Claims
- 1. A cutter for an endless cutter device movable along a path for cutting a kerf in a workpiece, said cutter in an upright position comprising
- a body portion disposed in a substantially upright plane and having forward and rearward regions,
- a cutter portion on the rearward region of the body portion having a forwardly facing cutting edge extending transversely of said plane having a selected width as measured normal to the plane of the body portion and disposed at a selected elevation above the body portion, and
- a depth gauge portion on the forward region of the body portion, said depth gauge portion comprising a plate portion bent over at substantially a right angle relative to the plane of the body portion and having an upper surface inclined substantially continuously downwardly from a rearwardly facing rear edge of the plate portion which is disposed at an elevation adjacent but below the elevation of the cutting edge to a forwardly facing front edge of the plate portion which is disposed at a lower elevation, said depth gauge portion having a maximum width region which has a width as measured normal to the plane of the body portion which is at least as great as the width of the cutting edge.
- 2. The cutter of claim 1, wherein the cutter portion and the depth gauge portion have free side regions that extend transversely beyond the plane of the body portion and the free side region of said depth gauge portion extends a distance equal to or greater than the distance of said cutter portion beyond the plane of the body portion.
- 3. The cutter of claim 1, wherein said cutter portion comprises a cutter plate portion bent over at a substantial angle relative to and extending a first distance transversely of and beyond the plane of the body portion, and said depth gauge portion extends transversely of and beyond the plane of the body portion a second distance equal to or greater than said first distance.
- 4. The cutter of claim 1, wherein the maximum width region of the depth gauge portion is disposed intermediate the front and rear edges, and said depth gauge portion has opposed side edges which extend forwardly from said maximum width region and converge toward each other as they extend forwardly therefrom.
- 5. The cutter of claim 4, wherein both of the side edges converge toward the center plane of the body on extending forwardly from the maximum width region.
- 6. The cutter of claim 4, where one of said side edges converges toward the center plane of the body portion at an angle in a range of 35 degrees to 80 degrees.
- 7. The cutter of claim 4, wherein the front edge of the depth gauge extends between said opposed side edges and has a width as measured normal to the plane of the body portion which is narrower than said cutting edge.
- 8. The cutter of claim 7, wherein the width of said front edge is a minor portion of the width of the cutting edge.
- 9. The cutter of claim 1, wherein the maximum width region of the depth gauge portion is disposed intermediate the front and rear edges and said rear edge has a central portion nearest said cutting edge and a side portion which extends forwardly and downwardly from said central portion toward said maximum width region at an angle relative to the plane of the body portion.
- 10. The cutter of claim 9, wherein said rear edge has another side portion which extends forwardly from said central portion and said side portions diverge from each other and from said plane on progressing forwardly.
- 11. The cutter of claim 10, wherein said rear edge side portions diverge from each other to provide an included angle therebetween in a range of from 110 to 170 degrees.
- 12. The cutter of claim 10, wherein said rear edge side portions diverge from each other to provide an included angle therebetween in a range of from 110 to 160 degrees.
- 13. The cutter of claim 10, wherein said central portion of said rear edge of the depth gauge defines a convex curve.
- 14. The cutter of claim 10, wherein said cutting edge extends transversely of the plane of the body portion and said central portion of the rear edge of the depth gauge has a width which is a minor portion of the overall width of the depth gauge portion and is aligned forwardly of an intermediate region of the cutting edge.
- 15. The cutter of claim 10, wherein said central portion of said rear edge of the depth gauge portion is disposed at the greatest elevation for said depth gauge portion relative to said body portion and remainder portions of said depth gauge portion incline downwardly on progressing forwardly therefrom.
- 16. The cutter of claim 15, wherein said diverging side portions are inclined downwardly from said central portion as they extend forwardly.
- 17. The cutter of claim 9, wherein said depth gauge portion has a free side region extending away from said body portion, a side edge which converges toward said plane as it extends forwardly from the maximum width region, and said rear edge side portion and said side edge converge in a convex curve on said free side region at said maximum width region.
- 18. The cutter of claim 9, wherein said maximum width region is disposed at an elevation intermediate the highest and lowest portions of said depth gauge portion.
- 19. The cutter of claim 1, wherein said depth gauge portion has a substantially continuous planar upper surface.
- 20. A cutting chain comprising a plurality of pivotally interconnected links, including cutter links, with a cutter link in said chain in an upright position comprising
- a body portion disposed in a substantially upright plane and having forward and rearward regions,
- a cutter portion on the rearward region of the body portion having a forwardly facing cutting edge extending transversely of said plane having a selected width as measured normal to the plane of the body portion and disposed at a selected elevation above the body portion, and
- a depth gauge portion on the forward region of the body portion, said depth gauge portion comprising a plate portion bent over at substantially a right angle relative to the plane of the body portion and having an upper surface inclined substantially continuously downwardly from a rearwardly facing rear edge of the plate portion which is disposed at an elevation adjacent but below the elevation of the cutting edge to a forwardly facing front edge of the plate portion which is disposed at a lower elevation, said depth gauge portion having a maximum width region which has a width as measured normal to the plane of the body portion which is at least as great as the width of the cutting edge.
- 21. The chain of claim 20, wherein the cutter portion and the depth gauge portion have free side regions that extend transversely beyond the plane of the body portion and the free side region of said depth gauge portion extends a distance equal to or greater than the distance of said cutter portion beyond the plane of the body portion.
- 22. The chain of claim 20, wherein said cutter portion comprises a cutter plate portion bent over at a substantial angle relative to and extending a first distance transversely of and beyond the plane of the body portion, and said depth gauge portion extends transversely of and beyond the plane of the body portion a second distance equal to or greater than said first distance.
- 23. The chain of claim 20, wherein the maximum width region of the depth gauge portion is disposed intermediate the front and rear edges, and said depth gauge portion has opposed side edges which extend forwardly from said maximum width region and converge toward each other as they extend forwardly from said maximum width region.
- 24. The chain of claim 23, wherein both of the side edges converge toward the center plane of the body on extending forwardly from the maximum width region.
- 25. The chain of claim 23, where on of said side edges converges toward the center plane of the body portion at an angle in a range of 35 degrees to 80 degrees.
- 26. The chain of claim 23, wherein the front edge of the depth gauge extends between said opposed side edges and has a width as measured normal to the plane of the body portion which is narrower than said cutting edge.
- 27. The chain of claim 26, wherein the width of said front edge is a minor portion of the width of the cutting edge.
- 28. The chain of claim 20, wherein the maximum width region of the depth gauge portion is disposed intermediate the front and rear edges and said rear edge has a central portion nearest said cutting edge and a side portion which extends forwardly and downwardly from said central portion toward said maximum width region at an angle relative to the plane of the body portion.
- 29. The chain of claim 28, wherein said rear edge has another side portion which extends forwardly from said central portion and said side portions diverge from each other and from said plane on progressing forwardly.
- 30. The chain of claim 29, wherein said rear edge side portions diverge from each other to provide an included angle therebetween in a range of from 110 to 170 degrees.
- 31. The chain of claim 29, wherein said rear edge side portions diverge from each other to provide an included angle therebetween in a range of from 110 to 160 degrees.
- 32. The chain of claim 29, wherein said central portion of said rear edge of the depth gauge defines a convex curve.
- 33. The chain of claim 29, wherein said cutting edge extends transversely of the plane of the body portion and said central portion of the rear edge of the depth gauge has a width which is a minor portion of the overall width of the depth gauge portion and is aligned forwardly of an intermediate region of the cutting edge.
- 34. The chain of claim 29, wherein said central portion of said rear edge of the depth gauge portion is disposed at the greatest elevation for said depth gauge portion relative to said body portion and remainder portions of said depth gauge portion incline downwardly on progressing forwardly therefrom.
- 35. The chain of claim 28, wherein said depth gauge portion has a free side region extending away from said body portion, a side edge which converges toward said plane as it extends forwardly from the maximum with region, and said rear edge side portion and said side edge converge in a convex curve on said free side region at said maximum width region.
- 36. The chain of claim 28, wherein said maximum width region is disposed at an elevation intermediate the highest and lowest portions of said depth gauge portion.
