which the antimony compound is antimony oxide.
- 18. A composition according to claim 1, in which (c) is an organic peroxide.
- 19. A composition according to claim 18, in which the organic peroxide is 2,2'-bis(tert-butyl peroxy)-diisopropyl benzene.
- 20. A composition according to claim 1, which includes an additional polymer having elastomeric properties.
- 21. A composition according to claim 20, in which the polymer is a styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene block copolymer.
- 22. An electrically conductive article, comprising a metallic conductor, at least a portion of the surface of which is covered with an electrically insulating layer of a flame retardant composition comprising an admixture of:
- (a) a non-rubbery polyolefin;
- (b) an effective amount of a flame retardant combination of (i) a polyphenylene ether resin, (ii) an organic phosphate, and (iii) a stable brominated material; and
- (c) a crosslinking agent.
- 23. An article according to claim 22, in which (a) is a homopolymer or copolymer of a C.sub.2 to C.sub.10 olefin.
- 24. An article according to claim 22, in which (a) is polyethylene.
- 25. An article according to claim 22, in which (a) is polybutene.
- 26. An article according to claim 22, in which (b)(i) is poly (2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene ether).
- 27. An article according to claim 22, in which (b)(ii) is an aromatic phosphate compound.
- 28. An article according to claim 27, in which (b)(ii) is isopropylated triphenyl phosphate.
- 29. An article according to claim 22, in which (b)(ii) is the bis diphenyl phosphate of a compound selected from among resorcinol, hydroquinone and bisphenol A.
- 30. An article according to calim 22, in which (b)(iii) is 1,2-bis (2,4,6-tribromophenoxy) ethane.
- 31. An article according to claim 22, in which (b)(iii) is 1,2-bis(2,3,4,5,6-pentabromophenoxy) ethane.
- 32. An article according to claim 22, in which (b)(iii) is terabromobisphenol A oligomeric polycarbonate.
- 33. An article according to claim 22, in which the composition also included antimony oxide.
- 34. An article according to claim 22, in which (c) is 2,2'-bis (tert-butyl peroxy)-diisopropyl benzene.
- 35. An article according to claim 22, in which the flame retardant composition has been cured by exposure to high energy electrons.
- 36. An article according to claim 22, in which the flame retardant composition has been cured by exposure to heat.
- 37. In a method for preparing an electrically conductive article, the improvement comprising using as insulation material a curable flame retardant composition comprising an admixture of
- (a) a non-rubbery crosslinkable polyolefin;
- (b) an effective amount of a flame retardant agent comprising, in combination, (i) a polyphenylene ether resin, (ii) an organic phosphate, and (iii) a stable brominated material; and
- (c) an effective amount of a crosslinking agent.
- 38. A method according to claim 37, in which (a) is a polymer of a C.sub.2 to C.sub.10 olefin.
- 39. A method according to claim 37, in which (a) is polyethylene.
- 40. A method according to claim 37, in which (a) is polybutene.
- 41. A method according to claim 37, in which (b)(i) is poly (2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene ether).
- 42. A method according to claim 37, in which (b)(ii) is an aromatic phosphate compound.
- 43. A method according to claim 42, in which (b)(ii) is isopropylated triphenyl phosphate.
- 44. A method according to claim 37, in which (b)(ii) is the bis diphenyl phosphate of a compound selected from among resorcinol, hydroquinone and bisphenol A.
- 45. A method according to claim 37, in which (b)(iii) is 1,2-bis (2,3,4,5,6-pentabromophenoxy) ethane.
- 46. A method according to claim 37, in which (b)(iii) is 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy) ethane.
- 47. A method according to claim 37, in which (c) is 2,2'bis(tert-butyl peroxy)--diisopropyl benzene.
- 48. A method according to claim 37, in which the flame retardant composition is cured by exposure to high energy electrons.
- 49. A method according to claim 37, in which the flame retardant composition is cured by exposure to heat.
- 50. A composition according to claim 1 wherein component (a) is present in an amount greater than component (b)(i).
- 51. A composition according to claim 1 wherein component (a) is present in an amount of at least 34 parts by weight and component (b)(i) is present in amount of at least 25 parts by weight.
