Claims
- 1. An apparatus for forming a substantially uniform layer of cryogenic material on an inner surface of a spherical member comprising: means for supporting a spherical member containing cryogenic material within means defining a chamber, jet nozzle means adapted to be positioned about a spherical member mounted within said chamber, means for directing gas through said jet nozzle means onto the spherical member to freeze said cryogenic material, and means for controlling the temperature of the gas flowing through said jet nozzle means, which includes means for raising the temperature of said gas to a point above the solidification temperature of the cryogenic material thereby allowing the cryogenic material to vaporize, and includes means for lowering the temperature of said gas to a point below the solidification temperature of the cryogenic material causes same to form into a substantially uniform layer within the spherical member.
- 2. The apparatus defined in claim 1, wherein said means defining a chamber consists of a freezing cell, and wherein said means for controlling the temperature of said gas includes a liquid helium cooled heat exchanger.
- 3. The apparatus defined in claim 1, wherein said means for controlling the temperature of said gas additionally includes heating means.
- 4. The apparatus defined in claim 1, wherein said jet nozzle means comprises a plurality of jet nozzles constructed to direct gas entirely over an outer surface of the spherical member, wherein said means for directing gas through said jet nozzle means includes a source of gas under pressure, and wherein said means for controlling the temperature of the gas includes a heat exchange means and a heating means.
- 5. The apparatus defined in claim 4, wherein said heating means is positioned to control the temperature of said heat exchanger means.
- 6. The apparatus defined in claim 4, wherein said heat exchange means comprises a liquid helium cooled heat exchanger, said gas from said source passing through a central portion of said heat exchanger into said jet nozzle means.
- 7. The apparatus defined in claim 6, wherein said heating means is positioned intermediate said heat exchanger and said plurality of jet nozzles.
- 8. The apparatus defined in claim 6, wherein said heating means is positioned to control the temperature of the liquid helium flowing into said heat exchanger.
- 9. The apparatus defined in claim 1, additionally including means for evacuating at least said chamber.
- 10. The apparatus defined in claim 1, wherein said means for supporting the spherical member, said means defining a chamber, said jet nozzle means, said means for directing gas, and said temperature controlling means are positioned within an evacuated housing, and additionally including means for evacuating said chamber.
- 11. The apparatus defined in claim 1, wherein said spherical member is levitated within said chamber by said jet nozzle means.
