Claims
- 1. A method for classifying faults on an electrical power line, comprising:
measuring a first phase prefault voltage, measuring a first phase prefault current, measuring a first phase fault voltage, measuring a first phase fault current; measuring a second phase prefault voltage, measuring a second phase fault voltage, subtracting the first phase prefault voltage from the first phase fault voltage to determine a first voltage drop; subtracting the second phase prefault voltage from the second phase fault voltage to determine a second voltage drop; combining the first phase prefault current and the first phase fault current to determine a fault current value; and classifying the fault as a function of the fault current value and the first and second voltage drop.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein combining the first phase prefault current with the first phase fault current includes dividing the fault current by the prefault current for each phase.
- 3. The method of claim 1, further comprising identifying the fault as a crossover fault when the fault current value and the first and second voltage drop each have a significant values.
- 4. The method of claim 1, further comprising identifying the fault as a single-phase-to-ground fault when the fault current value and the first voltage drop each have a significant value.
- 5. The method of claim 1, further comprising identifying the fault as a single-phase-to-ground fault when the fault current value and the second voltage drop each have a significant value.
- 6. The method of claim 1, further comprising identifying that the fault is a crossover fault.
- 7. The method of claim 1, further comprising identifying that the fault is a single-phase-to-ground fault.
- 8. The method of claim 1, further comprising identifying that the fault is not a phase-to-phase fault.
- 9. The method of claim 1, wherein the electrical power line is in parallel with another electrical power line.
- 10. The method of claim 1, further comprising correcting the fault as a function of the fault current value and the first and second voltage drop.
- 11. The method of claim 1, further comprising identifying a location of the fault as a function of the fault current value and the first and second voltage drop.
- 12. The method of claim 1, wherein the method is conducted by computer-executable instructions located on a computer-readable medium in communication with the electrical power line.
- 13. A system for classifying faults on an electrical power line, comprising:
a first electrical power transmission line; a second electrical power transmission line; and a fault classification device in communication with the first electrical power transmission line, wherein the fault classification device:
measures a first phase prefault voltage, measures a first phase prefault current, measures a first phase fault voltage, measures a first phase fault current, measures a second phase prefault voltage, measures a second phase fault voltage, subtracts the first phase prefault voltage from the first phase fault voltage to determine a first voltage drop, subtracts the second phase prefault voltage from the second phase fault voltage to determine a second voltage drop, combines the first phase prefault current and the first phase fault current to determine a fault current value, and classifies the fault as a function of the fault current value and the first and second voltage drop.
- 14. The system of claim 13, wherein the first and the second electrical power transmission lines are three-phase systems.
- 15. The system of claim 13, wherein a phase-to-ground fault occurs between phase conductors of the first electrical power transmission line.
- 16. The system of claim 13, further comprising a first power generation source and a second power generation source.
- 17. The system of claim 16, wherein the first electrical power transmission line is in communication with the first power generation source and the second power generation source.
- 18. The system of claim 16, wherein the second electrical power transmission line is in communication with the first power generation source and the second power generation source.
- 19. The system of claim 13, wherein the first electrical power transmission line is in parallel with the second electrical power transmission line.
- 20. The system of claim 13, further comprising a first load in communication with the first electrical transmission line.
- 21. The system of claim 20, wherein the fault classification device is located between the first load and the first electrical transmission line.
- 22. A device for classifying faults on an electrical power line, comprising:
a first input for receiving electrical power from a first part of an electrical transmission line; a second input for receiving electrical power from a second part of an electrical transmission line; and a processor component for classifying faults on an electrical power line, the processor performing a method comprising:
measuring a first phase prefault voltage, measuring a first phase prefault current, measuring a first phase fault voltage, measuring a first phase fault current; measuring a second phase prefault voltage, measuring a second phase fault voltage, subtracting the first phase prefault voltage from the first phase fault voltage to determine a first voltage drop; subtracting the second phase prefault voltage from the second phase fault voltage to determine a second voltage drop; combining the first phase prefault current and the first phase fault current to determine a fault current value; and classifying the fault as a function of the fault current value and the first and second voltage drop.
- 23. The device of claim 22, wherein the processor component is a computer-readable medium having computer-executable instructions for performing the method.
- 24. The device of claim 22, wherein the voltages are stored on a computer-readable medium within the processor component.
- 25. The device of claim 22, wherein the currents are stored on a computer-readable medium within the processor component.
- 26. A computer-readable medium having computer-executable instructions for classifying faults on an electrical power line, wherein said computer-executable instructions comprise:
measuring a first phase prefault voltage, measuring a first phase prefault current, measuring a first phase fault voltage, measuring a first phase fault current; measuring a second phase prefault voltage, measuring a second phase fault voltage, subtracting the first phase prefault voltage from the first phase fault voltage to determine a first voltage drop; subtracting the second phase prefault voltage from the second phase fault voltage to determine a second voltage drop; combining the first phase prefault current and the first phase fault current to determine a fault current value; and classifying the fault as a function of the fault current value and the first and second voltage drop.
- 27. The computer-readable medium of claim 26, having computer-executable instructions for combining the first phase prefault current with the first phase fault current includes dividing the fault current by the prefault current for each phase.
- 28. The computer-readable medium of claim 26, having computer-executable instructions for identifying the fault as a crossover fault when the fault current value and the first and second voltage drop each have a significant values.
- 29. The computer-readable medium of claim 26, having computer-executable instructions for identifying the fault as a single-phase-to-ground fault when the fault current value and the first voltage drop each have a significant value.
- 30. The computer-readable medium of claim 26, having computer-executable instructions for identifying the fault as a single-phase-to-ground fault when the fault current value and the second voltage drop each have a significant value.
- 31. The computer-readable medium of claim 26, having computer-executable instructions for identifying that the fault is a crossover fault.
- 32. The computer-readable medium of claim 26, having computer-executable instructions for identifying that the fault is a single-phase-to-ground fault.
- 33. The computer-readable medium of claim 26, having computer-executable instructions for identifying that the fault is not a phase-to-phase fault.
- 34. The computer-readable medium of claim 26, wherein the electrical power line is in parallel with another electrical power line.
- 35. The computer-readable medium of claim 26, having computer-executable instructions for correcting the fault as a function of the fault current value and the first and second voltage drop.
- 36. The computer-readable medium of claim 26, having computer-executable instructions for identifying a location of the fault as a function of the fault current value and the first and second voltage drop.
