Claims
- 1. A cushioning conversion machine for converting stock material into a cushioning product, said machine comprising:
- a forming assembly which forms the stock material into a three-dimensional strip of dunnage;
- a stock supply assembly, positioned upstream of the forming assembly, which supplies the stock material to the forming assembly;
- a feed assembly, positioned downstream of the stock supply assembly, which feeds the stock material through the forming assembly; and
- a cutting assembly, positioned downstream of the forming assembly, which cuts the strip of dunnage into sections of a desired length;
- wherein the forming assembly includes a shaping chute having an inlet end and an outlet end through which the stock material passes, and sidewalls extending from the inlet end to the outlet end and converging in a downstream direction;
- wherein the inlet end of the chute is outwardly flared in a trumpeted fashion defined by an outwardly flared radius of curvature relative to the already converging sidewalls of the chute to facilitate passage of the stock material into the shaping chute.
- 2. A cushioning conversion machine as set forth in claim 1 wherein the forming assembly further comprises a forming member positioned at least partially within the chute.
- 3. A cushioning conversion machine as set forth in claim 2 wherein the forming member projects upstream from the inlet end of the chute.
- 4. A cushioning conversion machine as set forth in claim 3 wherein a downstream end of the forming member is positioned adjacent the outlet end of the chute.
- 5. A cushioning conversion machine as set forth in claim 2 wherein the forming member is positioned to guide a central portion of the stock material along a bottom wall of the chute for controlled inward rolling of side edge portions of the stock material.
- 6. A cushioning conversion machine as set forth in claim 2 wherein the chute and the forming member coact to roll side edge portions of the stock material inwardly into generally spiral form.
- 7. A cushioning conversion machine as set forth in claim 1 wherein the feed assembly is positioned downstream of the forming assembly and pulls the stock material through the forming assembly.
- 8. A cushioning conversion machine as set forth in claim 7 wherein the feed assembly also connects the strip of dunnage.
- 9. A cushioning conversion machine as set forth in claim 8 wherein the feed assembly comprises a pair of interacting gears.
- 10. A cushioning conversion machine as set forth in claim 1 wherein the feed assembly includes a motor, an energy storage device for storing power, and a circuit for selectively supplying power from the energy storage device to the motor for energizing the motor.
- 11. A cushioning conversion machine as set forth in claim 10 wherein the motor is an electrical motor and the energy storage device is a battery.
- 12. A method of making a cushioning product, said method comprising the steps of:
- providing a stock material;
- supplying the stock material to a forming assembly including a shaping chute having an inlet end and an outlet end through which the stock material passes and sidewalls extending from the inlet end to the outlet end which converge in a downstream direction, the inlet end of the chute being outwardly flared in a trumpeted fashion defined by an outwardly flared radius of curvature relative to the already converging sidewalls of the chute;
- feeding the stock material through the forming assembly to form a cushioning product, said feeding step including feeding the stock material through the shaping chute whereby the flared inlet end of the chute facilitates the passage of the stock material into the shaping chute.
- 13. A method as set forth in claim 12 wherein the providing step includes providing stock material that is biodegradable, recyclable, and reusable.
- 14. A method as set forth in claim 12 wherein the providing step includes providing stock material that is Kraft paper.
- 15. A method as set forth in claim 12 wherein the providing step includes providing stock material that comprises multiple plies of Kraft paper.
- 16. A method as set forth in claim 12 wherein the providing step includes providing stock material that comprises a roll of three superimposed plies of Kraft paper.
- 17. A method as set forth in claim 16 wherein the providing step includes providing stock material that is approximately 27 inches wide.
