Claims
- 1. A drill bit comprising:a bit body; at least one roller cone rotatably mounted on a cantilevered bearing shaft depending from said bit body, said roller cone having a cone axis; a first cutter element extending from a primary row in said roller cone, said first cutter element having a base portion adapted to fit into a corresponding socket on said roller cone and a crest portion defining a first crest line, said first crest line defining a first angle with respect to a projection of said cone axis; and a second cutter element extending from a primary row in said roller cone, said second cutter element having a base portion adapted to fit into a corresponding socket on said roller cone and a crest portion defining a second crest line, said second crest line defining a second angle with respect to a projection of said cone axis; wherein said first and second angles are different.
- 2. The bit according to claim 1 wherein each cutter element defines a distinct angle with respect to a projection of the cone axis.
- 3. The bit according to claim 1 wherein no cutter elements define the same angle with respect to a projection of the cone axis.
- 4. The bit in accordance with claim 1 wherein at least one cutter element has a non-rectilinear crest.
- 5. The bit in accordance with claim 1 wherein at least one cutter element has an arcuate crest.
- 6. The bit in accordance with claim 1 wherein at least one cutter element has a crest that defines a substantially S-shaped spline.
- 7. The bit in accordance with claim 1 wherein said cutter element has a leading face that includes both concave and convex portions when viewed along the longitudinal axis of the cutter element.
- 8. The bit in accordance with claim 1 wherein said cutter element has a concave leading face and a convex trailing face when viewed along the longitudinal axis of the cutter element.
- 9. The bit in accordance with claim 1 wherein said base is non-circular.
- 10. The bit in accordance with claim 1 wherein said base is non-cylindrical.
- 11. The bit in accordance with claim 1 wherein at least two cutter elements have non-rectilinear crests.
- 12. The bit in accordance with claim 1 wherein at least one cutter element has an extending portion having zero draft.
- 13. The bit in accordance claim 1 wherein at least one cutter element has an extending portion having negative draft.
- 14. The drill bit according to claim 1 wherein said cutter element has a longitudinal axis and said longitudinal axis is offset such that it does not intersect the axis of said cone.
- 15. A drill bit comprising:a bit body; at least one roller cone rotatably mounted on a cantilevered bearing shaft depending from said bit body, said roller cone having a cone axis; a first cutter element extending from a primary row in said roller cone, said first cutter element having a base portion adapted to fit into a corresponding socket on said roller cone and a crest portion defining a first crest line, said first crest line defining a first angle with respect to a projection of said cone axis; and a second cutter element extending from a primary row in said roller cone, said second cutter element having a base portion adapted to fit into a corresponding socket on said roller cone and a crest portion defining a second crest line, said second crest line defining a second angle with respect to a projection of said cone axis; wherein said first and second angles are different and at least one cutter element has an extending portion having a non-positive draft; and wherein no cutter elements define the same angle with respect to a projection of the cone axis.
