Claims
- 1. A cutter bit assembly comprising a hollow holder defining an open pocket, a unitary cutter-bit having a shank mounted within the pocket and a cutter edge disposed external to the holder, a gap formed between the shank and an inner face of the pocket over a region of the shank closet in vicinity to the cutting edge of the cutter bit, a rod fixed in the pocket in a position opposite to the gap, a non-resilient locking element tapered to conform to and removably wedged in the gap between the shank and said inner face, aperture means in the holder in the vicinity of the gap for permitting insertion and removal of the locking element, and a curved recess in the shank of the cutter bit opposite the gap which seats on the rod.
- 2. A cutter bit assembly according to claim 1, wherein the rod is located in a recess in an inner rear wall surface of the pocket.
- 3. An assembly according to claim 1, wherein the shank has a projection which engages beneath the rod.
- 4. An assembly according to claim 1, wherein the rod is engaged in apertures in side walls of the holder defining the pocket.
- 5. An assembly according to claim 1, wherein the curved recess engages the rod over an arc of 160.degree. to 180.degree..
- 6. In a cutter bit assembly comprising a holder and a unitary cutter bit, the holder being formed with a pocket into which the cutter bit is mounted, wherein the cutter bit is retained within the pocket against a surface of the holder by means of a detachable locking element received in a gap formed between support faces on the cutter bit and the holder and by means of end portions of the cutter bit and holder remote from said faces which have respective curved support surfaces which engage when the cutter bit is fully inserted into the pocket; the improvements comprising both the locking element and the gap are tapered in profile, the locking element is non-resilient, is shaped to conform to and is received in the gap in wedged engagement between said support faces and is insertable into and removable from the gap via an aperture in the holder, and the curved support surfaces are constituted by a cylindrical rod fixed in the pocket and defining a convex surface and a recess in the cutter bit defining a concave surface.
- 7. An assembly according to claim 6, wherein the two ends of the cylindrical rod are held with complementary-shaped apertures formed in the holder.
- 8. An assembly according to claim 7, wherein the two ends of the cylindrical rod are press-fitted into the apertures.
- 9. An assembly according to claim 6, wherein the cylindrical rod is further supported by a cylindrical support surface formed in said end portion of the holder.
- 10. An assembly according to claim 6, wherein the holder is a casting and the cylindrical rod is made from stainless steel.
- 11. A cutter bit assembly comprising a hollow holder defining an open pocket with mutually spaced oppositely disposed first and second interior surfaces, a rod fixed in the pocket at a position adjacent to and protruding inwardly from said first interior surface, a unitary cutter-bit having a shank with a recess therein, said shank being configured and dimensioned to be received in said pocket with said rod received in said recess and with a tapered gap formed between the shank and said second interior surface over a region of the shank closest in vicinity to the cutting edge of the cutter bit, said shank being urged away from said second interior surface and against said rod by a non-resilient detachable locking element tapered to conform to the shape of and fitted in said gap and wedged between said second interior surface and said shank, and an aperture in the holder through which said locking element may be inserted into and removed from said gap.
