Claims
- 1. Cutting insert for chip removing machining of workpieces, comprising a body having opposite first and second surfaces interconnected by at least one side surface, wherein with the insert in an operative cutting state, the first and second surfaces form a chip removing top flank surface and an inactive bottom flank surface, respectively; the top flank surface forming a cutting edge with the side surfaces; a cutting geometry surface extending from the cutting edge and including a primary chamfer extending from the cutting edge and transforming into a chip removing surface, the chip removing surface being inclined in a downwards and inwards direction and transforming into a chip deflection surface for initiating deflection of a chip; the chip deflection surface forming an angle with a center reference plane extending parallel to the top and bottom surfaces, the angle being no greater than 18 degrees; a difference in elevation between the chip deflection surface and a highest point of the primary chamfer being no greater than 0.20 mm.
- 2. The cutting insert according to claim 1 wherein the angle is in the range of 3-18 degrees.
- 3. The cutting insert according to claim 2 wherein the angle is in the range of 10-15 degrees.
- 4. The cutting insert according to claim 1 wherein the difference in elevation is in the range of 0.06-0.16 mm.
- 5. The cutting insert according to claim 1 wherein the difference in elevation is in the range of 0.090-0.125 mm.
- 6. The cuffing insert according to claim 1 wherein the chip deflection surface comprises a bottom surface which transforms into a plane land through a concavely curved chip breaking surface; the plane land extending towards a center of the cutting insert and located at an elevation between an elevation of the chip deflection surface and an elevation of a highest point of the primary chamfer.
- 7. The cutting insert according to claim 5 wherein a difference in elevation between the land and the highest point of the primary chamfer is greater than a difference in elevation between the land and the deflection surface.
- 8. The cutting insert according to claim 1 wherein the chip deflection surface comprises a plane land which transforms into a deeper-situated bottom surface.
- 9. The cutting insert according to claim 1 wherein each of the top and bottom flank surfaces forms a cutting edge with the side surfaces, at least one projection having a plane abutment surface projecting above a plane that extends parallel to the reference center plane and intersects the primary bevel.
- 10. The cutting insert according to claim 1 wherein the primary chamfer, the chip removing surface, and the chip deflecting surface extend smoothly continuously in the absence of abrupt projections.
- 11. The cutting insert according to claim 1 wherein the cutting edge includes a surface-smoothing segment for smoothing a cut surface of the workpiece; the surface-smoothing segment including at least first, second, and third part edge segments defined by first, second and third radii, respectively; the first part edge segment disposed between the second and third part edge segments; each of the second and third radii being longer than the first radii.
- 12. The cutting insert according to claim 10 wherein there are a plurality of side surfaces providing the insert with a polygonal shape; adjacent ones of the side surface being interconnected by a convexly curved corner along which a curved portion of the cutting edge extends; the curved portion of the cutting edge including a convexly curved first edge segment defining a nose intersected by an imaginary bisector of the corner, a second edge segment located on a first side of the bisector, a third edge segment disposed on a second side of the bisector, and a fourth edge segment disposed between the first and third edge segments and constituting the surface-smoothing segment.
- 13. The cutting insert according to claim 12 wherein each of the second and third radii is at least three times greater than the first radius.
- 14. The cutting insert according to claim 13 wherein each of the second and third radii is from 5 to 10 times greater than the first radius.
- 15. The cutting insert according to claim 13 wherein the surface-smoothing segment has opposite ends; the second and third part edge segments being of equal length wherein the first part edge segment is located halfway between those opposite ends.
- 16. The cutting insert according to claim 15 wherein the first part edge segment has a length in the range of 1 to 15% of a length of the surface-smoothing.
- 17. The cutting inset according to claim 16 wherein the range is from 5 to 10%.
