Claims
- 1. An aqueous crosslinked copolymeric gel-forming composition, comprising:
- (a) water;
- (b) a water-dispersible polyvinyl amine copolymer, said polyvinyl amine copolymer being a copolymer of vinylamine and vinylamide having the structure: ##STR2## wherein: R is an alkyl or aryl group having up to 10 carbon atoms; and a and b are mole fractions of each co-monomer unit such that a+b=1, and a.noteq.o and b.noteq.o; and
- (c) a crosslinking agent which is selected from the group consisting of phenolic resins and mixtures of a phenolic component and an aldehyde, said crosslinking agent present in an amount effective to cause gelation of an aqueous solution of said polyvinyl amine copolymer.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 wherein said polyvinyl amine copolymer has a molecular weight of at least about 10,000 and the vinylamine comonomer is present in an amount of at least about 2 mole percent.
- 3. The composition of claim 2, wherein said polyvinyl amine copolymer has a molecular weight of at least about 100,000 and the vinylamine comonomer is present in an amount of about 10 to 30 mole percent.
- 4. The composition of claim 2, wherein said vinylamide comonomer is selected from the group consisting of N-vinylalkyls and N-arylamides.
- 5. The composition of claim 4, wherein said phenolic mixture comprises about 1 to 99 weight percent of at least one phenolic compound selected from the group consisting of phenol, resorcinol, catechol, phloroglucinol, pyrogallol, 4,4'-diphenol and 1,3-dihydroxynaphthaline; and about 1 to about 99 weight percent of at least one aldehyde component selected from the group consisting of aliphatic monoaldehydes, aromatic monoaldehydes, aliphatic dialdehydes and aromatic dialdehydes.
- 6. The composition of claim 5, wherein said phenolic compound is phenol and said aldehyde component is formaldehyde.
- 7. The composition of claim 6, wherein said phenol and said formaldehyde are present in a molar ratio of about 1 to 4.
- 8. The composition of claim 7, wherein said polyamine copolymer is present in an amount of between about 1 and 10 weight percent.
- 9. The composition of claim 1, further comprising a base catalyst to allow said gel-forming composition to gel at temperatures below 300.degree. F.
