Claims
- 1. A composition which comprises a major amount of aggregate and an effective bonding amount up to about 40% by weight of the aggregate of the composition of a composition containing an epoxidized fulvene of the formula: ##STR17## wherein each R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 individually is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon containing 1 to 10 carbon atoms, or a hydrocarbon containing one or more oxygen bridges in the chain; or a furyl group; or are interconnected to form a cyclic group, each R.sub.3 and R.sub.6 individually is hydrogen or methyl; each R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 individually is hydrogen or methyl or ##STR18## provided that a maximum of only one such R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5, and R.sub.6 is methyl; and provided that a maximum of any one such R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 is ##STR19## or prepolymer thereof or mixtures thereof, wherein said prepolymer contains at least about 8% oxirane and a catalytic amount of an acid catalyst having a pKa of about 4 or less.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 which is a foundry molding composition containing up to about 10% by weight of the aggregate of said composition.
- 3. The composition of claim 2 wherein the amount of said composition is about 0.5 to about 75% by weight based upon the weight of aggregate.
- 4. The composition of claim 2 wherein said aggregate is sand.
- 5. The composition of claim 1 wherein the fulvene from which said epoxidized fulvene is derived is selected from the group consisting of dimethyl fulvene, methylisobutyl fulvene, methylisopentyl fulvene, methylphenyl fulvene, cyclohexyl fulvene, diisobutyl fulvene, isophorone fulvene, methylethyl fulvene, methyl pentylfulvene, and mixtures thereof.
- 6. The composition of claim 1 wherein said acid catalyst is present in an amount of about 0.8 to about 3% by weight of metal based upon the weight of said epoxidized fulvene in the composition.
- 7. The composition of claim 1 wherein said epoxidized fulvene is epoxidized dimethyl fulvene.
- 8. The composition of claim 1 wherein said epoxidized fulvene is epoxidized ethylmethyl fulvene.
- 9. The composition of claim 1 wherein said acid catalyst is a Lewis acid.
- 10. The composition of claim 1 wherein said acid catalyst is BF.sub.3.
- 11. The composition of claim 1 wherein said prepolymer is a dimer.
- 12. The composition of claim 1 wherein said acid is selected from the group of organic acid, organic substituted sulfonic acid, and Lewis acid.
- 13. The composition of claim 12 wherein said acid is selected from the group of fumaric acid, oxalic acid, benzenesulfonic acid, toluenesulfonic acid, and BF.sub.3.
- 14. The composition of claim 1 wherein said acid is formed in situ.
- 15. The composition of claim 14 wherein said acid is formed with SO.sub.2 and peroxide.
- 16. The composition of claim 1 which is a molding composition.
