Claims
- 1. An apparatus for making containers from thermoplastic coated paper side wall and bottom wall blanks comprising:
- a frame,
- a turret having a number of mandrels extending radially outwardly from said turret, a curling die assembly mounted on the inner end of each of said mandrel, a work station mounted on said frame radially outwardly from each mandrel, and means for progressively moving the edge of the container into the curling die assembly,
- each curling die assembly including means for forming a tucked curl lip on the top edge of the container while the container is disposed about the mandrel.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said curling die assembly includes a curl starter ring disposed about the base of the mandrel for initially curling the edge outwardly from the container and a die ring assembly for completely curling the edge of the container.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein said die ring assembly includes a clam shell assembly having a first half ring and a second half ring, each half ring being pivotably connected to said curl starter ring, means for biasing said first and second rings into alignment with the starter ring and means mounted on said frame for pivoting said half rings clear of said starter ring to allow the container to be withdrawn from the mandrel.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein a die ring is mounted on the end of each of said mandrels for curling the top edge of said blanks so that the edge is hidden by the curl, the die ring including a starter ring mounted on the inner end of said mandrel and a first half ring and a second half ring, pivotably mounted to said starter ring and means mounted on said frame for pivoting said half rings from a closed position for forming the curl to an open position for releasing the blank from the mandrel.
- 5. A curling die assembly for forming a tucked curled lip on the top edge of the side wall blank of a paper cup, said assembly including a mandrel for supporting the paper cup, a plate having a semi-circular die ring formed thereon in alignment with said mandrel,
- a U shaped die plate pivotally mounted on each side of the plate, each U shaped die plate including a semi-circular opening,
- means for biasing said U shaped die plates to a closed position with respect to said die ring, means for moving the mandrel toward the die plates to form a curled lip, and
- means for pivoting the U shaped plates to an open position to release the curled lip from the die ring.
- 6. The assembly according to claim 5 wherein said die ring has a beveled edge having a diameter slightly smaller than said mandrel, and tapering outwardly to the diameter of said mandrel.
- 7. The assembly according to claim 6 wherein the diameter of the opening formed by said semi-circular openings is slightly larger than the diameter of said mandrel.
