Claims
- 1. An endovascular cryogenic system for effecting a predetermined cooling treatment of a diseased region of a patient body, the predetermined cooling treatment comprising cooling the diseased region for a time in a predetermined range, the system comprising:
an endovascular catheter having an elongate flexible body with a proximal end and a distal end with a balloon near the distal end; a single-use cartridge comprising a cooling fluid container and cryogenic cooling fluid disposed within the container, the cooling fluid having a quantity sufficient for effecting the predetermined cooling treatment only once; and a cooling fluid path from the container to the balloon, the path having a seal, cooling fluid flow advancing along the path and into the balloon so as to inflate the balloon and effect the predetermined cooling treatment a single time after the seal is opened.
- 2. The system of claim 1, wherein the cooling fluid comprising N2O at a pressure in a range from about 400 to about 1000 psi, the quantity of the cooling fluid being in a range from about 5 to about 30 grams.
- 3. The system of claim 1, wherein the cooling fluid flow is sufficient to exhaust the quantity of cooling fluid in the container within the predetermined time range so that self-termination of the cooling flow can inhibit excessive cooling treatment time.
- 4. The system of claim 3, wherein the single-use cartridge is detachably coupled to the cooling fluid path, and further comprising at least one other single-use cartridge coupleable to the cooling fluid path.
- 5. The system of claim 4, wherein the single-use cartridges comprise a plurality of alternatively selectable cartridges have a plurality of differing quantities of cooling fluid such that selection from among the alternative cartridges effects selection from among a plurality of alternative treatment times.
- 6. The system of claim 1, wherein the seal interrupts the cooling fluid flow from the single-use cartridge when the pressure in the container falls below a threshold value.
- 7. The system of claim 1, further comprising a flow limiter disposed along the flow path, the flow limiter interrupting the cooling fluid flow from the single-use cartridge according to a predetermined cycle so as to effect the predetermined cooling treatment.
- 8. The cryogenic delivery system of claim 1, the predetermined cooling treatment comprising a predetermined treatment temperature range, wherein the quantity of the cryogenic fluid is sufficient to maintain the blood vessel within the temperature range for a time in the predetermined time range.
- 9. The cryogenic delivery system of claim 1, further comprising a casing receiving the container and threadably engaging a fitting so that rotation of the fitting breaches the seal, the seal being affixed to the container.
- 10. An endovascular cryogenic system for effecting a predetermined cooling treatment of a diseased region of a patient body, the system comprising:
an endovascular catheter having an elongate flexible body with a proximal end and a distal end with a balloon near the distal end; a single-use cartridge comprising a cooling fluid container and cryogenic cooling fluid disposed within the container, the cooling fluid comprising N2O at a pressure in a range from about 400 to about 1000 psi and having a quantity in a range from about 5 to about 30 grams; and cooling fluid path from the container to the balloon, the path having a seal, cooling fluid flow advancing along the path and into the balloon so as to inflate the balloon and effect the predetermined cooling treatment a single time after the seal is opened.
- 11. A single-use cryogenic fluid delivery system for use with a cryogenic endovascular catheter to inhibit hyperplasia of a diseased blood vessel region of a patient body, the cryogenic delivery system comprising:
a cooling fluid container; a connector for coupling to the catheter; a cooling fluid path providing fluid communication from the container to the connector, the path having a seal; and cryogenic cooling fluid disposed within the fluid container, the cooling fluid comprising N2O and having a pre-selected quantity in the container in a range from about 5 to about 30 grams so as to provide self-termination of cooling at a time within a predetermined treatment time range, and being at a pressure in the container in a range from about 400 to about 1000 psi, the predetermined quantity and pressure being such that the catheter will cool the blood vessel to a temperature in a predetermined temperature range so as to inhibit hyperplasia when the connector is coupled to the catheter and the seal is opened.
