Claims
- 1. A curable masking material in a metal-based substrate comprising:a resin that does not serve as a adhesion site for any coating which is subsequently applied and at least one rheology-modifying additive; a substrate with a passage hole, and a coating on the substrate; said resin being in the form of a protrusion, which fills the passage hole and extends above the surface of the substrate by at least about 50% greater than the thickness of the coating.
- 2. The curable masking material of claim 1, comprising a thermosetting resin and at least one reheology-modifying additive, wherein the weight-ratio of thermosetting resin to the total amount of additive is in the range of about 90:10 to about 50:50.
- 3. The curable masking material of claim 2, wherein the thermosetting resin is an epoxy resin or a phenolic resin.
- 4. The curable masking material of claim 1, comprising a thermoplastic resin.
- 5. The material in a metal-based substrate of claim 1, wherein the substrate has an array of passage holes.
- 6. The material in a metal-based substrate of claim 1, wherein the substrate is a turbine engine component having an array of cooling holes.
- 7. The material in a metal-based substrate of claim 1, wherein the resin is characterized by substantially non-newtonian flow characteristics to permit flow to fill the hole and to form an extending slump-resistant protrusion.
- 8. The material in a metal-based substrate of claim 1, comprising an extrudable resin for placement by flow through the passage hole.
- 9. The material in a metal-based substrate of claim 1, comprising a resin characterized by a ratio of shear stress to shear rate as a decreasing function of shear rate.
- 10. The material in a metal-based substrate of claim 1, comprising a resin having a viscosity of about 10 centipoises to about 2000 centipoises.
- 11. The material in a metal-based substrate of claim 1, wherein the passage hole is cylindrically shaped through the body of the substrate.
- 12. The material in a metal-based substrate of claim 1, wherein the passage hole extends through the substrate at an angle in the range of about 20° to about 80° relative to an outer surface of the substrate.
- 13. The material in a metal-based substrate of claim 1, comprising a passage hole of a length in the range of about 50 mils to 700 mils.
- 14. The material in a metal-based substrate of claim 1, comprising about 50 to about 120 passage holes per square inch of substrate surface.
